FMapper: Scalable read mapper based on succinct hash index on SunWay TaihuLight
2022
Abstract One of the most important application in bioinformatics is read mapping. With the rapidly increasing number of reads produced by next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, there is a need for fast and efficient high-throughput read mappers. In this paper, we present FMapper – a highly scalable read mapper on the TaihuLight supercomputer optimized for its fourth-generation ShenWei many-core architecture (SW26010). In order to fully exploit the computational power of the SW26010, we employ dynamic scheduling of tasks, asynchronous I/O and data transfers and implement a vectorized version of the banded Myers algorithm tailored to the 256 bit vector registers of the SW26010. Our perf…
Buccal drug delivery: what's new and what does the future hold?
2014
The buccal mucosa is the stratified squamous epithelial tissue inside lining of the cheeks. It is a favorable site of drug absorption since the tissue is non-keratinized, relatively immobile and strongly supplied with blood by a dense capillary-vessel network; moreover, it is highly tolerant to allergens, resistant to potentially harmful agents and has a relatively low enzymatic activity. The tissue consents quick onset of effect, offers an easily accessible and generally well-accepted site for drug delivery, is a useful route of administration in patients in an unconscious state (e.g., when swallowing is impaired), and is suitable for retentive dosage forms of administration. Buccal mucosa…
COMBINATION OF ARGAN OIL AND PHOSPHOLIPIDS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EFFECTIVE LIPOSOME-LIKE FORMULATION ABLE TO IMPROVE SKIN HYDRATION AND ALLANTOIN…
2016
Allantoin is traditionally employed in the treatment of skin ulcers and hypertrophic scars. In the present work, to improve its local deposition in the skin and deeper tissues, allantoin was incorporated in conventional liposomes and in new argan oil enriched liposomes. In both cases, obtained vesicles were unilamellar, as confirmed by cryo-TEM observation, but the addition of argan oil allowed a slight increase of the mean diameter (∼130nm versus ∼85nm). The formulations, especially those containing argan oil, favoured the allantoin accumulation in the skin, in particular in the dermis (∼8.7μg/cm(2)), and its permeation through the skin (∼33μg/cm(2)). The performances of vesicles as skin d…
Gold nanostar–polymer hybrids for siRNA delivery: Polymer design towards colloidal stability and in vitro studies on breast cancer cells
2017
To overcome the low bioavailability of siRNA (small interfering RNA) and to improve their transfection efficiency, the use of non-viral delivery carriers is today a feasible approach to transform the discovery of these incredibly potent and versatile drugs into clinical practice. Polymer-modified gold nanoconstructs (AuNCs) are currently viewed as efficient and safe intracellular delivery carriers for siRNA, as they have the possibility to conjugate the ability to stably entrap and deliver siRNAs inside cells with the advantages of gold nanoparticles, which can act as theranostic agents and radiotherapy enhancers through laser-induced hyperthermia. In this study, AuNCs were prepared by coat…
Multisensory texture exploration at the tip of the pen
2016
A tool for the multisensory stylus-based exploration of virtual textures was used to investigate how different feedback modalities (static or dynamically deformed images, vibration, sound) affect exploratory gestures. To this end, we ran an experiment where participants had to steer a path with the stylus through a curved corridor on the surface of a graphic tablet/display, and we measured steering time, dispersion of trajectories, and applied force. Despite the variety of subjective impressions elicited by the different feedback conditions, we found that only nonvisual feedback induced significant variations in trajectories and an increase in movement time. In a post-experiment, using a pa…
SAMSLAM: Simulated Annealing Monocular SLAM
2013
This paper proposes a novel monocular SLAM approach. For a triplet of successive keyframes, the approach inteleaves the registration of the three 3D maps associated to each image pair in the triplet and the refinement of the corresponding poses, by progressively limiting the allowable reprojection error according to a simulated annealing scheme. This approach computes only local overlapping maps of almost constant size, thus avoiding problems of 3D map growth. It does not require global optimization, loop closure and back-correction of the poses.
3D visualization of engendering collaborative leadership in the space
2012
The paper focuses on collaborative leadership in education and how to illustrate its engendering process in a three-dimensional space. This complex and fluid process is examined as distributed and pedagogical within a Finnish vocational upper secondary educational organization. As a consequence, the notion of distributed pedagogical leadership is used when collaborative leadership in education is studied. Collaborative leadership is argued to consist of the innermost substance of a professional learning community, as attributes of a group of people working together for specific purposes. Therefore, collaborative leadership naturally involves actors, activities, and context. However, the inn…
Do you know what you are reading for? Exploring the effects of a task model enhancement on fifth graders' purposeful reading
2021
International audience; Background: Drawing on theories of purposeful reading, this study explored task conditions that support fifth graders' selective reading of documents in order to answer questions. More specifically, we investigated whether promoting students' elaboration of their task model increases task performance. Methods: Participants had to answer series of questions by searching documents for the relevant information. Half the participants received a task model prompt, and half received a control prompt. Participants' eye movements were recorded during text search, in order to investigate more precisely the effect of an enhanced task model. Results: Participants provided more …
“You really brought all your feelings out” – Scaffolding students to identify the socio-emotional and socio-cognitive challenges in collaborative lea…
2021
Abstract The aim of this study is to explore how students experience and describe socio-cognitive and socio-emotional challenges in collaborative learning. The participants (N = 20) were teacher education students whose collaborative learning was supported with a designed regulation macro script during a six-week mathematics course. The purpose of the script was to provide structured phases during the collaborative learning tasks for the group members to plan, monitor, and evaluate their workings. The video data of groups' face-to-face work was collected and analysed by focusing on the different types of challenges the groups experienced and the types of challenges they described during the…
Employment trajectories until midlife associate with early social role investments and current work-related well-being
2021
Applying social investment theory (SIT), we examined whether employment trajectories until midlife, with differential investments in education and employment, are associated with social investments during early life and with work-related well-being in midlife, with a special reference to potential differences between self-employment and paid work. In the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (n = 6496; 2963 men, 3533 women), life-history calendars from age 16 to 45 were used to determine the respondents’ yearly employment statuses (student, full-time employee, part-time employee, self-employed, unemployed, on parental leave, on sabbatical leave or otherwise not working). Latent class analysis …
