Tetraphyllidean plerocercoids from Western Mediterranean cetaceans and other marine mammals around the world: a comprehensive morphological analysis.

2005

Tetraphyllidean plerocercoids have occasionally been reported in marine mammals, but they have rarely been described in detail, and the ecological significance of these infections is unclear. We described plerocercoids collected from the mucosa of the terminal colon and rectum, the anal crypts, and the hepatopancreatic ducts of 7 striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba, 1 Cuvier's beaked whale Ziphius cavirostris, and 3 Risso's dolphins Grampus griseus from the Spanish Mediterranean. We also examined undescribed plerocercoids from 3 cetacean species from the Atlantic and the Pacific. All plerocercoids had a lanceolate body, and a scolex with an apical sucker and 4 sessile monolocular bothrid…

Gastrointestinal helminths of Risso's dolphin Grampus griseus from the Western Mediterranean.

2003

The gastrointestinal helminth fauna of 17 Risso's dolphins Grampus griseus (Cuvier, 1812) from the Western Mediterranean was analysed. Five helminth species were found. Adults and juveniles of Hadwenius delamurei were collected from the duodenum of 7 animals. Adults were located significantly more anteriorly than juveniles, which is compatible with a previous hypothesis that species of Hadwe- nius undergo an ontogenetic migration towards the anterior duodenum. Eggs from Pholeter gastrophilus appeared in 1 small cyst in the main stomach. Adults of Tetrabothrius forsteri and Trigonocotyle globicephalae were collected from the duodenum of 1 and 4 individuals, respectively. Metaces- todes, Scol…

Epizootic of dolphin morbillivirus on the Catalonian Mediterranean coast in 2007

2011

BETWEEN 1990 and 1992, thousands of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) stranded along the Mediterranean coast due to a newly described virus, the dolphin morbillivirus (DMV) (Domingo and others 1990, 1992). DMV is one of the several morbilliviruses that have killed marine mammals worldwide since 1987 (Di Guardo and others 2005). A new DMV epizootic has been recently confirmed from the Mediterranean Spanish and French coasts during 2007 to 2008 (Fernández and others 2008, Raga and others 2008, Keck and others 2010). This short communication describes the pathological findings associated with DMV infection and secondary infections, observed during this epizootic on the Mediterranean coa…

Vaginadialogeja : kuukautisveren tabu Hanni Haapaniemen Neitsyt Maria -maalauksissa

2015

Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa käsitellään kuukautisveren symboliikkaa taiteessa. Tutkimuskohteina ovat Hanni Haapaniemen kolme kuukautisverellä maalattua Neitsyt Maria -aiheista teosta. Tutkimuskysymys voiko lika rikkoa pyhän idean? johdattaa selvittämään pyhän käsitteen muodostumista sekä kansanuskon että kristinuskon konteksteissa, sillä yhteisöt ovat jo ennen kirkkouskontojen syntymistä erottaneet pyhää määrittäneet kohteensa profaanista erilaisin tabusäännöin määritellyin rajanvedoin. Kuukautisveren symboliikka on kahtiajakoinen, sillä se pyhän veren metaforana yhdistyy ruumiineritteeseen, joka ylittää ihmisruumiin symboliset ja fyysiset rajat ”tunkeutuen” ulos pyhän, eheän ruumiin yhte…

DIRECT NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF MOTION OF FERROMAGNETIC PARTICLES IN MAGNETORHEOLOGICAL SUSPENSION

2008

ABSTRACT Results simulation of magnetorheological suspension at particle level are reported. The present approach accounts for a better description of hydrodynamic interaction between close spheres. Development of lamellar structures similar to those obtained by other researchers in Poiseuille flow is observed in shear flow. Studies of single layer lamellar structures reveal presence of short chains and more complex aggregates.

Cross-stream migration of a Brownian droplet in a polymer solution under Poiseuille flow

2018

The migration of a Brownian fluid droplet in a parallel-plate microchannel was investigated using dissipative particle dynamics computer simulations. In a Newtonian solvent, the droplet migrated toward the channel walls due to inertial effects at the studied flow conditions, in agreement with theoretical predictions and recent simulations. However, the droplet focused onto the channel centerline when polymer chains were added to the solvent. Focusing was typically enhanced for longer polymers and higher polymer concentrations with a nontrivial flow-rate dependence due to droplet and polymer deformability. Brownian motion caused the droplet position to fluctuate with a distribution that prim…

Diet of Risso's dolphin (<i>Grampus griseus</i>) in the western Mediterranean Sea

2006

The diet of Risso’s dolphin in the Mediterranean is described based on 15 animals stranded between 40°25’N 00°32’W and 37°35’N 00°45’E from April 1987 to January 2003. The prey were mainly oceanic cephalopods. Pelagic octopods, especially A. argo, were the most abundant (mean = 41.28%; SD±34.32). Species belonging to the families Ommastrephidae, Histioteuthidae and Onychoteuthidae were also frequent components of its diet. The bathymetric distribution of cephalopods shows that Risso’s dolphin preferentially feeds on the middle slope (600 to 800 m depth) in the Mediterranean.

Influence of environmental factors on small cetacean distribution in the Spanish Mediterranean

2008

Habitat distribution models are one of the most up to date methods to study the habitat usage of wildlife populations. They allow animal distribution to be related to environmental features and also the prediction of the distribution of animals based on this relationship. Seasonal aerial surveys were conducted in central Spanish Mediterranean waters from June 2000 to March 2003 to obtain information on the distribution of cetacean species. Data from the three most common cetacean species (striped dolphin,Stenella coeruleoalba, bottlenose dolphin,Tursiops truncatus, and Risso's dolphin,Grampus griseus) were related, using generalized linear models, to local environmental features: depth, slo…
