The main aim of this paper is to consider from different points of view the thesis of a conservative character of Peirce’s thought. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, arguments for Peirce’s conservatism are presented. They are of two kinds: inner ones (Peirce’s own declarations) and outer ones (a comparison of Peirce’s view o the views of two other classical pragmatists: James and Dewey). Tutkimuksen tehtävänä on tarkastella Yhdysvaltain ulkoministeri James F. Byrnesin Stuttgartissa syyskuussa 1946 pitämää puhetta illokutionäärisen uudelleentulkinnan keinoin. Tavoitteena ei ole niinkään puhetekstin tuottamien empiiristen seurausten (perlokuutioiden), vaan niiden aiheuttamien tekojen sisällön (illokuutioiden) analyysi. From 1338 onwards, the inhabitants of late-medieval Valencia celebrated a feast every 9 October commemorating the entrance into the city of King James I’s forces on that day in 1238. It has been argued that this was essentially a spiritual display from its establishment in 1338 until the beginning of the fifteenth century. The present study delves deeper into the religious and political aims of the feast from its origins, framing the celebration within a broader Mediterranean context. The article shows how the classical political thinking, based on civic virtues, and modernist thinking, based on individualism and self-interest, formed the basis of the U.S. Constitution. The Founding Fathers did not realize the full extent of the rift between classicism and modernity.
