Mechanical Stresses: Inhibitor of Catalyst of High Temperature Oxidation?

2001

Oxidation of metals is a complex reaction in which mechanical and chemical phenomena occur. A dynamic and macroscopic model is developed in order to simulate oxidation kinetics of a metal. It includes the stress/diffusion coupling in the bulk and the interfacial phenomena at metal/oxide interface. Its application to the Zr/ZrO 2 system shows the important role of stress field distribution in oxide on kinetic behavior. According to the sign of stress gradient in the oxide scale, the oxidation rate can speed up or slow down. The calculated kinetic curves could he fitted using a k p .t 1/n law where n and kp vary all over the process, like for the experimental kinetic curves.

The paradoxical cyanide-stimulated respiration of Zymomonas mobilis: cyanide sensitivity of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH II)

2003

The respiratory inhibitor cyanide stimulates growth of the ethanologenic bacteriumZymomonas mobilis, perhaps by diverting reducing equivalents from respiration to ethanol synthesis, thereby minimizing accumulation of toxic acetaldehyde. This study sought to identify cyanide-sensitive components of respiration. In aerobically grown, permeabilizedZ. mobiliscells, addition of 200 μM cyanide caused gradual inhibition of ADH II, the iron-containing alcohol dehydrogenase isoenzyme, which, in aerobic cultures, might be oxidizing ethanol and supplying NADH to the respiratory chain. In membrane preparations, NADH oxidase was inhibited more rapidly, but to a lesser extent, than ADH II. The time-cours…

The Total Work Measured During a High Intensity Isokinetic Fatigue Test Is Associated With Anaerobic Work Capacity.

2016

The purpose of the study was to determine whether total work measured during a high intensity isokinetic fatigue test (TWFAT) could be considered as a valid measure of anaerobic work capacity (AWC), such as determined by total work measured during a Wingate Anaerobic Test (TWWAnT). Twenty well-trained cyclists performed 2 randomly ordered sessions involving a high intensity isokinetic fatigue test consisting in 30 reciprocal maximal concentric contractions of knee flexors and extensors at 180°·s(-1), and a Wingate Anaerobic Test. We found that TWFAT of knee extensors was largely lower than TWWAnT (4151 ± 691 vs 22313 ± 2901 J, respectively, p0.05, Hedge's g = 4.27). Both measures were highl…

An experimental and modelling study of the oxidation of 3-pentanol at high pressure

2018

International audience; High pressure oxidation of 3-pentanol is investigated in a jet-stirred reactor and in a shock tube. Experiments in the reactor were carried out at 10 atm, between 730 and 1180 K, for equivalence ratios of 0.35, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 1000 ppm fuel, at a constant residence time of 0.7 s. Reactant, product and intermediate species mole fractions were recorded using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography (GC). Ignition delay times were measured for 3-pentanol/O2 mixtures in argon in a shock tube at 20 and 40 bar, in a temperature range of 1000–1470 K and for equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1 and 2. The fuel did not show any low-temperature reactivity…

Speed-dependent line profile: A test of a unified model from the Doppler to the collisional regime for molecule-molecule collisions

2000

International audience; A speed-dependent line profile combining soft and hard fully correlated Dicke-narrowing collisions was recently successfully tested on Ar-broadened H-2 spectra in a wide density and temperature range. A further test for mixtures of H-2 in nitrogen molecules (instead of Ar atoms) is presented. This test is also based on high resolution Raman investigation of the isotropic Q(1) line of H-2 from low to high density at various temperatures. The same consistency of the speed-dependent line profile as for H-2-Ar is obtained for H-2-N-2 through a remarkable agreement with all the data by using a unique set of four parameters (the collisional width and shift, the kinetic fre…

Influence of third-order dispersion on the propagation of incoherent light in optical fibers

2010

International audience; We study the influence of third-order dispersion effects on the propagation of an incoherent nonlinear wave in an optical fiber system. The wave spectrum is shown to exhibit a highly asymmetric deformation characterized by a lateral spectral shoulder and the subsequent formation of an unexpected constant spectral pedestal. A kinetic approach to the problem reveals the existence of an invariant that explains in detail the essential properties of such asymmetric spectral evolution of the wave.

Generic nature of long-range repulsion mechanism on a bulk insulator?

2017

Dynamic atomic force microscopy measurements are reported that provide evidence for the presence of long-range repulsion in molecular self-assembly on a bulk insulator surface. We present the structures formed from four different benzoic acid derivatives on the (10.4) cleavage plane of calcite kept in ultra-high vacuum. These molecules have in common that they self-assemble into molecular stripes when deposited onto the surface held at room temperature. For all molecules tested, a detailed analysis of the stripe-to-stripe distance distribution reveals a clear deviation from what would be expected for randomly placed, non-interacting stripes (i.e., geometric distribution). When excluding kin…

Effect of cropping cycles and repeated herbicide applications on the degradation of diclofop-methyl, bentazone, diuron, isoproturon and pendimethalin…

2002

A greenhouse study was conducted to investigate the ability of four crops (wheat, corn, oilseed rape and soybean) to influence the degradation of bentazone, diclofop-methyl, diuron, isoproturon and pendimethalin in soil. The present study showed that microbial biomass-carbon was significantly higher in planted soils than in bulk soil, especially with wheat and corn, after several cropping cycles. The biomass in corn and soybean planted soils was adversely affected by bentazone but recovered after three cropping cycles. In wheat-planted soils, diclofop-methyl application resulted in persistent increase of the amount of microbial biomass. Bentazone did not show accelerated degradation even af…
