Tribological Aspects of In Situ Manipulation of Nanostructures Inside Scanning Electron Microscope

This chapter is dedicated to manipulation of nanostructures inside a scanning electron (SEM) microscope employed for real-time tribological measurements. Different approaches to force registration and calculation of static and kinetic friction are described. Application of the considered methodology to Au and Ag nanoparticles, as well as ZnO and CuO nanowires, is demonstrated. Advantages and limitations of the methodology in comparison to traditional AFM-based manipulation techniques are discussed.

This paper discusses uranium oxide crystal structure modifications that are observed during the low-temperature oxidation which transforms UO(2) into U(3)O(8). The symmetries and the structural parameters of UO(2), beta-U(4)O(9), beta-U(3)O(7), and U(3)O(8) were determined by refining neutron diffraction patterns on pure single-phase samples. Neutron diffraction patterns were also collected during the in situ oxidation of powder samples at 483 K. The lattice parameters and relative ratios of the four pure phases were measured during the progression of the isothermal oxidation. Kinetics of the lipoperoxyl radical-scavenging activity of indicaxanthin in solution and unilamellar liposomes

Abstract The reaction of the phytochemical indicaxanthin with lipoperoxyl radicals generated in methyl linoleate methanol solution by 2,20-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile), and in aqueous soybean phosphatidylcholine unilamellar liposomes by 2,20-azobis(2- amidinopropane)hydrochloride, was studied. The molecule acts as a chain-terminating lipoperoxyl radical scavenger in solution, with a calculated inhibition constant of 3.63 £ 105M21 s21, and a stoichiometric factor approaching 2. Abstract A comparative study on the reactivity of five indole derivatives (tryptamine, N-acetyltryptamine, tryptophan, melatonin, and serotonin), with the redox intermediates compound I (k2) and compound II (k3) of the plant enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and the two mammalian enzymes lactoperoxidase (LPO) and myeloperoxidase (MPO), was performed using the sequential-mixing stopped-flow technique. We elucidated the effects of different diacylglycerols (DAGs), i.e. 1-stearoyl-2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycerol (SAG), 1-stearoyl-2-docosahexaenoyl-sn-glycerol (SDG), and 1-stearoyl-2-eicosapentaenoyl-sn-glycerol (SEG), on [3H]PDBu binding to RasGRP. The competition studies with these DAGs on [3H]PDBu binding to RasGRP revealed different Ki values for these DAG molecular species. International audience; β-Thalassaemia major (β-TM) is an inherited haemoglobinopathy caused by a quantitative defect in the synthesis of β-globin chains of haemoglobin, leading to the accumulation of free α-globin chains that form toxic aggregates.
