Investigation and control of a Norovirus outbreak of probable waterborne transmission through a municipal groundwater system

2014

During March 2011 an outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred in Santo Stefano di Quisquina, Agrigento, Sicily, Italy. Within two weeks 156 cases were identified among the 4,965 people living in the municipality. An epidemiological investigation was conducted to characterize the outbreak and target the control measures. A case was defined as a person developing diarrhea or vomiting during February 27–March 13, 2011. Stool specimens were collected from 12 cases. Norovirus (NoV) genotype GII.4 variant New Orleans 2009 was identified in stool samples from 11 of 12 cases tested (91.7%). Epidemiological investigations suggested a possible association with municipal drinking water consumption. Water …

Illicit drugs consumption evaluation by wastewater-based epidemiology in the urban area of Palermo city (Italy)

2017

Introduction. A wastewater-based epidemiology approach was performed to estimate the drug consumption in Palermo city, the fifth largest city of Italy with a population of 671 696 inhabitants, and to investigate the monthly variability of drug loads in wastewater from different areas of the city. A seven-months detection campaign was conducted at the two wastewater treatment plants of the city. Methods. Following a pre-treatment, 32 samples of wastewater were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Results. We estimated a mean cocaine use in Palermo of 0.19 g/day/1000 people, corresponding to 1.90 doses/1000 people and cannabinoids use of 2.85 g/day/1000 people, correspo…

Considerazioni e prospettive storico-giuridiche sul recente accordo Santa Sede - Italia in materia di riconoscimento dei titoli ecclesiastici.

2020

The study is concerned with analyzing from both a historical and a legal point of view the recognition of ecclesiastical academic titles in light of the agreements between the Holy See and Italy. More precisely, it deals with the process that, from art. 10, paragraph 2 of the “Villa Madama Agreements”, has led, thanks to the Lisbon Convention and the so-called “Bologna Process”, to the agreement of February 13, 2019.

Allium garganicum (Alliaceae), a new species from Apulia (SE Italy)

2009

Abstract A new endemic species of Allium, belonging to the A. stamineum Boiss. group, is described from the Mount Gargano (Apulia, SE Italy). This new taxon, named Allium garganicum, is the single representative of this group in the Italian flora, limited to a small population growing on the limestone rocks near the coast. Its relationships with allied taxa, A. stamineum Boiss. and A. guicciardii Heldr., are also discussed.

Hieracium barrelieri, a new hawkweed species from S Italy, with notes on Tenore’s Hieracium murorum var. barrelieri (Asteraceae)

2015

A new species from Montevergine in Campania, Hieracium barrelieri, is described in detail. It is closest to H. acanthodontoides of H. sect. Acanthodontoidea. H. murorum var. barrelieri, an obsolete taxon described by Tenore, is also discussed, as it was partly based on the same population.

How the EU regional policy can shape urban change in Southern Europe: learning from different planning processes in Palermo

2019

The article provides an interpretation of the role played by the EU regional policy in the process of urban change experienced in Palermo, the fifth Italian city by population and capital of one of the largest Europe’s less developed regions (Sicily). Through an analysis of various EU-funded planning initiatives implemented over the last two decades – from the Urban Community Initiative in the late nineties to the current Integrated Territorial Investments under the 2014–2020 urban agenda –, the work explores their effects from three main perspectives: urban regen- eration, local governance, and planning innovation.

Food for flight: pre-migratory dynamics of the Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni.

2014

Capsule The post-reproductive stage of Lesser Kestrel is crucial for migratory fuelling and survival. Aims To describe the summer pre-migratory ecology of the Lesser Kestrel in Sicily and review existing data in Southern Europe. Methods We identified the main summer roosts and then made roost counts every ten days from 2010 to 2012. We used case-sensitive modelling procedures to detect biases in counts (generalized linear mixed models), assess the annual population trends from 2005 to 2012 (TRends and Indices for Monitoring); and to model habitat preferences (generalized linear model). We sampled pellets to describe the birds’ diet during the peak month prior to migration. Results We discov…

HLA antigens in ulcerative colitis: a study in the Sicilian population

2008

HLA antigens were investigated in 41 Sicilian patients with ulcerative colitis and in 151 healthy controls. Frequencies of HLA-B5 and DR2 were increased in the group of patients with ulcerative colitis whereas the DR3 antigen frequency was decreased. However the corrected p values were not significant. Thus, present results indicate that in ulcerative colitis HLA linked genetic factors play a marginal role, if any.

Natural recruitment contributes to high densities of grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella (Valenciennes, 1844) in Western Europe

2015

Introductions of grass carp, well known for their potentially negative ecosystem effects, have been performed in several countries around the world. As the species was considered unable to reproduce naturally under non-native environmental conditions, little attention was initially given to its invasive potential. We studied an area in northern-Italy where, contrary to expectations, introductions that were performed in the early 80s still exert a considerable pressure on aquatic macrophytes. In order to reveal whether the observed population dynamics are the result of natural events or stocking we analysed the density, age- and size-structure of the grass carp population and the migration p…

"La più gran gioia è sempre all’altra riva" -On the Albanian migration in Italy (XIV-XVIII centuries)

2018

The essay reconstructs the various phases of Albanian emigration to Italy, delimiting the causes and the areas concerned in the double attempt to propose a typology of a phenomenon that developed over the long term and to dispel the mythological complex that has dominated and manipulated historiography arbëreshe.
