Combined procedure for glaucoma and cataract: A retrospective study

1994

Abstract To ascertain the long-term effects of a triple procedure in the case of coexisting cataract and glaucoma, we did a retrospective study of 93 eyes that had cataract extraction, IOL implantation, and trabeculectomy within a ten-year period. Mean follow-up was 32.4 ± 21.9 months. Mean postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) was significantly lower than preoperatively, even though fewer medications were being used. One year after surgery, 60% of eyes had a best corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better with an average improvement of 3.8 Snellen lines. Patients who had had surgery four or more years before the study had the highest percentage of eyes with an IOP exceeding 22 mm Hg. Th…

Prevalence of glaucoma and distribution of intraocular pressure in a population. The Casteldaccia Eye Study.

2009

IOP was measured in 1062 middle-aged and elderly subjects of a small Sicilian town, enrolled in a population based survey. The mean IOP was 15.1 +/- 3.7 mmHg without interocular or sex differences. A small but significant age-dependent increase of IOP was found. Circadian and seasonal influences were recorded: IOP was higher in the morning and in winter. The prevalence of chronic open-angle glaucoma was 1.2%, but it grew to 3.6 if only subjects aged 70 years or more were considered. IOP of 24 mmHg or more was found in 2.7%, while 4.3% of subjects showed IOP of 21 mmHg or more. This survey shows that mean IOP of the Mediterranean population studied is similar to the IOP found in other epidem…

Transpalpebral tonometry: reliability and comparison with Goldmann applanation tonometry and palpation in healthy volunteers

2005

Background/aim: TGDc-01 is a new, portable, transpalpebral tonometry device. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility of this method, including intraobserver and interobserver deviations, and to compare the results with those of Goldmann applanation tonometry and palpation of intraocular pressure (IOP). Methods: A total of 40 eyes of 20 healthy volunteers were included. Two independent parallel observers (1 and 2) performed three replicate measurements per eye, respectively, both using TGDc01 tonometry, one observer (3) performed three replicate measurements using Goldmann applanation tonometry, and one observer (4) measured the IOP via palpation. Intraindividual deviations…

Ocular pulse amplitude in patients with open angle glaucoma, normal tension glaucoma, and ocular hypertension.

2002

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is not a fixed constant value but rather has pulsatile components associated with cardiac action. The SmartLens dynamic observing tonometer (odc, Ophthalmic Development Company AG, Zurich, Switzerland) can measure and record simultaneously IOP and ocular pulse amplitude (OPA). It was the aim of this study to evaluate OPA in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and high IOP, normal tension glaucoma (NTG), and ocular hypertension (OHT). Furthermore, the authors examined whether there were any correlations with blood pressure.80 subjects were divided into four groups (n=20): 20 patients each with POAG, NTG, and OHT and 20 volunteers without any ocular pat…

Healon5 versus Viscoat during cataract surgery: intraocular pressure, laser flare and corneal changes

2000

Background: The use of a viscoelastic substance facilitates cataract surgery. Healon 5 is a new viscoelastic product with special rheological properties. We evaluated the postoperative effect of Viscoat and Healon5 on intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), endothelial cell counts and laser flare. Methods: Forty-eight eyes of 48 patients undergoing routine phacoemulsification followed by foldable IOL implantation were enrolled. Either Healon5 or Viscoat was used according to a block- randomization scheme. The aspiration technique was standardized. IOP, CCT, endothelial cell counts and laser flare were compared pre- and postoperatively. Statistical analysis was performed…

Intraocular pressure after excimer laser myopic refractive surgery

2001

The aim of this study was to determine whether intraocular pressure (IOP), as measured by Goldmann applanation or non-contact tonometry, shows systematic changes in patients who have undergone photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) or laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). IOP was measured by central Goldmann and non-contact tonometry in 54 patients pre and post-PRK, and in 43 patients pre- and post-LASIK. An interval of 12 months was allowed after surgery. Patients were selected to have one of four specific initial values of refractive error (-2.5, -5.0, -7.5 and -10.0 D). Fellow unoperated eyes were used as controls. A paired Student's t-test and a one-way ANOVA test were used for statistical a…

Long-term observation of endocrine ophthalmopathy and retrospective appraisal of therapeutic measures.

1990

The course of endocrine ophthalmopathy was investigated on the basis of clinical and biochemical parameters and in relation to different therapeutic strategies. A retrospective appraisal was made of 297 patients (44 +/- 14 yr, 249 women) with inclusion of anamnestic and clinical data as well as the results of computer tomography. At the beginning of therapy, 253 patients were hyperthyroid, 36 were euthyroid and eight were hypothyroid. The HLA typing carried out in 89 patients showed the phenotypes B8 and DR3 in 32% and 42% of the cases, respectively. Raised microsomal antibodies were present in 56% of the patients and there were raised thyroglobulin antibodies in 19%. Sixty-three % of the p…
