Experimental demonstration and numerical study of plasmon-soliton waves

2019

Merging the fields of plasmonics and nonlinear optics authorizes a variety of fascinating and original physical phenomena. In this work, we specifically study the combination of the strong light confinement ability of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) with the beam self-trapping effect in a nonlinear optical Kerr medium. Although this idea of plasmon-soliton has been the subject of numerous theoretical papers since the eighties [1–4], up to now, no experimental evidence had been revealed yet. In the present study, a proper structure (Fig. 1a) has been designed and fabricated allowing the first experimental demonstration of these hybrid nonlinear waves merging spatial solitons and SPP. To be …

Copper Dynamics and Impact on Microbial Communities in Soils of Variable Organic Status

2008

International audience; The effect of soil organic status on copper impact was investigated by means of a microcosm study carried out on a vineyard soil that had been amended with varying types of organic matter during a previous long-term field experiment. Soil microcosms were contaminated at 250 mg Cu kg−1 and incubated for 35 days. Copper distribution and dynamics were assessed in the solid matrix by a sequential extraction procedure and in the soil solution by measuring total and free exchangeable copper concentrations. Copper bioavailability was also measured with a whole-cell biosensor. Modifications of microbial communities were assessed by means of biomass-C measurements and charact…

Évolution du bilan hydrique à l'échelle de bassins versants en contexte de changement climatique – mise place d’une méthodologie

2014

Assessment of hydric balance at the catchment scale, under climate change scenario Face to climate change, public policies must implement adaptation strategies. This implies that the effects of climate change are plainly identified on territories. However, in the current state, data and knowledge at the local level are limited or not available to decision makers. This work proposes to well characterize the local impacts of climate change and to develop synergies between researchers and territorial actors to prepare the public decision.

Ex Ante evaluation of gene flow in oilseed rape with cropping system models

2013

Chapitre 4; Oilseed rape (OSR) genes can escape fields in space via pollen and seeds, and in time via volunteers resulting from seeds lost before or during oilseed rape harvest. When varieties co-exist, e.g. genetically-modified (GM) and non-GM varieties, this spatio-temporal gene flow can lead to the adventitious presence of GM seeds in non-GM harvests and thus cause financial losses for farmers and cooperatives. Gene flow depends on crop locations, succession, and management, as well as the location and management of semi-natural areas such as roadverges. The objective of this investigation was to present a simulation methodology using the spatially-explicit cropping system model GENESYS …

Pois protéagineux : cheminement de la recherche génétique pour la sélection des paramètres à prendre en compte pour l’amélioration de la stabilité du…

2013

Field Pea: development of genetic research for the selection of parameters to take into account to improve yield stability. Legumes were essential in rotations in the past, but they fell off during the 20th century. Maybe they will come back into favour in the 21st century thanks to its economy, agri-environment and food assets. Field Pea is the main crop of this family in France, but it remains underdeveloped because its unstable yield does not enable the farmers to ensure their income security. Therefore researchers should focus on yield stability. Modelling Pea remains difficult because of its indeterminate development. Parameters to take into account are many and their significance must…

Changes in the pea seed proteome in response to drought combined with sulfur deficiency

2017

EABAPGEAPSI DOCT INRA; Pea (Pisum sativum L.) produces seeds rich in proteins, but seed yield and quality remain unstable across years due to abiotic stresses occurring during the reproductive period. Drought and sulfur deficiency are two abiotic stresses that interact in the current context of climate change and lowinput practices, and recent studies suggest a role of sulfate transport and metabolism in the plant response to drought (Ernst et al., 2010; Chan et al., 2013; Gallardo et al., 2014; Ahmad et al., 2016). In this study, we investigated the impact of sulfur deficiency combined with drought on the pea seed proteome. Pea plants were subjected to sulfur-deficiency two weeks after sow…

The role of slabs and oceanic plate geometry in the net rotation of the lithosphere, trench motions, and slab return flow

2012

International audience; [1] Absolute plate motion models with respect to a deep mantle reference frame (e.g., hot spots) typically contain some net rotation (NR) of the lithosphere. Global mantle flow models for the present-day plate setting reproduce similarly oriented NRs but with amplitudes significantly smaller than those found in some high NR Pacific hot spot reference frames. It is therefore important to understand the mechanisms of NR excitation, which we attempt here with two-dimensional cylindrical models of an idealized Pacific domain. We study the influence of slab properties, oceanic ridge position, continental keels, and a weak asthenospheric layer on NR and trench migration. F…
