Diffraction management and sub-diffractive solitons in periodically driven Bose–Einstein condensates

Abstract We theoretically investigate the diffraction management in Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in one- (1D), two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) geometries. The management technique is based on the superposition of harmonic lattices’ potentials moving at a common speed but in different directions, leading to a harmonic spatio-temporal modulation of the potential. In this way a reduction in, and eventually the disappearance of usual diffraction and emergence of fourth-order diffraction are achieved. Polarization holograms and diffraction anisotropy in amorphous chalcogenides

Polarization hologram recording based on the effect of photoinduced anisotropy (PA) is reviewed, focusing on amorphous chalcogenides (ACh). Possible PA mechanisms in ACh are considered. Polarization holographic grating recording in amorphous As?S?Se (a-As?S?Se) films is experimentally studied and analysed in comparison with scalar recording. Non-Homogeneity of Lateral Resolution in Integral Imaging

We evaluate the lateral resolution in reconstructed integral images. Our analysis takes into account both the diffraction effects in the image capture stage and the lack of homogeneity and isotropy in the reconstruction stage. We have used Monte Carlo simulation in order to assign a value for the resolution limit to any reconstruction plane. We have modelled the resolution behavior. Although in general the resolution limit increases proportionally to the distance to the lens array, there are some periodically distributed singularity planes. The phenomenon is supported by experiments.

STRUCTURE AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF COBALT FERRITE PARTICLES PRODUCED BY METHOD OF PYROLYTIC SYNTHESIS

ABSTRACT Magnetic fine particles of cobalt ferrite have been prepared by method of pyrolytic synthesis. X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of single-phase cobalt ferrite nanoparticles in the range 6–50 nm. The size of the particles varies depending on matrix dispersity and mass content in the organic precursors. A large coercivity observed to be small for smaller single-domain particles due to superparamagnetic behavior.

High-pressure structural, elastic, and thermodynamic properties of zircon-type HoPO4 and TmPO4

[EN] Zircon-type holmium phosphate (HoPO4) and thulium phosphate (TmPO4) have been studied by single-crystal x-ray diffraction and ab initio calculations. We report on the influence of pressure on the crystal structure, and on the elastic and thermodynamic properties. The equation of state for both compounds is accurately determined. We have also obtained information on the polyhedral compressibility which is used to explain the anisotropic axial compressibility and the bulk compressibility. Both compounds are ductile and more resistive to volume compression than to shear deformation at all pressures. Furthermore, the elastic anisotropy is enhanced upon compression. Domain shapes and monolayer structures of triple-chain phospholipids on water

Two triple-chain phospholipid isomers were investigated at the air-water interface by means of fluorescence microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GID). The two lipids differ only in the position of the branched chain at the glycerol backbone. Fluorescence microscopy shows different domain sharp-edged domains. In the case of dendritic domains the chains are more tilted, the deviation from hexagonal symmetry is more pronounced and hence the lattice anisotropy is larger.

Morphology and structures in double-, triple- and quadruple-chain phospholipid monolayers at the air/water interface

The structure of double-, triple- and quadruple-chain phospholipid monolayers has been studied by Synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The double-chain mixed- linkage species exhibit an oblique structure at all pressures investigated. The triple-chain phospholipids show at lower lateral pressures a rectangular unit cell with a phase transition at higher pressures to a hexagonal packing of vertically arranged chains. The quadruple- chain lipid exhibits only the hexagonal phase structure. The position of the ether linkage and of the branched chain on the glycerol backbone has also a strong influence on the monolayer structures. The Phases of Phosphatidyl Ethanolamine Monolayers

For the first time phospholipid monolayers at the air/water interface have been studied by X-ray diffraction and reflection along the whole isotherm from the isotropic fluid to the ordered phases [1]. The model used to analyze the data — and the accuracy of the parameters deduced — were tested by comparing the results obtained with two lipids having the same head group but different chain lengths.

Damage and plasticity at the interfaces in composite materials and structures

Abstract The structural behavior at the interface between two surfaces of ductile, brittle or quasi-brittle materials is studied by a new analytical elastoplastic damaging model. The model is developed in the framework of a thermodynamically consistent theory. The Helmholtz free energy is written to predict the materials’ hardening or softening. An isotropic damage is considered and the possible effects of dilatancy are taken into account including non-associative flow rules. The interface laws are presented both in a rate and a discrete incremental form. Vibrations of weakly coupled nanoparticles

The vibrations of a coupled pair of isotropic silver spheres are investigated and compared with the vibrations of the single isolated spheres. Situations of both strong coupling and also weak coupling are investigated using continuum elasticity and perturbation theory. The numerical calculation of the eigenmodes of such dimers is augmented with a symmetry analysis. This checks the convergence and applicability of the numerical method and shows how the eigenmodes of the dimer are constructed from those of the isolated spheres.
