Patient Expectations in the Treatment of Painful Diabetic Polyneuropathy: Results from a Non-Interventional Study
2014
Objective Pain control is the main objective when treating patients with painful diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP). However, DPNP is associated with further substantial patient burden that often is not appropriately addressed. Our study identified patients' needs and asked patients what they expected from DPNP treatment. Methods Baseline data were collected in a German prospective, non-interventional study in patients with DPNP starting or switching pain medication at the discretion of the investigator. DPNP severity was evaluated using Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) and Clinician/Patient Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S/PGI-S). Primary objective of this study was to evaluate for whi…
Association of Depressive Symptoms With Impaired Glucose Regulation, Screen-Detected, and Previously Known Type 2 Diabetes
2010
OBJECTIVE To study the association between impaired glucose regulation (IGR), screen-detected type 2 diabetes, and previously known diabetes and depressive symptoms. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Altogether, 2,712 participants from three hospital districts in Finland attended a health examination. Cutoff scores ≥10 and ≥16 in the 21-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-21) were used for depressive symptoms. The participants were defined as having known diabetes if they reported diabetes. An oral glucose tolerance test was used to detect normal glucose regulation (NGR), impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and screen-detected diabetes. The participants were defined…
Impact of comorbidities on pharmacotherapy of painful diabetic neuropathy in clinical practice.
2014
Abstract Aims We evaluated the impact of baseline comorbidities on the effectiveness of duloxetine and anticonvulsants (pregabalin/gabapentin) in patients with painful diabetic neuropathy in clinical care. Methods Outcomes from a 6-month, observational study with 2575 patients initiating/switching DPNP treatment were analyzed post-hoc. Propensity scoring was used to adjust for baseline factors influencing treatment choice in 1523 patients receiving duloxetine or anticonvulsants. Analysis of covariance models with fixed effects for baseline pain, treatment, propensity score, baseline characteristics or comorbidities, and their interaction with treatment were used to estimate LSmean effects o…
Lower self-reported depression in patients with erectile dysfunction after treatment with sildenafil
2001
Abstract Background: Depressive symptoms in men with erectile dysfunction (ED) may improve under successful ED treatment. Self-reported depressive symptoms were compared in men with ED after sildenafil treatment to a group of untreated patients. Methods: In an open study, self-reported depressive symptoms of 54 men after successful treatment with sildenafil (>4 weeks) and 51 men awaiting ED treatment were investigated with the Center of Epidemiologic Studies–Depression Scale (CES–D). CES–D items were subjected to an exploratory factor analysis and group differences in CES–D items and factors were analyzed. Results: Groups were comparable with respect to demographic characteristics and illne…
The role of fear-avoidance cognitions and behaviors in patients with chronic tinnitus.
2012
The current study investigated the role of fear-avoidance-a concept from chronic pain research-in chronic tinnitus. A self-report measure the "Tinnitus Fear-Avoidance Cognitions and Behaviors Scale (T-FAS)" was developed and validated. Furthermore, the role of fear-avoidance behavior as mediator of the relationship between anxiety sensitivity and tinnitus handicap was investigated. From a clinical setting, N = 373 patients with chronic tinnitus completed questionnaires assessing tinnitus handicap (Tinnitus Handicap Inventory), anxiety, depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), anxiety sensitivity (Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3), personality factors (Big Five Inventory-10), and fear-…
Associations between loneliness, depressive symptoms and perceived togetherness in older people.
2005
This study explores the associations of loneliness with depressive symptoms in a five-year follow-up and describes how the six dimensions of perceived togetherness explain loneliness and depressive symptoms at baseline. The data were collected on 207 residents of Jyväskylä, central Finland, who at baseline in 1990 were aged 80; and 133 residents who at follow-up in 1995 were aged 85. Loneliness was assessed using a questionnaire item with four preset response options, perceived togetherness using the Social Provisions Scale, and depressive symptoms using the CES-D scale. A recursive structural equation model showed that in women but not in men, depressive symptoms predicted more experiences…
Scores for functional disability in patients with rheumatoid arthritis are correlated at higher levels with pain scores than with radiographic scores
2000
Objective To analyze correlations of functional disability scores with other measures of clinical status, in particular, Larsen radiographic scores and pain scores, in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods The functional capacity of 141 patients with RA (102 women, 39 men; median age 57 years; median disease duration 11.8 years; 83% rheumatoid factor positive) was assessed according to the Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ). Other variables studied included Larsen scores for radiographic damage of the small joints of the hands, wrists, and feet, pain scores by visual analog scale (VAS), Disease Activity Scores, general health scores by VAS, and Beck Depression Invento…
The profiles of health care utilization among a non-depressed population and patients with depressive symptoms with and without clinical depression
2019
Objective: To examine health service (HS) utilization profiles among a non-depressive population and patients with depressive symptoms (DS) with and without clinical depression. Design, subjects and setting: The study population was based on primary care patients with DS scoring ≥10 in the 21-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and who were at least 35 years old and had been referred to depression nurse case managers (n = 705). Their psychiatric diagnosis was confirmed with the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.). Of these patients, 447 had clinical depression. The number of patients with DS without clinical depression was 258. The control group consisted of a random s…
Spatial mapping of price competition using logit-type market share models and store-level scanner-data
2009
This paper proposes a methodology to obtain reliable spatial maps of price competition using store-level scanner data. Specifically, a procedure to obtain a symmetric matrix of similarities between brands considering their substitutability depending on price variations is proposed. The matrix is derived from a market response model where price cross-effects are split into two components. The first component accounts for the fact that price variation in one brand can have different effects to price variation in other brands (ie j → j′≠j′ → j). The second component accounts for the fact that the price of each brand can have different effects across competing brands (ie j → j′≠j → j ″). The ma…
Solving a continuous periodic review inventory-location allocation problem in vendor-buyer supply chain under uncertainty
2019
In this work, a mixed-integer binary non-linear two-echelon inventory problem is formulated for a vendor-buyer supply chain network in which lead times are constant and the demands of buyers follow a normal distribution. In this formulation, the problem is a combination of an (r, Q) and periodic review policies based on which an order of size Q is placed by a buyer in each fixed period once his/her on hand inventory reaches the reorder point r in that period. The constraints are the vendors’ warehouse spaces, production restrictions, and total budget. The aim is to find the optimal order quantities of the buyers placed for each vendor in each period alongside the optimal placement of the ve…
