Background: Some people who by themselves or by others are understood as having mental health problems have written autobiographies about their experiences. Aims: The aim of this study is to explore how people write about their experiences of being mentally ill. Method: Twelve Scandinavian autobiographies were studied using content analysis based on phenomenology and hermeneutics. Results: Three themes were identified: feeling like a stranger in life and places, the transformation of life experiences into questions of disease and feeling ashamed. Occurrence of Edwardsiella tarda in wild European eels Anguilla anguilla from Mediterranean Spain

Pure cultures of Edwarsiella tarda were isolated from body ulcers and internal organs of wild European eels caught in a Mediterranean freshwater coastal lagoon (Albufera Lake, Valencia, Spain) over a 1 yr period. Overall, the E. tarda isolation rate from wild eels was 9%, but this increased to 22.8% in diseased individuals. All 22 E. tarda isolates belonged to the 'wild-type' biogroup of the species and were virulent for eels (lethal dose that kills 50% of exposed individuals [LD50 dose]: 10(4.85) to 10(6.83) CFU ind.(-1)), and therefore represented the aetiological agent of the haemorrhagic disease observed in wild European eels. Rapid isolation of single microbial cells from mixed natural and laboratory populations with the aid of a micromanipulator.

In order to facilitate the isolation of pure cultures from natural habitats we have developed a method for the isolation of single microbial cell clones from a mixed population, e.g. the flora of the termite gut, with the aid of a modern micromanipulator. The separated single prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells were grown after transfer in culture media or they were used for single cell PCR. The micromanipulator was also applied for the removal of nuclei from protozoa, of which the SSU rDNA was directly amplified.

High dispersal rates are known to homogenize host's population genetic structure in panmictic species and to disrupt host local adaptation to the environment. Isolation of Abiotrophia adiacens from a brain abscess which developed in a patient after neurosurgery.

ABSTRACT We report the case of a patient who developed a large brain abscess after neurosurgery. Cerebrospinal fluid from the abscess drainage yielded Abiotrophia adiacens -specific PCR products and microorganisms that were identified by conventional microbiological methods and by 16S ribosomal DNA analysis as Abiotrophia adiacens , which was formerly classified as a member of nutritionally variant streptococci.

For retrospective (forensic or scientific) studies, optimal methods must be employed for DNA long-term storage. We compared Toxoplasma gondii detection before and after DNA storage using real-time PCR. No significant differences were found depending on duration or storage conditions at -20 °C or -80 °C.
