Genetic diversity and phenotypic characterization of Iodobacter limnosediminis associated with skin lesions in freshwater fish

2021

The relatively unknown genus Iodobacter sp. has been repeatedly isolated from skin ulcers and saprolegniosis on freshwater fish in Finland, especially farmed salmonids. Genetic characterization verified that all 23 bacterial isolates studied here belonged to the species Iodobacter limnosediminis, previously undescribed from the fish microbiota. Whole-genome pulsed-field gel electrophoresis revealed variability between the I. limnosediminis strains, suggesting that they were most likely of environmental origin. Two I. limnosediminis strains caused lesions in 27%–53% of brown trout (Salmo trutta) injected intramuscularly (p ≤ .05). The lesions represented moderate to severe tissue damage, but…

Nonintrusive monitoring and quantitative analysis of strong laser-field-induced impulsive alignment

2004

We report the observation of impulsive alignment of $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ molecules produced through their interaction with a nonresonant, strong laser pulse. The periodic alignment is monitored using a polarization technique generally employed in optical Kerr effect experiments; the birefringence produced by alignment of the molecular sample is measured with a weak pulse, time-delayed with respect to the alignment pulse. The technique provides a signal proportional to $⟨{\mathrm{cos}}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\theta}⟩\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{3}$, where $\ensuremath{\theta}$ is the polar angle between the molecular axis and the strong-field polarization axis. Experimen…

Background discrimination capabilities of a heat and ionization germanium cryogenic detector

2001

The discrimination capabilities of a 70 g heat and ionization Ge bolometer are studied. This first prototype has been used by the EDELWEISS Dark Matter experiment, installed in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane, for direct detection of WIMPs. Gamma and neutron calibrations demonstrate that this type of detector is able to reject more than 99.6% of the background while retaining 95% of the signal, provided that the background events distribution is not biased towards the surface of the Ge crystal. However, the 1.17 kg.day of data taken in a relatively important radioactive environment show an extra population slightly overlapping the signal. This background is likely due to interactions o…

Recent advances on ionic liquid uses in separation techniques

2018

International audience; The molten organic salts with melting point below 100°C, commonly called ionic liquids (ILs) have found numerous uses in separation sciences due to their exceptional properties as non molecular solvents, namely, a negligible vapor pressure, a high thermal stability, and unique solvating properties due to polarity and their ionic character of molten salts. Other properties, such as viscosity, boiling point, water solubility, and electrochemical window, are adjustable playing with which anion is associated with which cation. This review focuses on recent development of the uses of ILs in separation techniques actualizing our 2008 article (same authors, J. Chromatogr. A…

Dynamic chemical devices: photoinduced electron transfer and its ion-triggered switching in nanomechanical butterfly-type bis(porphyrin)terpyridines.

2005

A series of butterfly-type molecular constructs has been prepared in good yield by using a double Stille coupling synthetic protocol. They are composed of a terpyridine (terpy) scaffold and two wings composed of appended porphyrins that are capable of switching from an extended W geometry to a compact U geometry upon cation coordination of the terpy unit. The porphyrin moieties exist in the constructs either as free bases or they can be sequentially metallated, thus giving rise to wings of different "colours". Stationary and time-resolved emission studies of the HZn, ZnAu and Zn2Au constructs show that the electronic properties are strongly dependent on the geometry. In the extended W confo…

Critical assessment of ionization patterns and applications of ambient desorption/ionization mass spectrometry using FAPA-MS

2016

Ambient desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MS) has gained growing interest during the last decade due to its high analytical performance and yet simplicity. Here, one of the recently developed ambient desorption/ionization MS sources, the flowing atmospheric-pressure afterglow (FAPA) source, was investigated in detail regarding background ions and typical ionization patterns in the positive as well as the negative ion mode for a variety of compound classes, comprising alkanes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, organic peroxides and alkaloids. A broad range of signals for adducts and losses was found, besides the usually emphasized detection of quasimolecular ions, i.e. […

A new interface to couple thin-layer chromatography with laser desorption/atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry for plate scanni…

2005

An interface to allow on-line qualitative and quantitative full-plate detection and analysis of compounds separated by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) is presented. A continuous wave diode laser is employed as a desorption source. Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry ionizes and subsequently identifies the desorbed sample molecules. Besides direct laser desorption on untreated TLC plates, graphite particles were used as a matrix to couple in the laser power and improve the efficiency of desorption.

Measurement of nanoparticle mass distributions by laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

2011

In this paper, access to the mass distribution analysis of nanoparticles is described based on laser desorption/ionization and time of flight mass spectrometry. Two examples are given, demonstrating the accurate mass distribution analysis of nanoparticles fabricated both ex situ and in situ during the laser-assisted desorption process. The potentials and the limitations of the method are discussed, with special emphasis on carbonaceous clusters and molecules.

Ultrahigh-Resolution Mass Spectrometry in Real Time: Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry of Atmospheric Organic Aeros…

2018

The accurate and precise mass spectrometric measurement of organic compounds in atmospheric aerosol particles is a challenging task that requires analytical developments and adaptations of existing techniques for the atmospheric application. Here we describe the development and characterization of an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization Orbitrap mass spectrometer (APCI-Orbitrap-MS) for the measurement of organic aerosol in real time. APCI is a well-known ionization technique, featuring minimal fragmentation and matrix dependencies, and allows rapid alternation between the positive and negative ionization mode. As a proof of principle, we report ambient organic aerosol composition in rea…

Determination of acrylamide in coffee and chocolate by pressurised fluid extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

2007

A selective and sensitive procedure has been developed and validated for the determination of acrylamide in difficult matrices, such as coffee and chocolate. The proposed method includes pressurised fluid extraction (PFE) with acetonitrile, florisil clean-up purification inside the PFE extraction cell and detection by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to atmospheric pressure ionisation in positive mode tandem mass spectrometry (APCI-MS-MS). Comparison of ionisation sources (atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI), atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) and the combined APCI/APPI) and clean-up procedures were carried out to improve the analytical signal. The main parameters aff…
