Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda): differential in vivo cytokine responses in high and low compatible hosts.

In order to investigate the factors determining the expulsion of intestinal trematodes, we have analyzed the in vivo cytokine responses at several levels and the local responses against Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda) in two host species displaying different compatibility with the parasite. The response of the high compatible host (mice) is characterized by a mixed Th1/Th2 phenotype in the spleen, Peyer's patches and mesenteric lymph nodes. The Mediterranean diet is a central element of a healthy lifestyle, where polyphenols play a key role due to their anti-oxidant properties, and for some of them, as nutripharmacological compounds capable of preventing a number of diseases, including cancer. The biological implications of cholesterol oxidation products have been investigated, though research on plant sterol oxidation products is scarce and in some cases contradictory. The cytotoxicity of 7keto(k)-stigmasterol versus 7keto(k)-cholesterol at different concentrations (0-120 μM) and incubation times (4-24h), in intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2 cells) was evaluated. Increase in gut microbiota after immune suppression in baculovirus-infected larvae.

Spodoptera exigua microarray was used to determine genes differentially expressed in S. exigua cells challenged with the species-specific baculovirus SeMNPV as well as with a generalist baculovirus, AcMNPV. Aims: To demonstrate the occurrence of cellulolytic bacteria in the termite Zootermopsis angusticollis. Methods and Results: Applying aerobic cultivation conditions we isolated 119 cellulolytic strains from the gut of Z. angusticollis, which were assigned to 23 groups of aerobic, facultatively anaerobic or microaerophilic cellulolytic bacteria. 16S rDNA restriction fragment pattern and partial 16S rDNA sequence analysis, as well as numerical taxonomy, were used for the assignment of the isolates. Potent membrane-permeabilizing and cytocidal action of Vibrio cholerae cytolysin on human intestinal cells

Many strains of Vibrio cholerae non-O1 and O1 El Tor that cause diarrhea do not harbor genes for a known secretogenic toxin. However, these strains usually elaborate a pore-forming toxin, hitherto characterized as a hemolysin and here designated V. cholerae cytolysin, whose action on intestinal cells has not yet been described. We report that V. cholerae cytolysin binds as a monomer to Intestine 407 cells and then assembles into detergent-stable oligomers that probably represent tetra- or pentamers.
