Differences in metabolic profiles of planktonic and biofilm cells in Staphylococcus aureus - (1)H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance search for candidate bio…

2013

Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for many types of infections related to biofilm presence. As the early diagnostics remains the best option for prevention of biofilm infections, the aim of the work presented was to search for differences in metabolite patterns of S. aureus ATCC6538 biofilm vs. free-swimming S. aureus planktonic forms. For this purpose, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was applied. Data obtained were supported by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy, quantitative cultures and X-ray computed microtomography. Metabolic trends accompanying S. aureus biofilm formation were found using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Levels of isoleucine, alanine and 2,3-but…

Valence Topological Charge-Transfer Indices for Reflecting Polarity: Correction for Heteromolecules

2005

Valence topological charge-transfer (CT) indices are applied to the calculation of dipole moments mu. The mu calculated by algebraic and vector semisums of the CT indices are defined. The model is generalized for molecules with heteroatoms and corrected for sp(3)-heteromolecules. The ability of the indices for the description of the molecular charge distribution is established by comparing them with mu of the valence-isoelectronic series of cyclopentadiene, benzene and styrene. Two CT indices, mu(vec) (vector semisum of vertex-pair mu) and mu(vec)V (valence mu(vec)) are proposed. The mu(vec) behaviour is intermediate between mu(vec) and mu(experiment). The correction is produced in the corr…

Recombinant NeutraLite Avidin: a non-glycosylated, acidic mutant of chicken avidin that exhibits high affinity for biotin and low non-specific bindin…

2000

AbstractA recombinant non-glycosylated and acidic form of avidin was designed and expressed in soluble form in baculovirus-infected insect cells. The mutations were based on the same principles that guided the design of the chemically and enzymatically modified avidin derivative, known as NeutraLite Avidin. In this novel recombinant avidin derivative, five out of the eight arginine residues were replaced with neutral amino acids, and two of the lysine residues were replaced by glutamic acid. In addition, the carbohydrate-bearing asparagine-17 residue was altered to an isoleucine, according to the known sequences of avidin-related genes. The resultant mutant protein, termed recombinant Neutr…

A novel mutation (Thr116IIe) in the presenilin 1 gene in a patient with early-onset Alzheimer's disease

2004

We report a novel presenilin 1 (PSN1) mutation (Thr116Ile) in a woman with early onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). This mutation was not found in 100 healthy controls, indicating that this is not a common polymorphism. The patient presented with forgetfulness at age 45, followed over the next 3 years by a worsening of the memory loss and frequent episodes of confusion and spatial disorientation. Neuroimaging studies were consistent with AD. The analysis of the family's pedigree showed that the proband was apparently the only member affected. Because the early death of several close relatives (i.e. the mother and the grandmother) and the demonstration that the father is not a mutation carrier,…

Oxovanadium(V) complexes with tripodal bisphenolate and monophenolate ligands: Syntheses, structures and catalytic activities

2019

Abstract The reactions between [VO(acac)2] (acac– = acetylacetonate) and the tripodal amino bisphenols 6,6′-(((2-morpholinoethyl)azanediyl)bis(methylene))bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenol) (H2L1) and 6,6′-(((thiophen-2-ylmethyl)azanediyl)bis(methylene))bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenol) (H2L2) as well as the tetradentate amino phenol 2,2′-((3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)azanediyl)bis(ethan-1-ol) (H3L3) afford the complexes [VO(L1)(OMe)] (1), [VO(L2)(acac)] (2) and [VO(L3)] (3), correspondingly. Complexes 1 and 3 can also be prepared using VOSO4·xH2O or [VO(OPr)3] as vanadium precursors. When [VO(acac)2] or VOSO4·xH2O is used, mononuclear oxovanadium(V) complexes are formed upon oxidation of the met…
