A M3G Talking Head for Smartphones

2011

Often customer information services or virtual support guides make use of friendly interface to facilitate human-machine interaction. Indeed, virtual guided tours or helpdesks use a talking anthropomorphic head to communicate with the user. In this paper, we present a talking head for Smart phones, PDAs and, in general, all the mobile devices able to support J2ME and MIDP protocol. The objective of this article is to illustrate how to make such an interface as portable as possible by maximizing the limited computational resources of these devices.

Returns to Schooling in Spain. How Reliable Are IV Estimates?

2001

This paper studies the Ordinary Least-Squared (OLS) and Instrumental Variables (IV) estimates of the returns to schooling for male workers in Spain. OLS estimates are often biased due to the endogeneity of schooling, measurement errors or omitted variables. Proper IV estimates correct this bias. The reliability of family background, natural experiments (based on changes in the education system and season of birth) and the availability of a college in the province is checked using Spanish data. The results suggest that background and college availability are valid instruments and that the IV estimates of the returns to schooling are higher than OLS estimates. These results are in line with t…

Mass transport problems obtained as limits of p-Laplacian type problems with spatial dependence

2014

Abstract. We consider the following problem: given a bounded convex domain Ω ⊂ ℝ N ${\Omega \subset \mathbb {R}^N}$ we consider the limit as p → ∞ of solutions to - div ( b p - p | D u | p - 2 D u ) = f + - f - ${- \operatorname{div} (b_{p}^{-p} |Du|^{p-2} Du)=f_+ - f_-}$ in Ω and b p - p | D u | p - 2 ∂ u ∂ η = 0 ${ b_{p}^{-p} |Du|^{p-2} \frac{\partial u}{\partial \eta }=0}$ on ∂ Ω ${\partial \Omega }$ . Under appropriate assumptions on the coefficients bp that in particular verify that lim p → ∞ b p = b ${ \lim _{p\rightarrow \infty } b_p = b }$ uniformly in Ω ¯ ${\overline{\Omega }}$ , we prove that there is a uniform limit of u p j ${u_{p_j}}$ (along a sequence p j → ∞ ${p_j \rightarrow…

New examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds and genus zero surfaces

2012

We classify the subgroups of the automorphism group of the product of 4 projective lines admitting an invariant anticanonical smooth divisor on which the action is free. As a first application, we describe new examples of Calabi-Yau 3-folds with small Hodge numbers. In particular, the Picard number is 1 and the number of moduli is 5. Furthermore, the fundamental group is non-trivial. We also construct a new family of minimal surfaces of general type with geometric genus zero, K^2=3 and fundamental group of order 16. We show that this family dominates an irreducible component of dimension 4 of the moduli space of the surfaces of general type.

Calder\'on's problem for p-Laplace type equations

2016

We investigate a generalization of Calder\'on's problem of recovering the conductivity coefficient in a conductivity equation from boundary measurements. As a model equation we consider the p-conductivity equation with p strictly between one and infinity, which reduces to the standard conductivity equation when p equals two, and to the p-Laplace equation when the conductivity is constant. The thesis consists of results on the direct problem, boundary determination and detecting inclusions. We formulate the equation as a variational problem also when the conductivity may be zero or infinity in large sets. As a boundary determination result we recover the first order derivative of a smooth co…

Linearized Calder\'on problem and exponentially accurate quasimodes for analytic manifolds

2020

In this article we study the linearized anisotropic Calder\'on problem on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. This problem amounts to showing that products of pairs of harmonic functions of the manifold form a complete set. We assume that the manifold is transversally anisotropic and that the transversal manifold is real analytic and satisfies a geometric condition related to the geometry of pairs of intersecting geodesics. In this case, we solve the linearized anisotropic Calder\'on problem. The geometric condition does not involve the injectivity of the geodesic X-ray transform. Crucial ingredients in the proof of our result are the construction of Gaussian beam quasimodes on the…

Determining an unbounded potential for an elliptic equation with a power type nonlinearity

2022

In this article we focus on inverse problems for a semilinear elliptic equation. We show that a potential $q$ in $L^{n/2+\varepsilon}$, $\varepsilon>0$, can be determined from the full and partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. This extends the results from [M. Lassas, T. Liimatainen, Y.-H. Lin, and M. Salo, Partial data inverse problems and simultaneous recovery of boundary and coefficients for semilinear elliptic equations, Rev. Mat. Iberoam. (2021)] where this is shown for H\"older continuous potentials. Also we show that when the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is restricted to one point on the boundary, it is possible to determine a potential $q$ in $L^{n+\varepsilon}$. The authors of arXiv:2202.0…

Inverse problems for elliptic equations with fractional power type nonlinearities

2020

We study inverse problems for semilinear elliptic equations with fractional power type nonlinearities. Our arguments are based on the higher order linearization method, which helps us to solve inverse problems for certain nonlinear equations in cases where the solution for a corresponding linear equation is not known. By using a fractional order adaptation of this method, we show that the results of [LLLS20a, LLLS20b] remain valid for general power type nonlinearities.

An index formula on manifolds with fibered cusp ends

2002

We consider a compact manifold whose boundary is a locally trivial fiber bundle and an associated pseudodifferential algebra that models fibered cusps at infinity. Using trace-like functionals that generate the 0-dimensional Hochschild cohomology groups, we express the index of a fully elliptic fibered cusp operator as the sum of a local contribution from the interior and a term that comes from the boundary. This answers the index problem formulated by Mazzeo and Melrose. We give a more precise answer in the case where the base of the boundary fiber bundle is the circle. In particular, for Dirac operators associated to a "product fibered cusp metric", the index is given by the integral of t…
