Less is More! Preliminary Evaluation of Multi-Functional Document-Based Online Learning Environment

2019

This work-in-progress paper in innovative practice category presents and evaluates a multi-functional document-based learning management system, TIM (The Interactive Material). This system is developed with the goal of integrating a rich set of features seamlessly into teachers’ every-day pedagogical and disciplinary needs. The aim is that a single system (“Less”) would provide all technological solutions necessary for online teaching and learning (“More”), hence the punchline “Less is More!” We illustrate the system and evaluate it based on feedback from teachers. This preliminary evaluation focuses on how teachers reacted to the multi-functional system and is discussed in the context of T…

The Shape of Interoperability: Reviewing and Characterizing a Central Area within eGovernment Research

2012

Interoperability has been discussed and studied for more than a decade. While early discussions were very conceptual, interoperability is increasingly seen as one of the key enablers of the promised benefits from eGovernment. Consequently, and not surprisingly, a considerable amount of research has been published related to interoperability. However, a conceptual model of the interoperability domain is currently missing. We thus propose such a model based on an extensive review of a subset of the eGovernment literature published in highly ranked information systems, public administration and eGovernment journals. The model outlines and discusses actors, activities, contextual factors, effec…

Determinants to the Use of Business Process Modeling

2010

This article addresses a theoretical gap in the BPM literature on factors that influence the acceptance of process modeling (PM) in organizations. Literature review on PM and 34 qualitative interviews were combined into a PM acceptance model and empirically tested with data from 74 companies showing that PM is to a large extent a mandated activity, explaining the missing link between PM attitudes on PM intention. The study extends the TAM and the TPB to the context of process modeling and demonstrates that less studied socio-political factors in addition to awareness of PM are important to understand PM acceptance. The findings show that social influence from different stakeholder reference…

Organizational Learning Capability and Job Satisfaction: an Empirical Assessment in the Ceramic Tile Industry

2009

Organizational learning capability has been considered an essential issue of an organization's effectiveness and potential to innovate and grow. Although its positive effects on organizations and employees are generally assumed, there is no empirical evidence of its positive association with employee attitudes such as job satisfaction. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between organizational learning capability and job satisfaction through the questionnaire responses of 157 employees from eight companies in the Spanish ceramic tile industry. Results suggest that organizational learning capability and job satisfaction are strongly linked.

An OLPC Workshop in Rural Tanzania: Preliminary Results

2013

One-to-one computing is an active and widely researched topic in educational technology. Its benefits include, for instance, easily up datable material base, anywhere-anytime learning, adaptability, and simulated experiments in science. The use of one-to-one computing in a developing country context has recently become an active research topic. However, the materialization of the educational benefits requires proper contextualization regarding the necessary pedagogical, organizational, institutional, and other types of adaptation. This paper presents preliminary results from an action research study in a primary school in rural Tanzania. In that study, the utilization of one-to-one computin…

Encouraging blended learning and ICT use at Universitat de València to improve the learning process with the .LRN platform

2007

The Universitat de Valencia, one of the largest, oldest and most varied in Spain, concerned about the efficiency of the learning processes in the context of the convergence process towards the Higher Education European Space, has conducted educative innovation experiences in several degrees, diversifying learning activities.Interested in enhancing traditional classroom learning by use of ICT (with progressive blended learning introduction) has established a learning management system to enhance the learning and communication processes for the whole university. The overall goal was to build skills in ICT use in order to improve learning process quality and student participation. This paper de…

Supporting Learning Groups in Online Learning Environment

2015

In this paper, we report on the initial findings on how to effectively support learning groups in online learning environments. Based on the idea that learning groups can enhance effective learning in online learning environments, we used qualitative research methods to study learning groups (interviews and observation of learning group interactions in online learning environments) and their facilitators. Preliminary results reveal that in order to have effective learning groups you need to take care of the following online design issues: develop comprehensive study guides, train online tutors, motivate learners through feedback, and foster high cognitive levels of interaction through quest…

Collaborative business planning in initial vocational education and training

2015

There is a growing demand to enhance entrepreneurship. This study aims at producing knowledge that can assist teachers in designing and supporting collaborative learning of entrepreneurship in vocational education. A qualitative case study approach was adopted. The outcome of this study provides a better understanding of the factors that hinder and enable collaboration, as related to entrepreneurship education in initial vocational education and training. In practice, nine dimensions of descriptive factors that hindered the exercise and nine distinct descriptive factors that acted as enablers were identified. This study suggests that, although the script of the learning task creates the set…

Designing and evaluating collaboration in a virtual game environment for vocational learning

2008

Especially in vocational education, attention should be paid not only to the use of new technological solutions but also to collaborative learning and cooperative working methods in order to develop students' skills for their future jobs. This study involves a design experiment including the design process of a new game environment, description of the script developed for this game, as well as the empirical study with multiple data collection methods, data analysis, results and conclusions for further work. The aim of the study was twofold. Firstly, we aimed to develop a game environment to simulate the work context of a vocational design process, and secondly, to investigate how effective …
