Physicochemical Surface Properties of Various Intraocular Lenses

2001

<i>Purpose:</i> It is of major interest to understand how intraocular lens (IOL) surfaces interact with aqueous humor or tissues after implantation. Important parameters to describe the physicochemical surface properties are the contact angle and critical surface tension. Therefore, we performed measurements of the contact angle and critical surface tension of several commercially available IOLs. <i>Setting:</i> Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, University Eye Hospital, Tübingen, and Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, Germany. <i>Methods:</i> A total of 17 commercially available standard quality IOL types (6…

Schematic eye models to mimic the behavior of the accommodating human eye

2018

A simplified version of the human eye is known as schematic eye model. Since the first attempts in the middle of the 19th century, numerous approaches describing new schematic eye models have been introduced. Some of them are able to describe the accommodation ability of the human eye. Accommodative schematic eyes could be of great interest since they are able to explain the functionality of the human eye and they can be easily used for different research purposes. Some of these include the design and testing of multifocal ophthalmic solutions, evaluation of the effect of optical aberrations on the retinal image quality, and study of the optical performance of the eye at different distances…

A new trifocal corneal inlay for presbyopia

2021

[EN] Corneal inlays (CIs) are the most recent surgical procedure for the treatment of presbyopia in patients who want complete independence from the use of glasses or contact lenses. Although refractive surgery in presbyopic patients is mostly performed in combination with cataract surgery, when the implantation of an intraocular lens is not necessary, the option of CIs has the advantage of being minimally invasive. Current designs of CIs are, either: small aperture devices, or refractive devices, however, both methods do not have good performance simultaneously at intermediate and near distances in eyes that are unable to accommodate. In the present study, we propose the first design of a …

Validation of a spectral light scattering method to differentiate large from small particles in intraocular lenses

2017

A psychophysical approach has been designed to measure straylight from intraocular lenses (IOLs) in vitro. This approach uses a clinical straylight meter (C-Quant) and an observer's eye as optical detector. Based on this, we introduced a method for study of straylight-wavelength dependency for IOLs. This dependency can be used to distinguish between 2 types of scattering particles (small and large) as defined by Mie theory. Validation was performed using a turbidity standard and scattering filters. Several IOLs were analyzed to identify potential scattering sources. Large particles were found to predominate in scattering from the studied lenses. This was confirmed by straylight-angular depe…

Subjective photic phenomena with refractive multifocal and monofocal intraocular lenses. results of a multicenter questionnaire.

2001

Abstract Purpose To compare the incidence and severity of photic phenomena after the implantation of the Array® (Allergan) refractive multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) and a monofocal IOL. Setting Multicenter study at Kiel, Mainz, Karlsruhe, and Bremerhaven, Germany. Methods The study comprised 231 randomly selected patients from 4 study centers. The patients had had uneventful phacoemulsification with implantation of a refractive MIOL (n = 138) or a monofocal IOL (n = 93). By questionnaire, patients were asked whether they experienced light sensations postoperatively (light streaks, halos, flare, flashes, or glare) that had not been noticed preoperatively. Additional questions evaluated w…

Tear production and intraocular pressure values in clinically normal eyes of whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus)

2018

The objective of this study was to determine the normal range of tear production and values of intraocular pressure (IOP) in clinically normal eyes of whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus). A total of 86 birds: 81 cygnets (6-10 weeks old) and 5 moulting – adult swans (3-6 years old) were examined in this study. Both eyes of all birds underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, including evaluation of tear production with the phenol red thread test (PRTT) and the assessment of the IOP by rebound tonometry, employing the TonoVet® device. The mean ± standard deviation of PRTT values were as follows: all cygnets (81) 22.59±3.48 mm/15s, male cygnets (45) 22.64±3.54 mm/15s, female cygnets (36) 22.53±3.4…

Modulation transfer function in refractive-diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses in vitro

2007

Purpose: The optical quality of two types of multifocal, hybrid refractive-diffractive, intraocular lenses (IOL) is analyzed in vitro. Following the EN-ISO international standard, the IOLs’ modulation transfer functions (MTF) are determined for both distance and near vision. The behaviour of these curves when the pupil size varies is studied. Methods: The IOLs analyzed were: AcrySoft ResTor SN60D3 (Alcon) and Tecnis ZM900 (AMO). The MTF was calculated from the cross line-spread function recorded with the OPAL Vector System (Image Science Ltd. Oxford) by using fast Fourier transform techniques. The artificial eye model used simulates in vivo conditions of the anterior chamber including an ar…

Multifokale Intraokularlinsen

2001

Modern cataract surgery has developed tremendously during the past 10-15 years. Improved surgical techniques, as well as improved implant materials and designs, have enlarged patient profiles and indications for cataract surgery. This also created much higher expectations from the patients' site. The loss of accommodation is loss of quality of life for presbyopic and especially young pseudophakic patients. Therefore cataract surgery with multifocal IOL implantation is not only of academic interest, but reflects demands and expectations of our patients. Multifocal IOLs have been implanted since 1986, starting with 2-3 zone refractive and diffractive designs. Due to surgical techniques of tha…
