Youth Political Talk in the Changing Media Environment : A Cross-National Typology

2021

While political communication scholarship has long underscored the importance of political talk—casual conversations about news and politics that occur in everyday situations—as a way for citizens to clarify their opinions and as a precursor for political engagement, much of this literature tends to depict political talk as uncomfortable and difficult for citizens. Yet, this focus on the challenging aspects of political talk has been informed predominantly by the US context. To what extent may a different picture emerge when looking across different cultural contexts? And how are these dynamics shaped by the affordances of the multi-platform social media environment? This paper explores th…

De-demonising Japan? : Transitioning from war to peace through Japan’s cinematic post-war cultural diplomacy in UNESCO’s Orient project 1957–1959

2017

In 1959, UNESCO published a film catalogue titled Orient. A Survey of Films Produced in Countries of Arab and Asian Culture to familiarise Western audiences with Eastern cultures. Out of the 139 feature films included in the catalogue, 37 were Japanese. Through a discussion of the descriptions of the films provided in the catalogue, this article analyses Japan’s post-war cultural diplomacy in the context of the Orient project. The aim is to discuss the question of what purpose the Japanese films chosen for the Orient catalogue served in terms of cultural diplomacy. The analysis suggests the Japanese representatives aimed to position the nation in the international arena outside the Cold War…

PSMA6 (rs2277460, rs1048990), PSMC6 (rs2295826, rs2295827) and PSMA3 (rs2348071) genetic diversity in Latvians, Lithuanians and Taiwanese

2014

PSMA6 (rs2277460, rs1048990), PSMC6 (rs2295826, rs2295827) and PSMA3 (rs2348071) genetic diversity was investigated in 1438 unrelated subjects from Latvia, Lithuania and Taiwan. In general, polymorphism of each individual locus showed tendencies similar to determined previously in HapMap populations. Main differences concern Taiwanese and include presence of rs2277460 rare allele A not found before in Asians and absence of rs2295827 rare alleles homozygotes TT observed in all other human populations. Observed patterns of SNPs and haplotype diversity were compatible with expectation of neutral model of evolution. Linkage disequilibrium between the rs2295826 and rs2295827 was detected to be c…

The heterogeneity of new entrants and the selectivity of higher education institutions : some results using data from the CHEERS project

2002

02079; International audience; This paper attempts to test whether there stillexist differences in selectivity between highereducation institutions. Data from the CHEERS(Careers after Higher Education: a EuropeanResearch Survey) project enables us to describethe differences in institutional selectivity ineach country across different fields. We askthe question: how selective are institutionstoday, particularly in the case of Europe andJapan?. In order to describe the selectivity ofhigher education institutions for each field ineach country, we use the entry grade given byeach graduate in the CHEERS data. Despite thedifferences in the grading references in thedifferent countries, these data …

A Viable System View of the Japanese Lean Production System

2011

We highlight the main characteristics of lean production and we analyze them using a viable-systemic perspective. Doing so we consider the lean production with its osmotic interactions with the Japanese business system and we create a framework which highlights the key relations which are essential for the viability of the system.

Italian red wine in the Japanese market: a hedonic price analysis

2017

This study applies the hedonic pricing model to examine important objective attributes appearing on the label of Italian wines influencing average customer wine prices in Japan. Data on 829 red Italian wines sold in the Japanese market were collected through the wine searcher dataset, and the information included on the wine labels, useful for assisting in the selection and appreciation of wines, has been included. A log-linear model was esteemed and the proposed hedonic equation accounted for 43.5% of the variation in wine prices. The results indicate that international grape varieties, alcohol content and the year of production explain most of the price difference. On the other hand, the …

Analysis of the 2011 Japan's triple disaster from a conceptual ontology of the domain of risk and disaster,

2012

International audience; In this paper, we propose to use the factual part of a conceptual ontology realized in 2009 (Provitolo and al. 2009 a) to analyze the disaster that occurred in Japan on 11 March 2011 and which was characterized by a sequence of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident. Many papers, reports, videos and press articles were published, each one providing a wide variety of information. Some fo- cused on the massive earthquake that triggered the devastating tsunami waves along the eastern coast of the Tohoku region while others mainly analyzed the nuclear crisis. The aim of this work is to syn- thesize in visual form information from various sources and to produce differen…

Blessures et sentiments : les poèmes de Sinéad Morrissey

2018

This paper explores the poetry of Sinéad Morrissey (born in Portadown, Northern Ireland, in 1972), one of the most highly regarded of the younger generation of contemporary Irish poets. Taking into account her six collections to date – including There Was Fire in Vancouver (1996), The State of the Prisons (2005), Parallax (2013) and On Balance published in 2017, it examines the great variety of poetical strategies – analogy, metaphor, polysemy, play on form and perspective, pictorialism and iconicity, ekphrasis, etc. – that Morrissey uses to tell of most personal experiences (physical pain, exile, loss, pregnancy and motherhood, confrontation with forms of otherness, states of imprisonment,…
