Musical pitch quantization as an eigenvalue problem

How can discrete pitches and chords emerge from the continuum of sound? Using a quantum cognition model of tonal music, we prove that the associated Schrödinger equation in Fourier space is invariant under continuous pitch transpositions. However, this symmetry is broken in the case of transpositions of chords, entailing a discrete cyclic group as transposition symmetry. Our research relates quantum mechanics with music and is consistent with music theory and seminal insights by Hermann von Helmholtz.
Structural characterisation of the natural membrane-bound state of melittin: a fluorescence study of a dansylated analogue

Abstract The binding of a dansylated analogue of melittin (DNC–melittin) to natural membranes is described. The cytolytic peptide from honey bee venom melittin was enzymatically labelled in its glutamine-25 with the fluorescent probe monodansylcadaverine using guinea pig liver transglutaminase. The labelled peptide was characterised functionally in cytolytic assays, and spectroscopically by circular dichroism and fluorescence. The behaviour of DNC–melittin was, in all respects, indistinguishable from that of the naturally occurring peptide. The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is commonly infected by the gregarine parasite Ascogregarina taiwanensis, which develops extracellularly in the midgut of infected larvae. The intracellular trophozoites are usually confined within a parasitophorous vacuole, whose acidification is generated and controlled by the V(1)V(O) ATPase. This proton pump is driven by ATP hydrolysis, catalyzed inside the major subunit A. Resumen: Partiendo de la hipótesis, avanzada por Horkheimer y Adorno, de que Auschwitz era una posibilidad inscrita en la racionalidad instrumental de la civiliza- ción moderna, el artículo analiza algunos mecanismos de la estructura de empresa heredada del industrialismo que pudieron contribuir a ‘normalizar’ lo anormal en el Holocausto nazi.
