Background and aims: HCV eradication improves non-hepatic outcomes such as cardiovascular diseases, although without clearly defined mechanisms. In this study we aimed to assess whether improvement of carotid atherosclerosis may be linked to a reduction in systemic oxidative stress after viral clearance. International audience; F2-isoprostanes (F2-isoPs) represent a new family of biomarkers for oxidative stress generated by free radical attack of membrane-bounded arachidonic acid. Esterified F2-isoPs can be found in tissue or plasma lipids whereas the free form F2-isoPs, hydrolyzed by phospholipase, is mainly present in body fluids. The extent of systematic damage due to oxidative stress within the body can be assessed by the determination of plasma or urine F2-isoPs. BACKGROUND: Obesity is a prognostic factor for severity in acute pancreatitis in humans. Our aim was to assess the role of oxidative stress and abdominal fat in the increased severity of acute pancreatitis in obese rats. METHODOLOGY: Taurocholate-induced acute pancreatitis was performed in lean and obese Zucker rats. Levels of reduced glutathione, oxidized glutathione, L-cysteine, cystine, and S-adenosylmethionine were measured in pancreas as well as the activities of serine/threonine protein phosphatases PP1 and PP2A and tyrosin phosphatases. Silibinin improves hepatic and myocardial injury in mice with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

Abstract Background Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a chronic metabolic disorder with significant impact on cardiovascular and liver mortality. Aims In this study, we examined the effects of silibinin on liver and myocardium injury in an experimental model of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Methods A four-week daily dose of silibinin (20 mg/kg i.p.) was administrated to db/db mice fed a methionine–choline deficient diet. Hepatic and myocardial histology, oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines were evaluated. Estradiol reduces F2α-isoprostane production in cultured human endothelial cells

Free radical-generated F2α-isoprostanes are a group of compounds with vasoconstrictor properties. To investigate whether estradiol exerts antioxidant actions modifying F2α-isoprostane production, cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells were exposed to estradiol and other compounds and F2α-isoprostanes were measured in culture medium. Exposure to 1 and 10 nM estradiol for 24 h reduced F2α-isoprostane production by 36 and 49%, respectively ( P < 0.001 vs. control). Exposure to antiestrogens alone (ICI-182780 or EM-652) slightly reduced F2α-isoprostanes ( P < 0.05 vs. control), but much less than exposure to estradiol ( P < 0.05). Preterm Resuscitation With Low Oxygen Causes Less Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Chronic Lung Disease

OBJECTIVE: The goal was to reduce adverse pulmonary adverse outcomes, oxidative stress, and inflammation in neonates of 24 to 28 weeks of gestation initially resuscitated with fractions of inspired oxygen of 30% or 90%. METHODS: Randomized assignment to receive 30% (N = 37) or 90% (N = 41) oxygen was performed. Targeted oxygen saturation values were 75% at 5 minutes and 85% at 10 minutes.
