Micro-Raman spectroscopic characterization of a CR-39 detector.

Characterization by micro-Raman spectroscopy of polymeric materials used as nuclear track detectors reveals physico-chemical and morphological information on the material's molecular structure. In this work, the nuclear track detector poly(allyl diglycol carbonate), or Columbia Resin .39 (CR-39), was characterized according to the fluence of alpha particles produced by a 226Ra source and chemical etching time. Therefore, damage of the CR-39 chemical structure due to the alpha-particle interaction with the detector was analyzed at the molecular level. A three-dimensional boundary element model for the analysis of polycrystalline materials at the microscale

A three-dimensional multi-domain anisotropic boundary element formulation is presented for the analysis of polycrystalline microstructures. The formulation is naturally expressed in terms of intergranular displacements and tractions that play an important role in polycrystalline micromechanics, micro-damage and micro-cracking. The artificial morphology is generated by Hardcore Voronoi tessellation, which embodies the main statistical features of polycrystalline microstructures. Optical properties of the low-molecular amorphous azochromophores and their application in holography

The films based on the low-molecular amorphous azochromophore 2-(3-(4-((4- (Ethyl(2-(trityloxy)ethyl)amino)phenyl)diazenyl)styryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enylidene) malononitrile (IWK-2M) were prepared. Automatic Extraction of Blood Vessels, Bifurcations and End Points in the Retinal Vascular Tree

In this paper we present an effective algorithm for automated extraction of the vascular tree in retinal images, including bifurcations, crossovers and end-points detection. Correct identification of these features in the ocular fundus helps the diagnosis of important systematic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension. The pre-processing consists in artefacts removal based on anisotropic diffusion filter. Then a matched filter is applied to enhance blood vessels. The filter uses a full adaptive kernel because each vessel has a proper orientation and thickness. The kernel of the filter needs to be rotated for all possible directions. Sensing properties of assembled Bi2S3nanowire arrays

Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanowires were grown in porous aluminium oxide template and a selective chemical etching was applied to transfer the nanowires to a solution. Well aligned nanowire arrays were assembled on pre-patterned silicon substrates employing dielectrophoresis. Electron beam lithography was used to connect aligned individual nanowires to the common macroelectrode. In order to evaluate the conductometric sensing performance of the Bi2S3 nanowires, current–voltage characteristics were measured at different relative humidity (RH) levels (5–80%) / argon medium. Semiflexible Polymers in the Bulk and Confined by Planar Walls

Semiflexible polymers in solution under good solvent conditions can undergo an isotropic-nematic transition. This transition is reminiscent of the well-known entropically-driven transition of hard rods described by Onsager’s theory, but the flexibility of the macromolecules causes specific differences in behavior, such as anomalous long wavelength fluctuations in the ordered phase, which can be understood by the concept of the deflection length. A cohesive boundary element approach to material degradation in three-dimensional polycrystalline aggregates

A new three-dimensional grain-level formulation for intergranular degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials is presented. The polycrystalline microstructure is represented as a Voronoi tessellation and the boundary element method is used to express the elastic problem for each crystal of the aggregate. The continuity of the aggregate is enforced through suitable conditions at the intergranular interfaces. Molecular correlation functions for uniaxial ellipsoids in the isotropic state

We perform event-driven molecular dynamics simulations of a system composed by uniaxial hard ellipsoids for different values of the aspect-ratio and packing fraction . We compare the molecular orientational-dependent structure factors previously calculated within the Percus-Yevick approximation with the numerical results. The agreement between theoretical and numerical results is rather satisfactory. We also show that, for specific orientational quantities, the molecular structure factors are sensitive to the particle shape and can be used to distinguish prolate from oblate ellipsoids.
