A knowledge-based decision support system in bioinformatics: An application to protein complex extraction

2013

Abstract Background We introduce a Knowledge-based Decision Support System (KDSS) in order to face the Protein Complex Extraction issue. Using a Knowledge Base (KB) coding the expertise about the proposed scenario, our KDSS is able to suggest both strategies and tools, according to the features of input dataset. Our system provides a navigable workflow for the current experiment and furthermore it offers support in the configuration and running of every processing component of that workflow. This last feature makes our system a crossover between classical DSS and Workflow Management Systems. Results We briefly present the KDSS' architecture and basic concepts used in the design of the knowl…

Feature extraction for classification in knowledge discovery systems

2003

Dimensionality reduction is a very important step in the data mining process. In this paper, we consider feature extraction for classification tasks as a technique to overcome problems occurring because of "the curse of dimensionality". We consider three different eigenvector-based feature extraction approaches for classification. The summary of obtained results concerning the accuracy of classification schemes is presented and the issue of search for the most appropriate feature extraction method for a given data set is considered. A decision support system to aid in the integration of the feature extraction and classification processes is proposed. The goals and requirements set for the d…

Probabilistic Logic under Coherence‚ Model−Theoretic Probabilistic Logic‚ and Default Reasoning in System P

2016

We study probabilistic logic under the viewpoint of the coherence principle of de Finetti. In detail, we explore how probabilistic reasoning under coherence is related to model-theoretic probabilistic reasoning and to default reasoning in System P. In particular, we show that the notions of g-coherence and of g-coherent entailment can be expressed by combining notions in model-theoretic probabilistic logic with concepts from default reasoning. Moreover, we show that probabilistic reasoning under coherence is a generalization of default reasoning in System P. That is, we provide a new probabilistic semantics for System P, which neither uses infinitesimal probabilities nor atomic bound (or bi…

Probabilistic Logic under Coherence, Model-Theoretic Probabilistic Logic, and Default Reasoning

2001

We study probabilistic logic under the viewpoint of the coherence principle of de Finetti. In detail, we explore the relationship between coherence-based and model-theoretic probabilistic logic. Interestingly, we show that the notions of g-coherence and of g-coherent entailment can be expressed by combining notions in model-theoretic probabilistic logic with concepts from default reasoning. Crucially, we even show that probabilistic reasoning under coherence is a probabilistic generalization of default reasoning in system P. That is, we provide a new probabilistic semantics for system P, which is neither based on infinitesimal probabilities nor on atomic-bound (or also big-stepped) probabil…

Imputato "assente" e indici di conoscenza del processo: una lettura virtuosa della Suprema Corte

2021

The Supreme Court, in a wide-ranging judgment, clarifies the meaning of the “knowledge indicators” codified in Article 420-bis, § 2, of the Italian Criminal procedure code. An interpretation “guaranteed-oriented” that prevents the risk of paving the way towards new European proceedings on the trial in absentia of the defendant.

Determining the Set of Concept Map Based Tasks for Computerized Knowledge Self-Assessment

2012

Demands for educated labor force with well-integrated cognitive structures call for necessity to use in educational institutions appropriate teaching and knowledge assessment methods directed towards fine development and assessment of students’ conceptual understanding. Concept maps as a kind of mental models have great potential in knowledge assessment due to several significant advantages. However, a taxonomy of possible concept mapping tasks has not been developed yet. The paper considers the problem of extending a set of concept mapping tasks in the already developed concept map based knowledge assessment system. The possible types of tasks are investigated from the point of view of the…

Heritage and knowledge: apparatus, logic and strategies in the formation of heritage

2016

Heritage as a category reflects diverse political positions. All heritagisation processes imply the creation of hierarchies, selection, ranking, and categorization of what is worthy or unworthy of being heritage, and all heritage creation involves certain disciplinary processes that confer legitimacy. As a modern invention, heritage was built on two closely-related cornerstones: the distinction between nature and culture and the difference between normalized knowledge and marginal knowledge. As a result, refining processes were applied which became strategies to legitimise political domination. In this paper the constituent process of heritage creation and its links to normative knowledge a…

Performance evaluation of robotic knowledge representation (PERK)

2012

In this paper, we explore some ways in which symbolic knowledge representations have been evaluated in the past and provide some thoughts on what should be considered when applying and evaluating these types of knowledge representations for real-time robotics applications. The emphasis of this paper is that the robotic applications require real-time access to information, which has not been one of the aspects measured in traditional symbolic representation evaluation approaches.

Ontological supports of knowledge: knowledge creation and analytical knowledge

2011

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine, from the perspective of different theoretical approaches, the relationship that exists between different ontological supports of knowledge and knowledge itself (the way it is created and its characteristics).Design/methodology/approachThe paper proposes two different types of knowledge (knowledge of concrete situations and abstract knowledge) and two approaches (the constructivist view and the cognitive view) and provides a general classification of the different knowledge types. Second, it examines the underlying ontological support‐knowledge creation, characteristics or types of knowledge relationship in different approaches. Finally, conclu…

Linking content and technology: on the geography of innovation networks in the Bergen media cluster

2017

This paper deals with the geography of innovation networks and analyses combinatorial knowledge dynamics from a single cluster perspective. Addressing firms in the media cluster in Bergen, Norway, we examine how and from where companies acquire and combine different types of knowledge for their innovation activities. The empirical analysis, which is based on structured interviews with 22 media companies, identifies two main types of cluster firms: media content providers that rely heavily on symbolic knowledge and media technology providers that draw mostly on synthetic knowledge. Even though they draw on different knowledge bases, the two types of firms are strongly interlinked in their in…
