Noninvasive assessment of liver disease severity in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes

2023

Background: We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of simple non-invasive tests(NITs) in NAFLD patients with type 2 diabetes(T2D). Methods: This was an individual patient data meta-analysis of 1780 patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD and T2D. The index tests of interest were FIB-4, NAFLD Fibrosis Score(NFS), APRI, liver stiffness measurement(LSM) by vibration-controlled transient elastography(VCTE) and AGILE 3+. The target conditions were advanced fibrosis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) and fibrotic NASH(NASH plus F2-F4 fibrosis). The diagnostic performance of NITs individually or in sequential combination was assessed by area under receiver operating characteristic curve(AUROC) and by dec…

Robotic transanal total mesorectal excision: Is the future now?

2021

Total mesorectal excision (TME) is the standard surgical treatment for the curative radical resection of rectal cancers. Minimally invasive TME has been gaining ground favored by the continuous technological advancements. New procedures, such as transanal TME (TaTME), have been introduced to overcome some technical limitations, especially in low rectal tumors, obese patients, and/or narrow pelvis. The earliest TaTME reports showed promising results when compared with the conventional laparoscopic TME. However, recent publications raised concerns regarding the high rates of anastomotic leaks or local recurrences observed in national series. Robotic TaTME (R-TaTME) has been proposed as a nove…

Validation of Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte Ratio in a Multi-institutional Cohort of Patients With T1G3 Non–muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer

2018

The aim of this multicenter study was to investigate the prognostic role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and to validate the NLR cutoff of 3 in a large multi-institutional cohort of patients with primary T1 HG/G3 non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC).

Mutant p53 gain of function can be at the root of dedifferentiation of human osteosarcoma MG63 cells into 3AB-OS cancer stem cells

2014

Osteosarcoma is a highly metastatic tumor affecting adolescents, for which there is no second-line chemotherapy. As suggested for most tumors, its capability to overgrow is probably driven by cancer stem cells (CSCs), and finding new targets to kill CSCs may be critical for improving patient survival. TP53 is the most frequently mutated tumor suppressor gene in cancers and mutant p53 protein (mutp53) can acquire gain of function (GOF) strongly contributing to malignancy. Studies thus far have not shown p53-GOF in osteosarcoma. Here, we investigated TP53 gene status/role in 3AB-OS cells-a highly aggressive CSC line previously selected from human osteosarcoma MG63 cells-to evaluate its involv…

Microwave-induced thermoablation with Amica-probe is a safe and reproducible method to treat solid renal masses: results from a phase I study.

2012

Microwave thermal ablation (MWTA) could be considered in the future for treating small solid renal masses. The aim of the present study was to determine both the tolerability of the new Amica-probe applicator-induced MWTA used in vivo on patients with solid renal masses and the effects of heating on renal tumors and normal renal parenchyma. Fourteen patients with renal masses eligible for open radical nephrectomy were enrolled in this phase I study. All patients underwent MWTA of renal masses during the open surgery procedure before clamping of renal vascular pedicle. The effects of MWTA on patients' coagulation and tumor/renal vasculature were investigated. The histological effects of MWTA…

Soluble E-Selectin Enhances Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (ICAM-1) Expression in Human Tumor Cell Lines

1998

E-selectin mediates neovascularization via its soluble form, while its membrane-bound form initiates binding of tumor cells to vascular endothelium. Therefore, it was studied whether soluble E-selectin regulates further adhesion molecules on tumor cells. In tumor cells but not in related nonmalignant cells, intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 expression was strikingly increased from 5 to 68% positive cells by in vitro inoculation of a recombinant E-selectin-IgG1 within 24 h, as analyzed by flow cytometry. The absence of changes in the expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule, integrin ligands (CD11a, CD18, integrin alpha 4), and sialyl-Lewis X indicates a specific effect of solubl…

Comparison between Laparoscopic and Robotic Approach for Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in Endometrial Carcinoma Women

2022

Robotic surgery has been approved as an alternative to laparoscopy to improve surgical outcomes. There is neither a consensus nor a systematic assessment of the literature about the superiority of the robotic approach over the laparoscopic one for sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy in endometrial carcinoma (EC) women. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to compare the laparoscopic and robotic approaches for SLN biopsy in EC patients. Five electronic databases were queried from their inception to May 2022 for peer-reviewed studies, comparing such approaches in SLN biopsy in EC patients. The rate of detected SLN, dissected SLN, intraoperative and postoperative complic…
