Bioethics and neuroethics
2019
Neuroethics officially appeared at the start of the 21st century due to the progress made by the neurosciences, as an applied ethics related to bioethics, but also as an independent discipline in its own right. As an applied ethics, it tackles issues bordering on bioethics. As independent neuroethics, it deals with established philosophical problems from a neuroscientific standpoint in the broader sense. It involves two central questions: the design of a framework in which to select, interpret and integrate data from neuroscience on morality and outlining the appropriate method or methods for this new branch of knowledge. In both cases, most neuroethicists curiously claim to take a naturali…
Internal and external mapping of preferences for commercial lager beers : comparison of hedonic ratings by consumers blind versus with knowledge of b…
2001
Abstract The individual preferences of 170 consumers in six categories of age (20s, 30s, 40s) and gender (men, women) for 24 domestic, imported or specialty lager beers, tasted first blind and then with knowledge of brand and price, were investigated by preference mapping techniques. Internal preference mapping revealed differences in the preferences of consumers, with some consumers preferring domestic or ice beers, and others preferring specialty or imported beers. Hedonic ratings changed significantly from the blind to the informed tasting condition, particularly for consumers in their twenties, thereby documenting the significant role of non-sensory variables in the formulation of a hed…
'I love Rock 'n' Roll'--music genre preference modulates brain responses to music.
2013
The present study examined the effect of participants' music genre preference on the neural processes underlying evaluative and cognitive judgements of music using the event-related potential technique. To this aim, two participant groups differing in their preference for Latin American and Heavy Metal music performed a liking judgement and a genre classification task on a variety of excerpts of either music genre. A late positive potential (LPP) was elicited in all conditions between 600 and 900 ms after stimulus onset. During the genre classification task, an early negativity was elicited by the preferred compared to the non-preferred music at around 230-370 ms whereas the non-preferred g…
Famous face recognition and naming test: a normative study.
2003
Tests of famous face recognition and naming, and tasks assessing semantic knowledge about famous people after presentation either of their faces or their names are often used in the neuropsychological examination of aphasic, amnesic and demented patients. A total of 187 normal subjects took part in this study. The aim was to collect normative data for a newly devised test including five subtests: famous face naming, fame judgement after face presentation and after name presentation, semantic knowledge about famous people after face presentation and after name presentation. Norms were calculated taking into account demographic variables such as age, sex and education and adjusted scores were…

Three dimensional reliability analyses of currently used methods for assessment of sagittal jaw discrepancy
2018
Background The objective of this study was to analyse three dimensionally the reliability and correlation of angular and linear measurements in assessment of anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy. Material and Methods In this retrospective cross sectional study, a sample of 213 subjects were three-dimensionally analysed from cone-beam computed tomography scans. The sample was divided according to three dimensional measurement of anteroposterior relation (ANB angle) into three groups (skeletal Class I, Class II and Class III). The anterior-posterior cephalometric indicators were measured on volumetric images using Anatomage software (InVivo5.2). These measurements included three angular and s…
How neurophysiological measures can be used to enhance the evaluation of remote tower solutions
2019
New solutions in operational environments are often, among objective measurements, evaluated by using subjective assessment and judgment from experts. Anyhow, it has been demonstrated that subjective measures suffer from poor resolution due to a high intra and inter-operator variability. Also, performance measures, if available, could provide just partial information, since an operator could achieve the same performance but experiencing a different workload. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate: (i) the higher resolution of neurophysiological measures in comparison to subjective ones; and (ii) how the simultaneous employment of neurophysiological measures and behavioral ones could allow a…
2014
The paper analyses the judgment of the International Court of Justice of November 11, 2013, in which the Court establishes several factors relevant for the interpretation of its judgments. After illustrating the importance of this judgement, the paper criticizes the Court's refrain from any examination of subsequent practice of the Parties in the application of its judgments, as a means of interpretation.
