Theoretical study of the formation reaction of the methyl vinyl ketone: A conformational approach

The formation reaction of both isomers of the methyl vinyl ketone (MVK) from the corresponding alkoxy radicals was investigated by means of theoretical methods based on quantum chemistry. Perturbative unrestricted Moller–Plesset (UMP2) and density functional methods B3LYP and BH and HLYP were used to obtain the stationary points on the potential energy surface. In addition to this, the interconversion reaction between both isomers of the MVK was studied, characterizing the corresponding transition state. The Mechanism of Diene Polymerisation by Organolanthanide Catalysts Deduced from Microwave Experiments

Isoprene polymerisation performed under microwave irradiation with [Nd(BH 4 ) 3 (THF) 3 ]/Mg(Bu) 2 and [Nd-(BH 4 ) 3 (THE) 3 ]/Al(Et) 3 showed an enhancement in reactivity, with selectivity being only slightly modified. An explanation of the observed effect is proposed based on our current knowledge of the catalytic mechanism and by considering the alkylated complex as an ion pair. An analogy is proposed with the pseudoanionic polymerisation of oxygenated monomers. Finally, depolymerisation is observed under microwave irradiation at high temperature.

Anionic Copolymerization Enables the Scalable Synthesis of Alternating (AB)n Multiblock Copolymers with High Molecular Weight in n/2 Steps

Based on the highly disparate reactivities of isoprene (I, rI = 25.4) and 4-methylstyrene (4MS, r4MS = 0.007) in the anionic copolymerization in nonpolar media, a general strategy for the rapid and scalable synthesis of tapered multiblock copolymers with an extremely steep gradient has been developed. A repetitive addition strategy of a mixture of isoprene and 4MS leads to a tapered diblock in each case, giving access to linear alternating multiblock copolymers of the (AB)n type with up to 10 blocks. Abstract. As a major source region of the hydroxyl radical OH, the Tropics largely control the oxidation capacity of the atmosphere on a global scale. However, emissions of hydrocarbons from the tropical rainforest that react rapidly with OH can potentially deplete the amount of OH and thereby reduce the oxidation capacity. The airborne GABRIEL field campaign in equatorial South America (Suriname) in October 2005 investigated the influence of the tropical rainforest on the HOx budget (HOx = OH + HO2). Abstract Theoretical consideration about the impact of methyl groups on the structure and vibrational properties of β-carotenoids, using medium size molecules of trans-butadiene and trans-isoprene, are reported. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations with correlation-consistent and polarization-consistent basis sets were applied to trans-1,3-butadiene and trans-isoprene as the smallest building bricks of β-carotenoids. Water-Tolerant Trifloaluminate Ionic Liquids: New and Unique Lewis Acidic Catalysts for the Synthesis of Chromane

The first example of triflometallate ionic liquids, named in analogy to chlorometallate ionic liquids, is reported. Trifloaluminate ionic liquids, synthesised from 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium triflates and aluminium triflate, were characterised by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy, revealing the existence of oligonuclear, multiply-charged trifloaluminate anions, with multiple bridging triflate modes. One-Step Block Copolymer Synthesis versus Sequential Monomer Addition: A Fundamental Study Reveals That One Methyl Group Makes a Difference

Block copolymers of polyisoprene and polystyrene are key materials for polymer nanostructures as well as for several commercially established thermoplastic elastomers. In a combined experimental and kinetic Monte Carlo simulation study, the direct (i.e., statistical) living anionic copolymerization of a mixture of isoprene (I) and 4-methylstyrene (4MS) in nonpolar media was investigated on a fundamental level. In situ 1H NMR spectroscopy enabled to directly monitor gradient formation during the copolymerization and to determine the nature of the gradient. Organolanthanides, catalysts for specific olefin-diene copolymerization: access to new materials

Abstract Non-hindered ansa dicyclopentadienylallyl complexes of samarium, [(CMe2C5H4)2Sm(allyl)]n, and (CMe2C5H4)2Sm(allyl)L (L=THF or allylLi) polymerize isoprene without an aluminum cocatalyst. The polymerizations are highly stereospecific, affording nearly quantitatively 1–4 trans polyisoprene. In the presence of linear 1-olefins, copolymers are formed, with 6–10% of olefin inserted; the 1–4 trans structure of the polyisoprene chain is not altered, and only one olefin molecule is inserted between two polyisoprene fragments.
