The influence of extra load on the mechanical behavior of skeletal muscle

Eleven international jumpers and throwers engaged in year round training were divided into experimental (n = 6) and control (n = 5) groups. The experimental group was tested before and after a 3 weeks simulated hypergravity period, and again 4 weeks after the hypergravity period. The high gravity condition was created by wearing a vest weighing about 13% of the subjects body weight. The vest was worn from morning to evening including the training sessions, and only removed during sleep. The daily training of all subjects consisted of classical weight training and jumping drills. Serum hormone and myocellular protein recovery after intermittent runs at the velocity associated with VO(2max).

The responses of serum myocellular proteins and hormones to exercise were studied in ten well-trained middle-distance runners [maximal oxygen consumption (VO(2max)) = 69.4 (5.1) ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)] during 3 recovery days and compared to various measures of physical performance. The purpose was to establish the duration of recovery from typical intermittent middle-distance running exercises. Adaptive response of human skeletal muscle to simulated hypergravity condition

The mechanical behaviour of leg extensor muscles of five international-level athletes was evaluated during 13 months training period. Drop jumps, average mechanical power during 15 S continuous jump, and vertical jumps performed with and without extra weights were used to measure explosive power characteristics. The data recorded in vertical jumps was utilized for construction of force-velocity relationship (F-V curve). Neuromuscular Differences Between Endurance-Trained, Power-Trained, and Sedentary Subjects

This study tested the hypothesis that neuromuscular characteristics of plantar flexor (PF) and knee extensor (KE) muscles explain differences of both performance in vertical jump and maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) between endurance-trained (END, n = 9), power-trained (POW, n = 8), and sedentary subjects (SED, n = 8). Evoked twitch characteristics of PF and KE were measured. MVC, maximal voluntary activation (%VA) of KE, and performance in vertical jump were also measured. The study examined the acute neuromuscular and metabolic responses and recovery (24 and 48 h) to combined strength and endurance sessions (SEs). Recreationally endurance trained men (n = 12) and women (n = 10) performed: endurance running followed immediately by a strength loading (combined endurance and strength session (ES)) and the reverse order (SE). Maximal strength (MVC), countermovement jump height (CMJ), and creatine kinase activity were measured pre-, mid-, post-loading and at 24 and 48 h of recovery. Neuromuscular Behaviour of the Triceps Surae Muscle-Tendon Complex during Running and Jumping

The present study examined the behaviour of the Achilles tendon (AT) - triceps surae (TS) muscle complex during running and long jump take-off. High AT forces were measured in the push-off phase in running even with very low EMG activity. In the long jump, high rate of stiffness development was a characteristic of the braking phase of the jump. Leg stiffness modulation during exhaustive stretch-shortening cycle exercise.

The present study examined the effects of muscle activity modulation on leg stiffness during an exhaustive stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) exercise in eight male subjects. Reaction force, electromyography (EMG) of the soleus (Sol), gastrocnemius (Ga) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles and sledge seat position were recorded during the SSC exercise, consisting of 100 maximal intermittent drop jumps followed by a continuous submaximal jumping until exhaustion, on a sledge apparatus. Metabolic loading was determined by measuring blood lactate (La). The present study investigated the influence of a 5-week electrostimulation (EMS) training program on muscular strength, kicking velocity, sprint, and vertical jump performance in soccer players.
