Management Consulting Interventions in Architects' Practices

2015

International audience; This paper is based on intervention-research projects carried out in an 22 architects’practices with SEAM consulting methodology. The architectural Industry is a regulated profession whose field of intervention covers the work submitted to a building permit to set up the architectural project, but also involves more extended missions. Architecture is also an artistic profession. This request was based on the need for practices to reinforce their internal organization, improve customer service, increase economic performance and competitiveness, through developing the involvement and motivation of employees and architects.. Considering the economic importance and impac…

Understanding flow experience from users’ requirements

2015

This paper argues that the concept of flow can be useful in gaining a better understanding of information system users’ flow experience. This paper applies this concept in the requirements development phase of an Internet protocol television e-learning service development project. The findings show that flow experience can be visualised and measured, and that there are differences in how users see and perceive different features. Some features are driven by more experiential needs, whereas others are driven by more task-oriented goals. The findings indicate that the users’ perceived flow experiences can already be measured during the early phases of information systems IS development projec…

Learning and organizational change in SPI initiatives

2009

Explaining how organizations chance has been a central and enduring quest of management scholars and many other disciplines. In order to be successful change requires not only a new process or technology but also the engagement and participation of the people involved. In this vein the change process results in new behavior and is routinized in practical daily business life of the company. Change management provides a framework for managing the human side of these changes. In this article we present a literature review on the change management in the context of Software Process Improvement. The tra- ditional view of learning, as a “lessons learned” or post-mortem reporting activity is often…

Improvement of learning quality in manufacturing technology: a case study

2017

The paper presents the initial part of a study designed to understand the place of the present generation of engineering students in the global picture of their working life. The education represents an inestimable good that accompanies peoples through their existence. Higher education is the place were teenagers with different profiles modelled by their families, studies; experiences and so on come to meet, in most cases, the final education platform before employment. In light of this the higher education has the major role of prepare the students with the knowledge and skills appropriate to the labour market. That means with the knowledge and skills they need and their future employers a…

Engineering multi-agent systems: State of affairs and the road ahead

2019

International audience; The continuous integration of software-intensive systems together with the ever-increasing computing power offer a breeding ground for intelligent agents and multi-agent systems (MAS) more than ever before. Over the past two decades, a wide variety of languages, models, techniques and methodologies have been proposed to engineer agents and MAS. Despite this substantial body of knowledge and expertise, the systematic engineering of large-scale and open MAS still poses many challenges. Researchers and engineers still face fundamental questions regarding theories, architectures, languages, processes, and platforms for designing, implementing, running, maintaining, and e…

Towards a broader perspective on the forms of eco-industrial networks

2014

Abstract This paper explores various forms of eco-industrial networks in advancing environmental sustainability. Prior research on environmental sustainability primarily identifies industrial actors as autonomous entities or considers the role of networks in advancing environmental sustainability from a rather narrow perspective. However, the networks of ties in which industrial firms are embedded profoundly impacts not only their own performance, but also the natural environment in which they operate. Based on a systematic literature review, we identify four forms of eco-industrial networks that have the potential to advance environmental sustainability: 1) symbiosis networks, 2) sustainab…

The Performance Evaluation of Polytechnic Higher Education Institutions: Tensions and Reconfigurations Resulting from the Adoption of Specific Metrics

2017

Aligned with the binary structure of the higher education system in Portugal, divided into universities and polytechnics, the Government acknowledged, in 2014, the need to identify distinct performance indicators/metrics aiming at a more accurate assessment of the effect and quality of the action developed by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). For the Polytechnic Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) it was necessary to define «(...) performance indicators that address the production, transfer and diffusion of knowledge» (FCT, 2014: 1), aiming to measure «(...) the applied research and the cultural production activities as well as their impact on the region where they [PHEIs] are located…

Autonomy and ICT in Environmental Education

2012

[EN] This paper aims at tackling the need for appropriate knowledge when addressing Environmental Education (EE) from an autonomous and critical viewpoint. It also aims at showing the need for the appropriation of ICT with a view to foster the perception of the environmental complexity, as well as the construction of a new kind of environmental knowledge and awareness. These two factors should be capable of modifying the way human beings behave and relate to their environment. Before looking at effective ways to achieve this goal, a suitable praxis should be developed in such a way that a new environmental awareness emerges. This new praxis should in turn help foster the autonomy of both ed…

A force measuring based strategy for failure prevention in incremental forming

2006

Abstract Incremental forming processes show a number of advantages compared to the traditional processes but, at the same time, some drawbacks are clearly known. Current problems, include the slowness of the process, low accuracy and a lack of knowledge in the field of material formability. This paper is focused on the latter issue: an industrially oriented methodology for detecting the approach of failure in incremental forming is proposed. The approach is based on the analysis of the trend of the forming force in order to assess whether the process can be run safely. If not, a proper strategy, to avoid material failure, is proposed and experimentally validated.

Coordination policies to support decision making in distributed production planning

2003

Abstract Distributed production networks are considered organizational structures able to match agility and efficiency necessary to compete in the global market. Performances of such organization structures heavily depend on the ability of the network actors of coordinating their activities. The research proposes to model and design coordination problems within production network by using the Multiple Agent Technology. In particular, the paper proposes new strategies for coordinating production-planning activities within production networks. Such models have been developed and tested by using a proper simulation environment developed by using open source code and architecture. The results o…
