Clinical and laboratorial profile and histological features on minor salivary glands from patients under investigation for Sjogren´s syndrome
2013
Diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is complex and the usefulness of labial minor salivary glands biopsy in this process remains controversial. Objectives: to evaluate the clinical and laboratorial profile and histological features on labial minor salivary glands from patients under investigation of SS. Study D esign: clinical charts from 38 patients under suspicion of SS and submitted to labial minor salivary glands biopsies were reviewed. Clinical and laboratorial data were retrieved from the clinical files and the HE-stained histological slides were reviewed under light microscopy. Results: mean age of the patients was 56.5 years and 97% were females; histological analysis showed that 4…
The role of intrinsic pathway in apoptosis activation and progression in Peyronie's Disease.
2014
Peyronie’s disease (PD) is characterized with formation of fibrous plaques which result in penile deformity, pain, and erectile dysfunction. The aim of this study was to investigate the activation of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway in plaques from PD patients. Tunica albuginea from either PD or control patients was assessed for the expression of bax, bcl-2 and caspases 9 and 3 using immunohistochemistry and by measurement of apoptotic cells using TUNEL assay. Bax overexpression was observed in metaplastic bone tissue, in fibroblasts, and in myofibroblast of plaques from PD patients. Little or no bcl-2 immunostaining was detected in samples from either patients or controls. Caspase 3 immunos…
Different immunophenotypical apoptotic profiles characterise megakaryocytes of essential thrombocythaemia and primary myelofibrosis.
2009
Aims: Essential thrombocythaemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis (PMF) share some clinical and pathological features, but show different biological behaviour and prognosis. The latest contributions to understanding the nature of these disorders have focused on bone marrow microenvironment remodelling and proliferative stress, recognising megakaryocytes (MKCs) as “key-cells”. The aim of this study was to investigate the apoptotic profile of ET and PMF MKCs in order to further characterise the biology of these disorders. Methods: Bone marrow biopsy samples from 30 patients with ET, and 30 patients with PMF, were immunophenotypically studied for the expression of pro-apoptotic (Fas, Fas-L, Bax,…
Chromophobe cell renal carcinoma and its variants--a report on 32 cases.
1988
This paper reports on 32 chromophobe cell renal carcinomas observed in 697 renal cell cancers (RCC) of adults (peak in the sixth decade of life). The chromophobe cell-type differs from other types of RCC macroscopically, the cut-surface being predominantly of grey-beige colour. Histologically, there are two variants: one is the typical (light) variant (n = 22) and the other is eosinophilic (n = 10). Both variants have in common (a) reaction of the cytoplasm with Hale's acid iron colloid; (b) electron microscopic detection of cytoplasmic microvesicles (150-300 nm), frequently with 'inner vesicles', and (c) low glycogen content in comparison with the clear cell carcinoma. Immunocytochemical i…
Microvascular abnormalities in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
2006
Summary Microvascular involvement represents one of the first apparent steps in many autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Early in the disease, peripheral microangiopathy may be easily recognized and studied by videocapillaroscopy. The aim of this study has been to observe the differences in labial microcirculation between healthy patients and patients suffering from RA. A total of 30 healthy patients and 30 patients suffering from RA were examined. The patients with conditions known to compromise microcirculation, such as diabetes, hypertension, or some pharmacological treatments were not included in the study. All the patients were non-smokers. Labial capillaroscopy was …
Value of chromoendoscopy and magnification endoscopy in the evaluation of duodenal abnormalities: a prospective, randomized comparison.
2003
Background and study aims Endoscopic staining methods are increasingly being used to evaluate lesions in the esophagus and colon. The aim of this prospective study was to investigate chromoendoscopy and magnification endoscopy for the evaluation of mucosal lesions in the duodenum. Patients and methods Consecutive patients were randomly assigned to undergo conventional endoscopy without staining (group A) or intravital staining of the duodenal mucosa with indigo carmine and evaluation with a conventional video endoscope (group B) or a magnification endoscope (group C). Visible lesions were characterized before and after staining, and biopsies were taken for histological assessment. Results A…
Evaluation of labial microvessels in Sjogren syndrome: A videocapillaroscopic study
2008
Summary Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune rheumatic disease characterized by a progressive lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands, especially salivary and lachrymal ones, leading to xerostomia, parotid gland enlargement, and xerophtalmia. SS may occur alone (primary) or in association with almost any of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases (secondary), the most frequent being rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of this study is to describe the capillaroscopic pattern of the labial mucosa in patients with SS. Methods A total of 20 patients affected by SS and 20 healthy controls were examined. The patients with conditions that compromise microcirculation, such as diabetes, hypertens…
Involvement of the CD95 (APO-1/Fas) receptor and ligand system in Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric epithelial apoptosis.
1998
Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulceration, and gastric carcinoma. The potential role of CD95-mediated apoptosis was investigated in a panel of gastric biopsies obtained from patients with H. pylori-associated chronic gastritis (n = 29) and with noninfected normal mucosa (n = 10). Immunohistochemistry revealed increased CD95 receptor expression in epithelial and lamina propria cells in chronic gastritis. By in situ hybridization, CD95 ligand mRNA was absent or low in normal mucosa but expressed at high levels in lamina propria lymphocytes and, unexpectedly, in epithelial cells in chronic gastritis. Apoptotic cells were rare in normal mucosa but wer…
Expression of Peripheral Node Addressins by Plasmacytic Plaque of Children, APACHE, TRAPP, and Primary Cutaneous Angioplasmacellular Hyperplasia.
2018
High-endothelial venules are a common feature of 3 types of cutaneous pseudolymphomas: pretibial lymphoplasmacytic plaque (PLP) of children, acral pseudolymphomatous angiokeratoma of children (APACHE), and T-cell rich angiomatoid polypoid pseudolymphoma (TRAPP). In addition, primary cutaneous angioplasmacellular hyperplasia (PCAH) overlaps with these other 3 conditions. We intend to study the expression of peripheral node addressins in PLP, APACHE, TRAPP, and PCAH. We studied 1 case of PLP, 2 cases of APACHE, 2 cases of TRAPP, and 2 cases of PCAH. Immunostainings for MECA-79 and WT-1 were obtained in all cases. All cases showed a dense lymphohistiocytic dermal inflammatory infiltrate with a…
Mortality in patients with coeliac disease and their relatives: a cohort study.
2001
Summary Background Although previous studies have shown increased mortality in patients with coeliac disease and their relatives, no data are available in relation to different patterns of clinical presentation. We assessed mortality in patients with coeliac disease and their first-degree relatives. Methods We enrolled, in a prospective cohort study, 1072 adult patients with coeliac disease consecutively diagnosed in 11 gastroenterology units between 1962 and 1994, and their 3384 first-degree relatives. We compared the number of deaths up to 1998 with expected deaths and expressed the comparison as standardised mortality ratio (SMR) and relative survival ratio. Findings 53 coeliac patients …
