Caliber-persistent Artery: A Case Report

2019

ABSTRACT The caliber-persistent labial artery (CPLA) is a vascular anomaly in which a main branch of the artery penetrates the submucosal area of the lip without loss of caliber. It commonly presents as an elevated soft tissue mass and is often pulsatile on manual palpation. Clinical suspicion is important, given the risk of bleeding, either from slight trauma or accidentally if lack of awareness leads to excision of the lesion owing to an incorrect diagnosis. CPLA should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any lesion affecting the lip, especially to differentiate from mucocele or squamous cell carcinoma. This particular case of CPLA in the upper lip of a girl presents a both unu…

Calibration and Validation

2016

The aim of this chapter is to summarise the problems incurred during the phases of calibrating and validating the extortion racket models used by the GLODERS project. The chapter starts with the discussion of the data availability and summarises shortly the contents of Sect. 4.3. It continues with a discussion of what parameterisation, calibration, sensitivity analysis and validation have to do with each other and ends up with a discussion of the validity of the GLODERS models.

Calidad, Validación de métodos, Control de calidad, Incertidumbre, Acreditación de laboratorios

2010

Analysis of linear alkylbenzene samples with a camera-based equipment

2017

Nestemäisiä tuikeaineita hyödyntävät ilmaisimet ovat saaneet jalansijaa neutriinofysiikassa viime vuosikymmeninä. Perinteisiin Cherenkovin ilmaisimiin niiden etu on suurempi hiukkasten vuorovaikutuksesta aiheutuvan valon tuotto. Lisäksi edullisten, suhteellisen ympäristöystävällisten ja optisesti kirkkaiden tuikeaineyhdisteiden (bentseenin alkyylijohdannaiset) saatavuus mahdollistaa yhä suurempien ilmaisimien rakennuksen. Nestemäisten tuikeaineiden ongelmana on kuitenkin niiden taipumus kerätä epäpuhtauksia itseensä ja niiden muutosalttius UV-säteilyn ja korkeiden lämpötilojen vaikutuksesta. Muutokset heikentävät tuikeaineiden valon tuottoa, ja siksi nestemäisten tuikeaineiden puhdistusta j…

Insights into the relationships of Palearctic and Nearctic lymnaeids (Mollusca : Gastropoda) by rDNA ITS-2 sequencing and phylogeny of stagnicoline i…

2003

Fascioliasis by Fasciola hepatica is the vector-borne disease presenting the widest latitudinal, longitudinal and altitudinal distribution known. F. hepatica shows a great adaptation power to new environmental conditions which is the consequence of its own capacities together with the adaptation and colonization abilities of its specific vector hosts, freshwater snails of the family Lymnaeidae. Several lymnaeid species only considered as secondary contributors to the liver fluke transmission have, however, played a very important role in the geographic expansion of this disease. Many of them belong to the so-called "stagnicoline" type group. Stagnicolines have, therefore, a very important a…

Whole-body pharmacokinetics of HDAC inhibitor drugs, butyric acid, valproic acid and 4-phenylbutyric acid measured with carbon-11 labeled analogs by …

2013

The fatty acids, n-butyric acid (BA), 4-phenylbutyric acid (PBA) and valproic acid (VPA, 2-propylpentanoic acid) have been used for many years in the treatment of a variety of CNS and peripheral organ diseases including cancer. New information that these drugs alter epigenetic processes through their inhibition of histone deacetylases (HDACs) has renewed interest in their biodistribution and pharmacokinetics and the relationship of these properties to their therapeutic and side effect profiles. In order to determine the pharmacokinetics and biodistribution of these drugs in primates, we synthesized their carbon-11 labeled analogues and performed dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) in…

Immunomodulation and Anti-inflammatory Roles of Polyphenols as Anticancer Agents

2011

Cancers are the largest cause of mortality and morbidity in industrialized countries. Several new concepts have emerged in relation to mechanisms that contribute to the regulation of carcinogenesis processes and associated inflammatory effects such as the modulation of innate immune cells and adaptive immune cells that could infiltrate the tumor. In the tumor microenvironment, there is a delicate balance between antitumor immunity and tumor-originated proinflammatory activity, which weaken antitumor immunity. Consequently; modulation of immune cells and inflammatory processes represent attractive targets for therapeutic intervention in malignant diseases with the goal to restore the sensiti…

Morphological transformation and DNA adduct formation by dibenz[a,h]anthracene and its metabolites in C3H10T1/2CL8 cells.

1994

The major routes of metabolic activation of dibenz[a,h]-anthracene (DBA) have been studied in transformable C3H10T1/2CL8 (C3H10T1/2) mouse embryo fibroblasts in culture. The morphological transforming activities of three potential intermediates formed by metabolism of DBA by C3H10T1/2 cells, trans-3,4-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydro-DBA-(DBA-3,4-diol), trans-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydro-DBA-anti-1,2-oxide (DBA-3,4-diol-1,2-oxide) and DBA-5,6-oxide were determined. DBA-3,4-diol-1,2-oxide was a strong morphological transforming agent giving a mean of 73% dishes with Type II or III foci and 1.63 Type II and III foci per dish at 0.5 microgram/ml. DBA-3,4-diol produced a mean of 42% dishes with Type II or III fo…
