A hybrid method for calorimetry with subnanoliter samples using Schottky junctions

A μm-scale calorimeter realized by using Schottky junctions as a thermometer is presented. Combined with a hybrid experimental method, it enables simultaneous time-resolved measurements of variations in both the energy and the heat capacity of subnanoliter samples.

Abstract Phytoremediation technologies such as constructed wetlands have shown higher efficiencies in removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewaters than conventional wastewater treatment processes, and plants seem to have an important role in the removal of some of those compounds. In this context, a study was conducted to assess tolerance, uptake, and metabolism of the epilepsy drug, carbamazepine, by the macrophyte Typha spp. This evaluation was conducted in hydroponic solutions with 0.5–2.0 mg/L of this pharmaceutical for a maximum period of 21 days. Light Scattering Measurements of Hemoglobin Critical Fluctuation and the Energy Landscape For Polymerization

We have developed a novel method for measuring light scattering to observe critical fluctuations in hemoglobin (Hb) solutions. A small rectangular cell (0.2 x 4.0 x 30 mm) is filled with 24 μL of Hb solution. An optical fiber with outer diameter of 125 μm (62.5 μm core) is sealed into the cell in contact with the solution, and light scattering is measured at 90°. The flat faces of the cell permit measuring absorbance spectra to ensure sample integrity. The scattering source is a 785 nm laser diode that delivers 1.5 mW to the sample. Introduction: Alkanes are biodegraded to generate the corresponding primary alcohol trough alkane hydroxylases (AHs) consisting on an integral membrane alkane monooxygenase (AlkB) and two soluble proteins, rubredoxin and rubredoxin reductase. Recently, an alkB gene was reported to be involved in degradation of long chain n-alkanes in the actinobacterium Gordonia sp. SoCg. This gene was expressed in Streptomyces coelicolor M145 which is unable to degrade n-alkanes. Abstract The degradation of the phosphonate herbicide glyphosate ( N -phosphonomethylglycine) by four taxonomically distinct microorganisms was studied in vivo in whole cell system using phosphorus nuclear magnetic spectroscopy ( 31 P NMR). The time-course of glyphosate metabolization in dense cell cultures was followed by means of 31 P NMR up to 21 days after the addition. The results obtained by this non-invasive way confirmed that the cells of Spirulina platensis and Streptomyces lusitanus biodegrade herbicide. Abstract Diode laser spectra of SF 5 Cl have been recorded in the ν 8 band region at a temperature of ca. 240 K, a pressure of 0.25 mbar and an instrumental bandwidth of ca. 0.001 cm −1 . Four regions have been studied: a first one in the P -branch (906.849–907.687 cm −1 ), a second one in the Q -branch (910.407–910.944 cm −1 ), and two other ones in the R -branch (913.957–914.556 and 917.853–918.705 cm −1 ). The whole ν 1 / ν 8 dyad of SF 5 35 Cl has been previously recorded in the group of Professor H. Burger in Wuppertal, thanks to a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer [J. Mol.
