Abstract Four new quaternary ammonium iodides, (Me 2 Pe 2 N)I, (Me 2 Hex 2 N)I, (Et 2 Pe 2 N)I and (Et 2 Hex 2 N)I, were synthesized and studied as electrolytes in dye-sensitized solar cells. All compounds were solids at room temperature. Influence of varying amounts of elemental iodine and the effect of tert -butylpyridine (TBP) on the performance of the cell was also studied. Addition of iodine lowered the melting points of the resulting polyiodides. From the ammonium iodides only (Me 2 Hex 2 N)I:I 2 (10:1) was liquid at the room temperature and the others were soft solids. Abstract The two forms of human plasma C2 that were described in the preceding report (1) were investigated for their functional and biochemical differences. Incubation with the neuraminidase (NAN'dase) of Clostridium perfringens at 37°C resulted in a four- to fivefold increase in the hemolytic activity of both forms. The increase in activity was different than the increase caused by treatment with iodine. The mechanism of increased activity of NAN'dase-treated C2 was the generation of increased molecules of activated C3 (C3b), resulting in more molecules of C5 binding to (C4b, 2a, 3b)n. AbstractThe glycine–alanine repeat (GAr) of the Epstein–Barr virus nuclear antigen-1 is a cis-acting transferable element that inhibits ubiquitin/proteasome-dependent proteolysis in vitro and in vivo. We have here examined the effect of a synthetic 20-mer GAr oligopeptide on the degradation of iodinated or biotin labeled lysozyme in a rabbit reticulocyte lysates in vitro assay. Micromolar concentrations of the GA-20 peptide inhibited the hydrolysis of lysozyme without significant effect on ubiquitination. Addition of the peptide did not inhibit the hydrolysis of fluorogenic substrate by purified proteasomes and did not affect the ubiquitination of lysozyme. An excess of the peptide failed t…

Abstract The hyperfine structure splittings of the P(10)14-1, R(15)14-1, and R(99)15-1 transitions at 585 nm, P(62)17-1 at 576 nm, and P(80)21-1 at 565 nm in 127 I 2 are measured by heterodyne spectroscopy using two dye lasers. In addition, the absolute frequencies of the hyperfine components P(10)14-1 a 15 and P(80)21-1 a 10 are determined using a self-referenced frequency comb. These frequencies are used in an experiment testing relativistic time dilation by laser spectroscopy on a fast ion beam.

OBJECTIVE--To detect infection with HIV-1 by IgA and IgM response at birth in children born to HIV-1 seropositive mothers. DESIGN--Western blotting and radioimmune western blotting on stored sera from infected and uninfected babies born to HIV-1 seropositive mothers. Sera were pretreated to remove IgG. SETTING--Parma and Bologna, Italy. SUBJECTS--12 infected and five uninfected babies born to HIV-1 seropositive mothers and three babies born to seronegative mothers.
