The guardians of European football : UEFA Financial Fair Play and the career of social problems

2016

AbstractUEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) policy represents a severe regulatory intervention in European club football competitions. While potential outcomes of the concept have been thoroughly assessed, there is little research on the genesis and background behind its implementation. The present paper fills this gap by analyzing the discourse in the run-up to the passage of FFP. We focus on interpreted practice and context and argue that the rising indebtedness of clubs and their increasing reliance on benefactors were a necessary but not sufficient requirement. Further ingredients imperative for the successful policy development were claims-making activities by influential actors to secure…

Hip muscle function in patients with symptomatic femoroacetabular impingement

2014

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a pathomechanical process of the hip joint, which could lead to hip pain and functional disability. Aim of this thesis was to investigate hip muscle function in patients with a symptomatic FAI. Hip muscle function was first investigated before patients underwent any surgical treatment for managing FAI. It was shown that they present with reduced hip muscle strength (i.e., muscle weakness), probably due to hip muscle inhibition. Nevertheless, hip muscle weakness was not associated with exaggerated hip muscle fatigue. Hip muscle strength recovery was then evaluated in a series of patients after hip arthroscopy to treat FAI. These patients demonstrated a g…

Sport as a Vehicle for Health Promotion (and More)

2015

The aim of this chapter is to discuss the theoretical grounds and different forms of activities for sports settings to promote health and social issues. In particular, the chapter describes five models of settings-based health promotion (of increasing sophistication and effectiveness) through which these issues can be addressed in sports settings: Passive—described as the most ‘traditional’ model, in which a parcular setting is used by outside expert to “only” reach people. Active—in which there is still focus on the individual, but the significance of the setting is at least acknowledged and the immediate resources of the setting are used to promote the individual’s health. Vehicle—remains…

Role of polysialic acid (PSA) in the control of food intake and body weight

2013

Hypothalamus plays a major role in the regulation of energy homeostasis by the presence of neural circuits controlling food intake. These circuits are plastic and can be rewired during adulthood. We hypothesized that synaptic plasticity can occur during physiological conditions. We have shown that synaptic contact on hypothalamic anorexigen POMC neurons are rewired in mouse upon high fat diet (HFD). This synaptic process is mandatory to adjust energy intake and requires the glycan PSA (polysialic acid). PSA promotes synaptic plasticity in the brain by the weakening of cell-to-cell interaction by addition on NCAM (neural cell adhesion molecule). We hypothesized that a defect in brain synapti…

The significance of the concept of sin for bioethics.

2005

After a period during which the theological categories of sin and forgiveness were ignored or trivialized, presently these notions are being rediscovered. What could their impact be on bioethics, either in the narrow sense of medical ethics, or in the more encompassing sense of the ethics of the life sciences? This essay begins with describing the processes of transcending and ethitization, which gave rise to the biblical notion of sin. It portrays the theological foundation of sin in terms of a twofold refusal of proper relations to God and other humans. Through the practise of confession in the face of God (coram deo), sin is placed into a horizon of hope for forgiveness and reconciliatio…

From mental hygiene to mental health: ideology, discourses and practices in Franco’s Spain (1939–75)

2017

Based on an analysis of the discourses, the ideological appropriation and the practical influence of mental hygiene in Spanish psychiatry during the early years of the Francoist regime, this article examines its decline and subsequent replacement by the new concept of mental health promoted by the World Health Organization and other international bodies from the mid-twentieth century. The old approach, essentially focused on the prophylaxis of insanity within the framework of a set of interventionist policies of social defence, was thus transformed from the beginning of the 1960s into a much more ambitious and comprehensive project which sought to promote the psychosocial balance and perfo…

Comparison of the structure of the plasma-facing surface and tritium accumulation in beryllium tiles from JET ILW campaigns 2011-2012 and 2013-2014

2019

In this study, beryllium tiles from Joint European Torus (JET) vacuum vessel wall were analysed and compared regarding their position in the vacuum vessel and differences in the exploitation conditions during two campaigns of ITER-Like-Wall (ILW) in 2011-2012 (ILW1) and 2013-2014 (ILW2) Tritium content in beryllium samples were assessed. Two methods were used to measure tritium content in the samples - dissolution under controlled conditions and tritium thermal desorption. Prior to desorption and dissolution experiments, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy were used to study structure and chemical composition of plasma-facing-surfaces of the beryllium sampl…

Unsupervised tissue classification of brain MR images for voxel-based morphometry analysis

2016

In this article, a fully unsupervised method for brain tissue segmentation of T1-weighted MRI 3D volumes is proposed. The method uses the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering algorithm and a Fully Connected Cascade Neural Network (FCCNN) classifier. Traditional manual segmentation methods require neuro-radiological expertise and significant time while semiautomatic methods depend on parameter's setup and trial-and-error methodologies that may lead to high intraoperator/interoperator variability. The proposed method selects the most useful MRI data according to FCM fuzziness values and trains the FCCNN to learn to classify brain’ tissues into White Matter, Gray Matter, and Cerebro-Spinal Fluid in …

GIORNALISMO E VETRINIZZAZIONE SOCIALE. LE DERIVE DELLA LOGICA SPETTACOLARE IN ITALIA

2014

The article focuses on the development of a television market model in Italian journalism in the last two decades, characterized by the success of the "entertainment" frame in both TV and print news. The use of a spectacular framing and commercialization of news has its roots in the American popular journalism of the 1800s, but is today connected to the more recent of a «Showcase» (or «display window») communication model. Each place is or can be a stage, and the traditional definition of news is revised: journalism does not present news objectively, but it offers dramatized reconstructions of parts of reality, focusing on the visual impact of the events and on the narrative strategy used t…

Viktorijas laika sociālās problēmas E. Gaskelas romānos

2017
