Surgical treatment of early breast cancer in day surgery.
2007
Quadrantectomy and associated sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is currently employed in most breast surgery centres as the gold standard in the treatment of early breast cancer. This approach has a modest morbidity and can usually be performed in a day-surgery regimen, leading to best acceptance by the patients. This reports outlines the experience of our Breast Unit with quadrantectomy and SLNB in day surgery for early breast cancer. One hundred patients presenting to our institution with primary invasive breast cancer measuring less than 3 cm and clinically negative axillary nodes underwent quadrantectomy and SLNB in day surgery. For 60 women with breast cancer the sentinel node was nega…
Minimally Invasive Video-Assisted Thyroidectomy: Analysis of Complications From a Systematic Review
2019
Background. Nowadays, minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy (MIVAT) is considered a safe and effective option. However, its complication rate has not been specifically discussed yet. The aim of this systematic review was enrolling a large number of studies to estimate early and late complications (transient and definitive, uni- and bilateral laryngeal nerve palsy; transient and definitive hypocalcemia; cervical hematoma; hypertrophic or keloid scar) of MIVAT compared with conventional technique. Methods. The review was performed according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) criteria in PubMed and Embase. Search terms were “minimally inva…

Diagnòstic; Malalties fúngiques invasores; Pneumocystis Diagnóstico; Enfermedades fúngicas invasivas; Pneumocystis Diagnosis; Invasive fungal diseases; Pneumocystis The Fungal Infections Definitions in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients (FUNDICU) project aims to provide standard sets of definitions for invasive fungal diseases (IFDs) in critically ill, adult patients, including invasive aspergillosis (IA), invasive candidiasis (IC), Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP), and other non-IA, non-IC IFDs. The first step of the project was the conduction of separated systematic reviews of the characteristics and applicability to critically ill, adult patients outside classical populations at ri…
Starzec wąskolistny Senecio inaequidens D.C. w pasie autostrady koło Brzegu na Śląsku Opolskim
2018
The paper presents the vegetation types with invasive Senecio inaequidens along the road verges in the Opole Silesia. The large population of this South-African species was located in the second half of June 2018 in the green belt (central reservation) along the A4 motorway (motorway section Brzeg – Opole).
Nowe stanowiska interesujących halofitów wzdłuż autostrady A-4 na Śląsku Opolskim
2018
The paper presents new sites of interesting synanthropic plants in the Opole Silesia. Three halophilous species,Plantago coronopus L. Spergularia marina (L.) Besser and Cochlearia officinalis L. were found on road verges of motorway A4 within the section Brzeg – Prądy. All species were observed with very large population sizes. They can thrive because of de-icing of the motorway surface with the application of sodium chloride spray.
Alien Insect Impact on Cultural Heritage and Landscape: an Underestimated Problem
2017
The impact of alien invasive insects on cultural heritage and landscapes is very often neglected; even though, more than 50% of species that threaten cultural heritage in Europe are of exotic origin. In addition they are more aggressive. Several examples and a description, are given of the most dangerous alien insects present in heritage sites that constitute a risk for the conservation of cultural property: museum collections, libraries, archives and historic buildings. Globalisation has increased this phenomenon but traces of the accidental introduction of insect pests have occurred since Roman times. The paper discusses the need to implement an estimation of the costs that arise from the…

Development of a non-invasive LED based device for adipose tissue thickness measurements in vivo
2012
There are a number of techniques for body composition assessment in clinics and in field-surveys, but in all cases the applied methods have advantages and disadvantages. High precision imaging methods are available, though expensive and non-portable, however, the methods devised for the mass population, often suffer from the lack of precision. Therefore, the development of a safe, mobile, non-invasive, optical method that would be easy to perform, precise and low-cost, but also would offer an accurate assessment of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) both in lean and in obese persons is required. Thereof, the diffuse optical spectroscopy is advantageous over the aforementioned techniques. A p…
Invasive Alien Species and Their Effects on Marine Animal Forests
2020
Nonindigenous species are increasingly transported around the world through multiple pathways by a diversity of vectors. Invasive species are a subset of those that are introduced into the receptor community, where they establish and increase their population to a size where they impact the native system. Marine invasive species can therefore interact with and modify native animal forests and/or create novel ones resulting in simple-to-complex changes in material cycling, energy flow, ecosystem structure, and function. Despite the ever increasing number of studies dealing with marine invasive species, mostly biological invasions are mentioned generically as one of a number of threats of dir…
