Dead Dog Talking : Posthumous, Preposthumous, and Preposterous Canine Narration in Charles Siebert’s Angus
2020
The section focusing on narrating and narrated animals opens with Mikko Keskinen’s chapter, which probes the narrational peculiarities of posthumous tales told by dogs. The primary target of Keskinen’s analysis is Charles Siebert’s novel Angus (2000), a first-person memoir of a dying Jack Russell terrier. The novel presents its canine protagonist Angus as having an outstanding command of the English language, whereby it is no surprise that his lineage turns out to be particularly literary. Yet there are curious idiosyncrasies in his parlance, which appear to suggest a uniquely cynomorphic language and worldview. Since Angus the dog resides on the border zone between human and nonhuman spher…
Jäljet sanoissa : jälkistrukturalistisen kirjallisuuskäsityksen tulo 1980-luvun Suomeen
2009
The present study aims at exploring the ways in which the poststructuralist conception of literature came to Finnish literary discourse in the 1980s. The main focus of the study is in the analysis of Markku Eskelinen and Jyrki Lehtola’s essay collection Jälkisanat. Sianhoito-opas (1987) along with its reception. The study also charts what was written about poststructuralism in the 1980s in Finnish before Jälkisanat and after it. The corpus of the study therefore consists of Jälkisanat, 25 reviews written about it and a great number of articles published in such Finnish newspapers and journals as Helsingin Sanomat, Parnasso, Taide, Synteesi, Tiede & edistys etc.The first Finnish writings on …
Lääkärin ja potilaan vuorovaikutus tutkimuskohteena
2012

Physical activity as a protective factor for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease: systematic review, meta-analysis and quality assessment of cohort and …

Public libraries, literary art activities and social inclusion
2019
This paper focuses on literary art activities in public libraries. The aim is to stimulate discussion on how literary art activities can promote socially sustainable development, a sense of community, and social inclusion. In Finland, public libraries organise low-threshold literary art activities that encourage both written and verbal expression, e.g. literary art clubs, rap and comics workshops, and creative writing groups. Literary art activities provide opportunities for the improvement of literacy, self-expression and social readiness, and the strengthening of self-esteem and identity. Moreover, they can promote community spirit. Libraries respond to current societal challenges and the…
Dementia in former amateur and professional contact sports participants : population-based cohort study, systematic review, and meta-analysis
2023
Background Although there is growing evidence that former professional athletes from sports characterised by repetitive head impact subsequently experience an elevated risk of dementia, the occurrence of this disorder in retired amateurs, who represent a larger population, is uncertain. The present meta-analysis integrates new results from individual-participant analyses of a cohort study of former amateur contact sports participants into a systematic review of existing studies of retired professionals and amateurs. Methods The cohort study comprised 2005 male retired amateur athletes who had competed internationally for Finland (1920–1965) and a general population comparison group of 1386 …

From Mobile Crimes to Crimes of Mobility
2020
Piipponen, Mäntymäki and Rodi-Risberg suggest that many contemporary crime narratives across the globe host a heightened interest in diverse and ambiguous mobilities, border crossings and borderlands. They propose that such mobilities and crossings reflect on recent sociocultural developments on local and global levels and communicate specific geopolitical anxieties. They position their own mobilities research perspective within existing crime fiction scholarship, especially within the so-called transnational and spatial turns. Introducing some key observations of mobilities research, they suggest that mobility can be considered both as an object of study in its own right and a critical len…
