Entropy, transverse entropy and partitions of unity

1994

AbstractThe topological entropy of a transformation is expressed in terms of partitions of unity. The transverse entropy of a flow tangential to a foliation is defined and expresed in a similar way. The geometric entropy of a foliation of a Riemannian manifold is compared with the transverse entropy of its geodesic flow.

Games without repetitions on graphs with vertex disjoint cycles

1997

Games without repetitions on graphs with vertex disjoint cycles are considered. We show that the problem finding of the game partition in this class reduces to this problem for trees. A method of finding of the game partition for trees have been given in [2].

Infant Manipulative Actions upon Customary and Uncustomary Objects in Independent and Joint Activity

1999

Eight 12 month‐olds acting on objects were observed in two sessions: 1) the objects were home objects; 2) they were brought by the observer as new exemplars of previous toys. Infants were observed manipulating objects independently and with their mothers. Type and cognitive level of infant's actions were coded. Conventional actions were more frequent in joint than independent activity. In independent activity, conventional actions were more frequent with customary objects. High cognitive level was more frequent with customary objects. Acting with an adult is the major influential factor in promoting conventional usage of an object. However, acting on customary objects influences both conven…

Institutional Path Dependence in Competitive Dynamics: The Case of Paper Industries in Finland and the USA

2016

Prior research on competitive dynamics has failed to offer tools to understand distorted patterns of competition that emerge from distinct institutional and historical contexts. Our analysis suggests that a joint effect of institutional rules, governance structures, and shared cognition plays a pivotal role in firm-level competitive behavior and capability development. We show how globally significant market positions can result from specific institutional arrangements between firms and governments, especially if coupled with interfirm contractual commitments. Our results call for more attention to these interfirm commitments that are built on formal rules and governmental support, but whos…

A Fiber Optic Strain Gage Sensor for Measuring Preload in Thick Composite Bolted Joints

2019

Mechanical fastening is a popular choice in joining composites because of the ability to transfer high loads and the ease of assembly and disassembly. In this study, the failure behavior of composite–aluminum single lap bolted joint is investigated. In particular, the effects of varying the preload on the bolt are examined. In order to accurately measure the preload, a specialized sensor that uses a fiber Bragg grating sensor embedded in the bolt is proposed and created. This sensor is realized for the current tests but can be expanded to other applications. An experimental study of bolted single-lap joints varying the tightening torque value has been carried out and, in order to validate t…

The effect of through-thickness compressive stress on mode II interlaminar fracture toughness

2017

Abstract The effect of through-thickness compressive stress on mode II interlaminar fracture toughness is investigated experimentally and replicated numerically. The modified Transverse Crack Tensile specimen recently proposed by the authors is used, together with an experimental device designed to apply a constant transverse compressive stress on the surface of the specimen. Experiments are conducted using IM7/8552 specimens for different compressive stresses, ranging from 0 to 100 MPa, covering all the practical applications commonly encountered in the aeronautical industry (e.g., tightened filled holes or bolted joints). It is shown that mode II interlaminar fracture toughness increases …

Constructive Optimization of Vulcanization Installations in Order to Improve the Performance of Conveyor Belts

2019

Conveyor belts of special importance must have superior mechanical characteristics. The joining by vulcanization of the conveyor belts allows to obtain superior performances, but it has been found that at the vulcanizing joint of the conveyor belts, there is a &ldquo

Group Nonnegative Matrix Factorization with Sparse Regularization in Multi-set Data

2021

Constrained joint analysis of data from multiple sources has received widespread attention for that it allows us to explore potential connections and extract meaningful hidden components. In this paper, we formulate a flexible joint source separation model termed as group nonnegative matrix factorization with sparse regularization (GNMF-SR), which aims to jointly analyze the partially coupled multi-set data. In the GNMF-SR model, common and individual patterns of particular underlying factors can be extracted simultaneously with imposing nonnegative constraint and sparse penalty. Alternating optimization and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) are combined to solve the GNMF-S…

(Approximate) Low-Mode Averaging with a new Multigrid Eigensolver

2015

We present a multigrid based eigensolver for computing low-modes of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator. For the non-Hermitian case multigrid methods have already replaced conventional Krylov subspace solvers in many lattice QCD computations. Since the $\gamma_5$-preserving aggregation based interpolation used in our multigrid method is valid for both, the Hermitian and the non-Hermitian case, inversions of very ill-conditioned shifted systems with the Hermitian operator become feasible. This enables the use of multigrid within shift-and-invert type eigensolvers. We show numerical results from our MPI-C implementation of a Rayleigh quotient iteration with multigrid. For state-of-the-art lat…

Improved Statistically Based Retrievals via Spatial-Spectral Data Compression for IASI Data

2019

In this paper, we analyze the effect of spatial and spectral compression on the performance of statistically based retrieval. Although the quality of the information is not com- pletely preserved during the coding process, experiments reveal that a certain amount of compression may yield a positive impact on the accuracy of retrievals. We unveil two strategies, both with interesting benefits: either to apply a very high compression, which still maintains the same retrieval performance as that obtained for uncompressed data; or to apply a moderate to high compression, which improves the performance. As a second contribution of this paper, we focus on the origins of these benefits. On the one…
