The effect of fish farming organic waste on food availability for bivalve molluscs (Gaeta Gulf, Central Tyrrhenian, MED): stable carbon isotopic anal…
2001
Stable carbon isotope (δ13C) analysis was used in a fish-farming impacted Mediterranean area (the Gulf of Gaeta, Central Tyrrhenian) to determine the predominant carbon sources available to bivalve molluscs cultivated around fish cages. Wether the organic matter generated by fish farming was taken up by the bivalve molluscs was also investigated. Stable carbon isotope values were measured in the particulate organic carbon (POC) of samples from potential organic matter sources such as fish-pelleted feed, mollusc faecal waste and bivalve flesh. The sources of organic matter affecting the study area water column and benthic communities appeared to be terrigenous-continental, autochthonous (phy…
A Fibrillar Biodegradable Scaffold for Blood Vessels Tissue Engineering
2012
In recent years there has been a growing interest for the development of tubular scaffolds employed to assist the replacement of small blood vessels. Materials designed for this purpose need to be biodegradable, have good mechanical properties and improve cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. To obtain biomaterials with these properties, electrospinning seems to be one of the most useful technique. Several biodegradable synthetic polymers or constituents of the extracellular matrix (ECM) have been electrospun showing optimal mechanical properties and biodegradability. However, such polymers are lacking in versatile chemical structure affordable to immobilize growth factors or ch…
Hydrocarbon degrading bacteria vs microbial consortia in the degradation of Policyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
2014
The Harbor of Priolo Gargallo is a chronically polluted area in Sicily (Italy). Bioremediation is an alternative friendly strategy to reduce environmental risks that relies on microorganisms that play a key role in the biodegradation of hydrocarbon contaminants. In this study, sediment samples were collected in 6 stations inside the area indicated. Analysis of total hydrocarbons, microbial abundance (DAPI, CFU and MPN), and total bacterial diversity (DGGE) were carried out. Enrichment cultures and isolation of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were carried out in the mineral medium ONR7a with a mix of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons [PAHs-Mix; Methylnaphtalene, Byphenile, Phenantrene, Dibenzo…
BIODEGRADAZIONE DEGLI IDROCARBURI: DALLE COMUNITÀ MICROBICHE MARINE AI SISTEMI READY TO USE PER IL BIORISANAMENTO
Crude oil is one of the major hazardous pollutants. A promising technology for the treatment of contaminated sites is based on biodegradation of oil pollutants by microbial populations. Several microorganisms are known to use hydrocarbons as carbon sources. In the marine environment, obligate hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (BIC) have been defined as being ecologically important for the aerobic removal of hydrocarbons. Recent advances in microbial ecology make it possible to combine molecular and culture-dependent approaches to identify bacterial community at environmental sites. In this thesis a microbiological survey of the Priolo Bay (eastern coast of Sicily, Ionian Sea), a chronically poll…
New applications in integrated fixed film activated sludge-membrane bioreactor (IFAS-MBR) systems
2020
Abstract This chapter provides an overview on the development and application of integrated fixed film activated sludge-membrane bioreactor (IFAS-MBR) systems. IFAS-MBRs represent a novel configuration for advanced wastewater treatment, and only a few studies are available in literature. With this aim, the results of some studies on IFAS-MBR systems already published are discussed and compared in this chapter. Literature shows that the influent carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) strongly affects the biological process in IFAS-MBR. The organic matter removal efficiency (removed biologically) decreases from 60% to 23.5% with the decrease of influent C/N from 10 to 2 mgCOD mgTN− 1. Nitrogen remova…

Dynamic Lighting Strategies with Load Modulation Purposes to Reduce Peak Electrical Demand
2018
This paper proposes a study about the feasibility to modulate the indoor artificial lighting, taking into account both achievable energy savings and comfort conditions, in order to reduce lighting electric loads. In particular, it focuses on the possibility, on one hand, to decrease the luminous flux and, on the other hand, to change the Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT), in order to decrease the absorbed power. Moreover, the impact of daylight-linked control systems was considered. Finally, the possibility to combine the different technical solutions was analysed. The paper proposes the definition of daily scheduling referred to lighting energy management, in order to modulate the maximu…
An improved five-parameter model for photovoltaic modules
2010
This paper presents a new five-parameter model capable of analytically describing the I–V characteristic of a photovoltaic module for each generic condition of operative temperature and solar irradiance. The parameters of the equivalent electrical circuit are extracted by solving a system of equations based on data commonly issued by manufacturers in standard rating conditions with a trial and error process. The procedure, which does not require any special equations solver, can be easily coded into a short software routine using simple languages and finds the solution of the system of equations with the desired accuracy without needing to be guided towards solutions starting from fitted in…
Physical and antibacterial properties of PLA electrospun mats loaded with carvacrol and nisin
2022
Functional, biopolymeric electrospun structures for the controlled release of antimicrobial agents are gaining in-creasing interest in food packaging applications. In this study, the physical and antibacterial performances of ternary systems composed of polylactic acid (PLA) electrospun mats loaded with 20 wt% of different relative amounts of carvacrol (CRV) and a commercial nisin formulation (Nis) were assessed. Scanning electron micrographs displayed micro-scaled fibers with different diameter size distributions depending on the relative concentrations of the additives. The PLA/CRV/Nis membranes??? wettability was affected by the relative amount of CRV and Nis loaded, switching from hydro…
