Sudden sensorineural hearing loss associated with inner ear lesions detected by magnetic resonance imaging.
2017
Although recent advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques have contributed to the detection of tiny lesions in the internal auditory canal (IAC) that may be responsible for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), there have been relatively few studies on the clinical characteristics of intra-labyrinthine hemorrhage (ILH) and labyrinthitis versus those regarding IAC tumors. Our purpose was to investigate the frequency of those IAC lesions on MRI and their clinical characteristics. Initial MRIs of 200 patients with SSNHL (93 men, 107 women; mean age = 48.61 years, range: 18-84 years), as well as detailed clinical histories, audiological examinations, and thyroid function, lip…
Socio-demographic, health-related, and individual correlates of diagnostic self-testing by lay people: Results from a representative survey in Germany
2017
Introduction A broad range of self-tests (testing for e.g. HIV, cancer, hepatitis B/C) have become available and can be conducted by lay consumers without the help of a health professional. The aims of this study were to (a) investigate the prevalence of self-testing, (b) identify the most frequently used self-tests, and (c) explore the associations between socio-demographic, health-related and individual factors with self-testing. Methods A face-to-face plus paper-pencil cross-sectional survey was conducted. The sample consisted of 2.527 respondents who were representative of the German population in terms of the age, sex, and residence. Basic descriptive statistics and univariate logistic…
Outcomes after perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with proximal femoral fractures: an international cohort study
2021
ObjectivesStudies have demonstrated high rates of mortality in people with proximal femoral fracture and SARS-CoV-2, but there is limited published data on the factors that influence mortality for clinicians to make informed treatment decisions. This study aims to report the 30-day mortality associated with perioperative infection of patients undergoing surgery for proximal femoral fractures and to examine the factors that influence mortality in a multivariate analysis.SettingProspective, international, multicentre, observational cohort study.ParticipantsPatients undergoing any operation for a proximal femoral fracture from 1 February to 30 April 2020 and with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infec…
Assessment of Acute Acral Lesions in a Case Series of Children and Adolescents During the COVID-19 Pandemic
2020
Importance A novel coronavirus named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has recently been identified as the cause of a pandemic called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In this context, some associated skin diseases have been described. Cutaneous lesions referred to as acute acro-ischemia have been reported as a possible sign of COVID-19 in adolescents and children. Objective To evaluate the pathogenesis of these newly described acute acral lesions. Design, Setting, and Participants This prospective case series was conducted at La Fe University Hospital, a tertiary referral hospital in Valencia, Spain, between April 9 and April 15, 2020. Among 32 referred patien…

The Clinical Picture of Uncomplicated Versus Complicated Diverticulitis of the Colon
2007
Purpose There is no consensus about the correct definition of uncomplicated diverticulitis (UD) in clinical practice. We evaluated therefore whether clinical picture of UD differs from complicated diverticulitis (CD). Fifty consecutive eligible patients (21 males, 29 females, mean age 63.6 years, range 47–75 years) were studied. Symptoms, the inflammatory indices, and Computerized Tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen were assessed at the time of admission. Results Thirty-nine patients classified were affected by UD and 11 patients by CD. CD patients showed more severe clinical picture than UD and required urgent Hospital admission. Conversely, most of the patients affected by UD were treated…
Retrospective analysis of Desmoplastic Ameloblastoma:clinical review
2020
Background Desmoplastic Ameloblastoma (DA) is a rare, true neoplasm of jaws with reported incidence of 4-13% among other variants of Ameloblastoma, however this appears distinct than the classic Ameloblastoma in anatomical distribution and clinical presentation. This is often mistaken as a fibro-osseous lesion because of its similar radiological appearance. Material and Methods To describe the clinical, radiographic and histopathological characteristics through a series of new cases of histologically proven DA including a case of an exceptionally large, recurrent lesion along with retrospective analysis of cases from literature available for an improved understanding of the behaviour and pr…
Editor's Choice – Occurrence and Classification of Proximal Type I Endoleaks After EndoVascular Aneurysm Sealing Using the Nellix™ Device
2017
Objective/Background Proximal type I endoleaks are associated with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) growth and rupture and necessitate repair. The Nellix™ EndoVascular Aneurysm Sealing (EVAS) system is a unique approach to AAA repair, where the appearance and treatment of endoleaks is also different. This study aimed to analyse and categorise proximal endoleaks in an EVAS treated cohort. Methods All patients, treated from February 2013 to December 2015, in 15 experienced EVAS centres, presenting with proximal endoleak were included. Computed tomography scans were analysed by a core laboratory. A consensus meeting was organised to discuss and qualify each case for selection, technical aspects…
Fetuin-A is Associated to Serum Calcium and AHSG T256S Genotype but Not to Coronary Artery Calcification
2015
Vascular calcification has been recently associated to an increased cardiovascular risk and mortality. In few studies, Fetuin-A showed an association to coronary artery calcification (CAC), although the physiopathological mechanism underlying this association has not been fully established yet. Seventy-four patients with one or more cardiovascular risk factor and asymptomatic for coronary vasculopathy were included in the study. CAC was evaluated by Agatston score. Serum Fetuin-A levels were determined by ELISA. Molecular analysis of AHSG T256S gene variant (rs4918) was performed by PCR-RFLP. Serum Fetuin-A was correlated to serum calcium (r = 0,321; P = 0,018), but not to serum phosphorous…
Exhaustive physical exercise and acid hydrolase activity in mouse skeletal muscle
1978
Adult, untrained NMRI mice were exhausted on a motor-driven treadmill by an intermittent-type running programme. Serial cryostate sections for the staining of NADH-tetrazolium reductase, beta-glucuronidase, beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase, and beta-glycerophosphatase activities and for making hematoxylin-eosin staining were cut from m. quadriceps femoris 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 15 days after physical exhaustion. A strong increase in the activities of beta-glucuronidase and beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase was observed 7 days after exhaustion and the activity changes, which were similar for the both glycosidases, were more prominent in the highly oxidative red compared to less oxidative white fibres. Ac…
