Determination of transport and kinetic properties in self-propagating high-temperature synthesis

International audience; Exothermic reactions in solid powders are analyzed using the usual macroscopic modeling based on the heat transfer equation coupled to an Arrhenius type of dynamics. This problem have important applications in the synthesis of intermetallics and ceramic materials which occur when a high temperature reaction wave propagates throughout the system. Understanding the mechanism of such processes are thus crucial in mastering real laboratory experiments. On numerical simulation of electromagnetic field effects in the combustion process

This paper deals with a simplified model taking into account the interplay of compressible, laminar, axisymmetric flow and the electrodynamical effects due to Lorentz force’s action on the combustion process in a cylindrical pipe. The combustion process with Arrhenius kinetics is modelled by a single step exothermic chemical reaction of fuel and oxidant. We analyze non-stationary PDEs with 6 unknown functions: the 3 components of velocity, density, concentration of fuel and temperature. For pressure the ideal gas law is used. For the inviscid flow approximation ADI method is used. Some numerical results are presented.

Combustion synthesis of MoSi2 and MoSi2–Mo5Si3 composites: Multilayer modeling and control of the microstructure

International audience; In this work, we present a multilayer modeling for the formation of molybdenum silicides in the exothermic reaction between Mo and Si under the influence of a temperature pulse. The heating rate can either be a well-controlled ramp or be generated spontaneously by the propagation of a combustion synthesis front. The model addresses the specific situation above the melting point of silicon and describes the solid–liquid reaction taking place in a single representative particle of molybdenum surrounded by the melt of silicon. First principles investigations of Pd-on-Au nanostructures for trichloroethene catalytic removal from groundwater

Catalytic groundwater remediation from chlorinated organic solvents like trichloroethene (TCE) has been found to be more effective and sustainable than traditional non-destructive methods. Among the experimentally studied catalyst materials, Pd-decorated Au nanoparticles show the highest activity and selectivity combined with the best resistance towards poisoning by chemicals present in groundwater. In this study the thermochemistry and adsorption geometries of TCE and its hydrodechlorination products are investigated via density functional theory calculations. Studies of polyamines transport through liquid membranes with D2EHPA as a carrier.

The transport of polyamines through the liquid membranes with di‐2‐ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) was investigated. The study was performed in three main steps: liquid–liquid extraction (LLE), bulk liquid membrane (BLM) extraction, and supported liquid membrane (SLM) extraction. Equilibrium distribution experiments allowed determining the extraction constants and stoichiometric coefficients for each polyamine. It turned out that one amino group binds two molecules of carrier (one D2EHPA dimer) and the extractability of polyamine rises with the increase in number of function groups in the molecule. Firing characteristics of vestibular nuclei neurons in the alert monkey after bilateral vestibular neurectomy

After destruction of the peripheral vestibular system which is not activated by moving large-field visual stimulation, not only labyrinthine-ocular reflexes but also optokinetic-ocular responses related to the "velocity storage" mechanism are abolished. In the normal monkey optokinetic-ocular responses are reflected in sustained activity changes of central vestibular neurons within the vestibular nuclei. Directed Assembly of Soft Colloids through Rapid Solvent Exchange

We studied the directed assembly of soft nanoparticles through rapid micromixing of polymers in solution with a nonsolvent. Both experiments and computer simulations were performed to elucidate the underlying physics and to investigate the role of various process parameters. In particular, we discovered that no external stabilizing agents or charged end groups are required to keep the colloids separated from each other when water is used as the nonsolvent. Furthermore, the size of the nanoparticles can be reliably tuned through the mixing rate and the ratio between polymer solution and nonsolvent. Abstract Liver microsomes of rats fed an essential fatty acid (EFA)-deficient diet or a commercial balanced diet were used to study the effect of incubation time on the Δ 5 -desaturation of [ 14 C] dihomogammalinolenic acid (20:3( n −6)) into arachidonic acid (20:4( n −6)) and incorporation of the two acids into microsomal phospholipids. The EFA-deficient diet highly increased the desaturation rate of 20:3( n −6). Incorporation of the formed 20:4( n −6) into microsomal phospholipids was also increased but at saturating concentration of substrate only. To examine the effects of psychosocial stress and the "stress hormone," epinephrine, on essential fatty acid metabolism in rats, two studies were conducted.
