The Holocaust, the Founding of Israel and the Arab-Israeli War in the British, Swedish and Finnish Press

2011

The fact that the gap between the founding of the state of Israel and the end of the Holocaust was only three years (almost to date), creates, at least in retrospect, a strong link between the two events. Articulating this view, Walter Harrelson has written that ‘[A] shamed world was certainly ready, after the Holocaust and the struggle of Jews from Europe to get to Israel, to support the Partition Plan that led to the establishment of the state.’1 Yehuda Bauer has argued that the birth of a nation ‘bridges the gap between an unconquered past tragedy and the hope for the resurrection of an almost mortally wounded people’.2 Peter Novick also agrees that the link exists, although in less cert…

The Jewish doctors involved in the development of health resorts in eastern Galicia at the late 19th and early 20th century (Central and Eastern Euro…

2018

Summary Background The involvement of Jewish doctors and scientists in the development of health resorts in eastern Galicia (part of the Austrian monarchy after 1772, and since 1918 as part of independent Poland, now part of Ukraine) is unquestionable; however, awareness of this fact is not that common. Meanwhile, also due to their work and activity, small borderland resorts became important medical, cultural and social centers of the region. The involvement of Jewish doctors in the development of Galician health resorts resulted from, among others, the rich and multi-layered tradition and integration of Judaism with the hygiene regulations and moral principles of the religion. The eastern …

Istota judaizmu według Leo Baecka

2016

Tekst jest próbą analizy kilku publikacji Leo Baecka (1873–1956), niemieckiego rabina, myśliciela religijnego, lidera progresywnego judaizmu, m.in. rabina Gminy Żydowskiej w Opolu (1897–1907), gdzie w 1905 r. opublikował kluczową pracę Istota Judaizmu (Das Wesen des Judentums).

Redescribing the Nation : Anti-Semitism as a tool of nation-building in the Hungarian Numerus Clausus debates, 1920-1928

2018

Abstract Boosting national spirit through projection of otherness is not a new phenomenon, at least in authoritarian regimes. Yet the role of anti-Semitism in the Numerus Clausus debates in the Hungarian parliament in 1920 and 1928 is worth deeper analysis, as it bore a peculiar role in the Hungarian interwar counterrevolutionary nation-building. The Numerus Clausus law of 1920 set ethnic quotas to university enrolment; the explicit argument for this was countering the Jewish ‘over-representation’ in Hungarian society. However, in 1928 the law was amended, abolishing (in principle) the said quotas; this time the arguments favoured national consolidation, where segregation was to be moderate…

Aristóteles, los sabios judíos y Salomón en una colección de sentencias inédita, Palabras breves: dichos de sabios

2008

This article presents an edition of an unpublished collection of sayings, of Jewish origin, to be found in Manuscript 5644 of the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid, on folios 78 V (lxxx v ) to 84 V (lxxxvi v ). The contents are to be found in the Libro de los buenos proverbios (translated from Arabic into Spanish and Hebrew in the 13th century); in the Pirque Abot , the only wisdom tractate in the Mishnah ; and in the Proverbs of Solomon, part of the Tanakh , i.e. the Hebrew bible. The compilation of the work involved selecting and reorganising materials from various sources, following the editor’s tastes and interests, and giving rise to a new literary product which is a perfect example of the…

Job o el sufrimiento del justo

2020

ABSTRACT: The question about the meaning of the suffering of the innocent is inescapable. In the biblical tradition, this subject is treated in a particularly profound way in the book of Job. Paradoxically, this book is little known. This article describes the elements that articulate this book according to its complex structure and its poetic peculiarity. That understanding helps to explain the various interpretations and re-readings that this work experienced in Judaism of the pre-Christian period, in the origin of Christianity and in later Rabbinism. Since the central theme is always current, this work helps readers to better read this biblical book and makes them understand its importan…
