Temperature-dependent polymorphism of N-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-dimethyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxamide 3-oxide: experimental and theoretical studies on int…

2014

X-ray analysis of N-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-dimethyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxamide 3-oxide reveals the temperature-dependent polymorphism associated with the crystallographic symmetry conversion. The observed crystal structure transformation corresponds to a symmetry reduction from I41 /a (I) to P43 (II) space groups. The phase transition mainly concerns the subtle but clearly noticeable reorganization of molecules in the crystal space, with the structure of individual molecules left almost unchanged. The Hirshfeld surface analysis shows that various intermolecular contacts play an important role in the crystal packing, revealing graphically the differences in spatial arrangements of the molecule…

"Comment on ""Non-symmetric substituted ureas locked in an (E,Z) conformation: an unusual anion binding via supramolecular assembly"" by M. Olivari, …

2014

We propose another point of view on the type of hydrogen bonded complexes that were described in this journal (M. Olivari et al., New J. Chem., 2013, 37, 663). The main difference is the molecular geometry and breakage of the intramolecular hydrogen bond during association. The current comment is to highlight mentioned aspects and to point out that in some cases the interpretation may not be straightforward due to the simultaneous effects associated with complexation.

Conformational equilibrium in supramolecular chemistry: Dibutyltriuret case

2015

The association of substituted benzoates and naphthyridine dianions was used to study the complexation of dibutyltriuret. The title molecule is the simplest molecule able to form two intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The naphthyridine salt was used to break two intramolecular hydrogen bonds at a time while with the use of substituted benzoates the systematic approach to study association was achieved. Both, titrations and variable temperature measurements shed the light on the importance of conformational equilibrium and its influence on association in solution. Moreover, the associates were observed by mass spectrometry. The DFT-based computations for complexes and single bond rotational barr…

Effect of a Rigid Sulfonamide Bond on Molecular Folding: A Case Study

2015

A disulfonamide compound with bulky aromatic side chains was prepared, and its properties as a potential building block for foldamers were evaluated. Two different solvate crystal forms of the compound were identified and compared to the structures of an analogous oligoamide and related disulfonamides. The disulfonamide is unfolded in one of the solvates, whereas in the other one, a loosely folded conformer stabilized by an intramolecular hydrogen bond is found. Density functional calculations indicated that the loosely folded conformer is slightly more stable than its unfolded isomer. The calculations also identified a third, more tightly folded and more extensively hydrogen bonded, confor…

Connecting Electron-Deficient and Electron-Rich Aromatics to Support Intermolecular Interactions in Crystals

2015

Five compounds bearing electron-deficient pentafluorophenyl as well as electron-rich (salicylate or indole) aromatic moieties connected by amide or ester linkages were investigated by X-ray diffraction. In the crystals, various interactions (π–π, lone pair–π) between the different aromatic units are important structure controlling factors in addition to the stronger inter- or intramolecular hydrogen bonds induced by the amide and ester moieties. The hydrogen bonding leads to polymeric and macrocyclic assembly of the molecular building blocks.

Understanding C C bond formation in polar reactions. An ELF analysis of the Friedel Crafts reaction between indoles and nitroolefins

2013

[EN] The Friedel-Crafts (FC) reaction of N-methyl indole 1 with nitroethylene 2 has been studied using DFT methods at the B3LYP/6-31+G** level in order to characterize the bonding changes along the C-C bond-formation process in polar reactions. For this FC reaction a two-step mechanism has been found. The first step is associated with the C-C bond formation between the most electrophilic centre of nitroethylene and the most nucleophilic centre of N-methyl indole, to yield a zwitterionic intermediate IN. The second step corresponds to an intramolecular proton transfer process at IN, regenerating the aromatic system present at the indole. Despite the high electrophilic character shown by nitr…

Entropy-controlled diastereoselectivity in the photocyclization of rigid derivatives of o-allylaniline.

2002

Two rigid derivatives of o-allylaniline, namely 8-allyl-2-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (1b) and 7-(trans-2-cinnamyl)-2-methylindoline (1c), have been chosen as suitable systems to study the potential stereoselectivity of the photocyclization process. Photolysis of 1b leads to a mixture of diastereomeric lilolidines 4 (trans/cis), while 1cproduces a mixture of 4 (trans/cis) and the tetrahydropyrrolo[3,2,1-hi]indole derivatives 5 (trans/cis). To disclose whether the diastereoselectivity could be entropy dependent, photolysis of 1b and 1c has been performed at several temperatures. In both cases, linear relationships have been observed when ln(k(t)/k(c)) (the relative reaction rate const…

Polycondensed nitrogen heterocycles. Part13. Pyrrolo[3,2-b]indole by intramolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction in the pyrrole series

1984

An intramolecular nucleophilic substitution in the pyrrole series has been generalized. The behaviour of nitro, chlorine, bromine and iodine as leaving groups towards the nucleophilic amino group was observed. An acid catalyzed mechanism has been proposed.

Spectroscopic and theoretical study of push-pull chromophores containing thiophene-based quinonoid structures as electron spacers

2003

Donor−acceptor chromophores containing three different types of thiophene-based electron spacers and the same donor (1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene) and acceptor (dicyanomethylene) end groups have been investigated by infrared and vis-near-IR absorption spectroscopies with the aim of elucidating the ability of the heteroquinonoid spacers as electron transmitters. Density functional theory calculations have been carried out, both within the standard and the time-dependent formalisms, to assign the most relevant electronic and infrared features of these chromophores and to assess useful information about their molecular structures. Both theoretical calculations and vibrational spectra demonstrate the …

Bioconjugates of 1’-Aminoferrocene-1-carboxylic Acid with (S)-3-Amino-2-methylpropanoic Acid and L-Alanine

2010

Formal CH 2 insertion in bioconjugates composed of 1'-aminoferrocene-1-carboxylic acid (Fca) and alanine Boc-Ala-Fca-Ala-OCH 3 gives Fca bioconjugates with the β-amino acid (S)-3-amino-2-methylpropanoic acid (Aib). The novel homologous conjugates of ferrocene were fully characterized by spectroscopic and analytical methods. NMR, CD and IR spectroscopy in concert with DFT calculations suggest that the formal "L-Ala-to-(S)-β-Aib mutations" can exert ferrocene helix inversion due to the different stereogenic carbon atoms of L -Ala and (S)-β-Aib. Furthermore, the mutation (de-)stabilizes the conserved secondary structure with two intramolecular hydrogen bonds, depending on the "mutation site". …
