Forensic typing of autosomal SNPs with a 29 SNP-multiplex--results of a collaborative EDNAP exercise.
2008
We report the results of an inter-laboratory exercise on typing of autosomal single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) for forensic genetic investigations in crime cases. The European DNA Profiling Group (EDNAP), a working group under the International Society for Forensic Genetics (ISFG), organised the exercise. A total of 11 European and one US forensic genetic laboratories tested a subset of a 52 SNP-multiplex PCR kit developed by the SNPforID consortium. The 52 SNP-multiplex kit amplifies 52 DNA fragments with 52 autosomal SNP loci in one multiplex PCR. The 52 SNPs are detected in two separate single base extension (SBE) multiplex reactions with 29 and 23 SNPs, respectively, using SNaPshot …
Scanning electron microscopy of heterochromatin in chromosome spreads of male germ cells in Schistocerca gregaria (Acrididae, Orthoptera) after tryps…
1996
Chromosome spreads, prepared from testes of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria, were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after varying periods of preincubation in trypsin. The emphasis of the study was on the appearance of heterochromatin. A trypsin pretreatment of 5 sec resulted in a smooth surface on the chromatin throughout and the heterochromatin was highly electron-emissive. The facultatively heterochromatic X chromosome was clearly visible in interphase spermatogonia and in pachytene and late prophase I spermatocytes. Chromomeres of autosomal bivalents could be recognized in pachytene cells. Centromeric heterochromatin segments were very prominent in autosomes of la…
A report of an international collaborative experiment to demonstrate the uniformity obtainable using DNA profiling techniques
1992
This paper describes a collaborative exercise intended to demonstrate whether uniformity of DNA profile results could be achieved between different European laboratories. It was shown that this goal can be obtained provided that a common protocol is followed (specifically the use of a common electrophoretic buffer as being the most important parameter). Generally, lower molecular weight loci (with lower molecular weight fragments) such as YNH24 perform better than higher molecular weight loci such as MS43a. The results of the exercise are discussed in relation to the objectives of the European DNA profiling group (EDNAP).
Why do female bank voles, Clethrionomys glareolus, mate multiply?
2007
Females of many species actively engage in multiple mating, with either a single male or several males, but the adaptive function of this behaviour is often unclear. We conducted a laboratory experiment on a small mammal species, the bank vole, testing the possible benefits of multiple mating on a female's short-term reproductive success (pregnancy rate, litter size and early postnatal survival). Such benefits may affect a female's fitness either directly or indirectly (genetic benefit). We assigned females to three treatments: a single mating treatment in which females mated once with a single male and two multiple mating treatments in which females mated either twice with a single male or…
A Major Effect Gene Controlling Development and Pathogenicity in Botrytis cinerea Identified Through Genetic Analysis of Natural Mycelial Non-pathoge…
2021
Botrytis cinerea is a necrotrophic plant pathogenic fungus with a wide host range. Its natural populations are phenotypically and genetically very diverse. A survey of B. cinerea isolates causing gray mold in the vineyards of Castilla y León, Spain, was carried out and as a result eight non-pathogenic natural variants were identified. Phenotypically these isolates belong to two groups. The first group consists of seven isolates displaying a characteristic mycelial morphotype, which do not sporulate and is unable to produce sclerotia. The second group includes one isolate, which sporulates profusely and does not produce sclerotia. All of them are unresponsive to light. Crosses between a repr…

[Spanish medical center collaboration on smoking research from 1999 through 2003 according to the Science Citation Index].
2007
OBJECTIVE To analyze the network structure of collaboration between medical centers sharing authorship of scientific articles on smoking. MATERIAL AND METHODS Articles reporting smoking research by authors from 2 or more Spanish medical centers between 1999 and the end of 2003 were identified through the Science Citation Index. The network of collaboration behind the research was analyzed and the most important measures of centrality were compared. To display the data, scientometric maps were constructed using UCINET and NETDRAW network analysis tools. RESULTS Thirty-five Spanish medical centers (29 hospitals and 6 health care clinics) in 8 autonomous communities were involved in 21 collabo…
Laboratory parameters in centenarians of Italian ancestry
2008
Studies aimed at collecting reference parameters for haematochemical analysis in the elderly are scarce and for the oldest old subjects even more rare. In order to establish the reference values for the most common laboratory text in long living individuals, we measured haematochemical parameters in >100 years old subjects and in aged subjects as control. Six hundred and two centenarians accepted to be enrolled in the study. A case history containing the complete anamnesis, clinical examinations, evaluation of the clinical cognitive and functional tests, was prepared for each centenarian. Blood samples from 120 > 100 years old subjects free of chronic or acute Illness (i.e. Alzheimer’s dise…
Cost-effectiveness of a multi-professional case management experiment in Finnish labor market services
2020
The study undertook an economic evaluation of a multi-professional case man-agement intervention targeted at long-term unemployed Finns. The cost-effectiveness outcome of the intervention was analyzed in a matched case-control study framework involving a six-month follow-up. Effectiveness was measured by standardized quality of life indicators, and an indicator measuring personal capabilities. Individual level costs were derived from health and social services utilization data. Cost-effectiveness of the intervention was examined in relation to services as usual. The studied labor market intervention was associated with a positive change in the selected quality of life indicators; physical a…
