Do horizontal relationships matter to production and operations managers?
2014
This paper shifts the focus of production, operations and supply chain management business relationships from the vertical to the horizontal side and calls for more research on this issue. The main intent is to provide managerially oriented arguments regarding the linkages between the achievement of operations-related goals and decisions related to horizontal business relationships. Specifically, we address the following research question: Does a linkage exist between production and operations objectives and the decisions a company makes about horizontal agreements, particularly horizontal governance mode choice? To answer this research question, we develop literature-based hypotheses and c…
Results of isolated posterolateral corner reconstruction
2010
Abstract Background Isolated posterolateral corner (PLC) tears are relatively rare events. Various surgical techniques to treat posterolateral knee instability have been described; because surgical results are linked to cruciate reconstructions it has been difficult to date to define whether one surgical procedure has better prognosis than another. The goal of this study is to determine the clinical outcome of PLC reconstruction following fibular-based technique. Materials and methods We retrospectively evaluated a case series of patients who received isolated PLC reconstruction between March 2005 and January 2007. Ten patients were surgically treated for isolated injuries and were availabl…
The role of the styloid apophysis of the temporal bone in the biomechanics of the tongue, mandible, hyoid system: A case study
2020
Temporomandibular disorders are characterized by ear pain, tinnitus, difficulty in chewing, dysphagia and also dizziness, cervical limitation of range of movement (ROM) and other less common disorders. Numerous recent studies associate the presence of these signs and symptoms with an elongated styloid apophysis, as in the case of Eagle syndrome. The purpose of this clinical case is to support the thesis of a common syndrome that temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders with an elongated styloid process affirming the relationship between temporal bone, mandibule, hyoid bone and tongue. The patient was a 57-year-old woman who reported having ear algia and tinnitus all on the right side with di…
Subharmonic variation of the leafwise Poincar metric
2003
Let X be a compact complex algebraic surface and let F be a holomorphic foliation, possibly with singularities, on X. On each leaf of F we put its Poincare metric (this will be defined below in more precise terms). We thus obtain a (singular) hermitian metric on the tangent bundle TF of F , and dually a (singular) hermitian metric on the canonical bundle KF = T ∗ F of F . The main aim of this paper is to prove that this metric on KF has positive curvature, in the sense of currents. Of course, the positivity of the curvature in the leaf direction is an immediate consequence of the definitions; the nontrivial fact is that the curvature is positive also in the directions transverse to the leaf…
The use of tricyclic antidepressants in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders: systematic review of the literature of the last 20 years
2009
Many therapies have been proposed for the management of temporomandibular disorders, including the use of different drugs. However, lack of knowledge about the mechanisms behind the pain associated with this pathology, and the fact that the studies carried out so far use highly disparate patient selection criteria, mean that results on the effectiveness of the different medications are inconclusive. This study makes a systematic review of the literature published on the use of tricyclic antidepressants for the treatment of temporomandibular disorders, using the SORT criteria (Strength of recommendation taxonomy) to consider the level of scientific evidence of the different studies. Followin…

Noncooperative dynamic games for inventory applications: A consensus approach
2008
We focus on a finite horizon noncooperative dynamic game where the stage cost of a single player associated to a decision is a monotonically nonincreasing function of the total number of players making the same decision. For the single-stage version of the game, we characterize Nash equilibria and derive a consensus protocol that makes the players converge to the unique Pareto optimal Nash equilibrium. Such an equilibrium guarantees the interests of the players and is also social optimal in the set of Nash equilibria. For the multi-stage version of the game, we present an algorithm that converges to Nash equilibria, unfortunately not necessarily Pareto optimal. The algorithm returns a seque…
Introduction to Price Bundling
1999
Collecting goods or services in a package and selling them at a (discounted) package price has become a widespread sales practice in many production or service oriented industries. The methodology itself is called Price Bundling and can be classified as a price differentiation tool for the price management of multiproduct/service enterprises.
