Colonoscopy and reduction of colorectal cancer risk by molecular tumor subtypes: a population-based case-control study

2020

AbstractObjectiveIn previous studies, the protective effect of colonoscopy was generally stronger for distal than for proximal colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed to investigate whether the association of colonoscopy and CRC risk varies according to major molecular pathological features and pathways of CRC.DesignPopulation-based case-control study from Germany, including 2132 patients with a first diagnosis of CRC and information on major molecular tumor markers, and 2486 control participants without CRC. Detailed participant characteristics were collected by standardized questionnaires and information on previous colonoscopy was derived from medical records. Polytomous logistic regre…

Distribution of risk factors, plasma lipids, lipoproteins and dyslipidemias in a small Mediterranean island: The Ustica Project

2003

Background and Aim: The populations of the Mediterranean area have a low incidence of cardiovascular disease (CHD). The aims of this paper are: 1) to present demographic data of the population of Ustica, a small island in the southern part of the Tyrrhenian sea that has reduced communications with the mainland and a diet presumably rich in fish; and 2) to evaluate the distribution of risk fa tors, plasma lipids, lipoproteins and dyslipidemias in this population. Methods and Results: We invited all of the free-living resident population aged more than 14 years (about 800 individuals) to participate in the study; 57 responded, for a participation rate of about 73%. The distribution of cardiov…

DNA methylation patterns in newborns exposed to tobacco in utero

2015

[Background] Maternal smoking during pregnancy is a major risk factor for adverse health outcomes. The main objective of the study was to assess the impact of in utero tobacco exposure on DNA methylation in children born at term with appropriate weight at birth.

Genome-wide analysis reveals DNA methylation markers that vary with both age and obesity

2014

AbstractThe combination of the obesity epidemic and an aging population presents growing challenges for the healthcare system. Obesity and aging are major risk factors for a diverse number of diseases and it is of importance to understand their interaction and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Herein the authors examined the methylation levels of 27578 CpG sites in 46 samples from adult peripheral blood. The effect of obesity and aging was ascertained with general linear models. More than one hundred probes were correlated to aging, nine of which belonged to the KEGG group map04080. Additionally, 10 CpG sites had diverse methylation profiles in obese and lean individuals, one of which wa…

High Prevalence and Fast Rising Incidence of Multiple Sclerosis in Caltanissetta, Sicily, Southern Italy

2006

Background: Epidemiological studies conducted in Sicily and Sardinia, the two major Mediterranean islands, showed elevated incidence and prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS)and a recent increase in disease frequency. Objective: To confirm the central highlands of Sicily as areas of increasing MS prevalence and elevated incidence, we performed a follow-up study based on the town of Caltanissetta (Sicily), southern Italy. Methods: We made a formal diagnostic reappraisal of all living patients found in the previous study performed in 1981. All possible information sources were used to search for patients affected by MS diagnosed accordi…

Reverse Homodigital Dorsal Radial Flap of the Thumb.

2006

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of extensive distal defects of the thumb with exposure of bone, tendon, or joint can be a difficult problem because immediate closure is of paramount importance for preserving function and avoiding complications. Surgical treatment includes the use of local, reverse flow, and free flaps. The authors describe a new reverse homodigital flap to repair distal defects of the thumb. This flap is raised from the dorsal radial side of the first metacarpal area. It is pedicled on the dorsal radial collateral artery, which is constant for course, caliber, and communication with the palmar circuit. METHODS: The flap is raised by means of distal to proximal dissection, the sk…

Innervated Island Flaps in Morphofunctional Vulvar Reconstruction

2000

In this article, the authors present their own experience in vulvar reconstruction following vulvectomy using two different innervated island flaps according to the size and site of the defect. Island-flap mobilization is possible thanks to the rich blood supply of the perineal region. The methods described are a "V-Y amplified sliding flap from the pubis" and a "fasciocutaneous island flap" raised from one or both gluteal folds. The V-Y amplified sliding flap from the pubis is indicated when the defect is symmetric and located anteriorly. This flap is harvested from the pubis and vascularized by the deep arterial network of the pubis. Sensory innervation is provided by branches of the ileo…

Superior pedicle retroauricular island flap for ear and temporal region reconstruction: anatomic investigation and 52 cases series.

2008

Superior pedicle retroauricular island flap for ear and temporal region reconstruction: anatomic investigation and 52 cases series. Cordova A, Pirrello R, D'Arpa S, Moschella F. Source Cattedra di Chirurgia Plastica e Ricostruttiva, Dipartimento di Discipline Chirurgiche ed Oncologiche, Università degli Studi di Palermo, Palermo, Italy. adriana.cordova@excite.com Abstract BACKGROUND: On the basis of a previously published anatomic study on the superior auricular artery (SAA) and on a series of 52 consecutive cases, the authors propose a new superior pedicle retroauricular island flap (SP-RIF) for defects of the upper half of the ear and for temporal region or superficial helical defects.

Women and movable goods in a maritime border economy in 19th century Sicily (Aeolian Islands)

2020

This chapter focuses on women possessing material goods, and on their informal administration, use, production, maintenance, and transformation in a small Sicilian island, Stromboli in the Aeolian Archipelago, in the first half of the 19th century. To explore this diverse social practices such as work, assistance, personal and familial relationships, and the informal management of money in transactions should all be taken into account. In areas such as Southern Italy, where Roman Law heritage predominated in Medieval and Early Modern age, women’s property rights were quite strong: although they were subject to special restrictions, they enjoyed, at the same time, special protections, as in …
