2016
Bakalaura darba „Bioloģijas centralizētā eksāmena pētnieciskā laboratorijas darba izstrāde un aprobācija” mērķis ir noskaidrot vai vidusskolas bioloģijas centralizētajā eksāmenā iekļautie pētnieciskie laboratorijas darbi pilnveido skolēnu pētnieciskās prasmes. Mērķa sasniegšanai veikta literatūras analīze, izstrādāti un aprobēti divi pētnieciskie laboratorijas darbi, veiktas skolēnu aptaujas, skolotāju un personas, kura kārtojusi centralizēto eksāmenu kursu ietvaros, un eksāmena vērtēšanas komisijas pārstāves intervijas. Pētījuma rezultātā konstatēts – skolēnu pētnieciskās prasmes attīstās, to sekmē pētniecisko laboratorijas darbu regulāra izstrāde.
Exposure to trihalomethanes through different water uses and birth weight, small for gestational age, and preterm delivery in Spain
2011
Background: Evidence associating exposure to water disinfection by-products with reduced birth weight and altered duration of gestation remains inconclusive. Objective: We assessed exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs) during pregnancy through different water uses and evaluated the association with birth weight, small for gestational age (SGA), low birth weight (LBW), and preterm delivery. Methods: Mother–child cohorts set up in five Spanish areas during the years 2000–2008 contributed data on water ingestion, showering, bathing, and swimming in pools. We ascertained residential THM levels during pregnancy periods through ad hoc sampling campaigns (828 measurements) and regulatory data (264 me…
Global, regional, national, and selected subnational levels of stillbirths, neonatal, infant, and under-5 mortality, 1980-2015 : a systematic analysi…
2016
BACKGROUND: Established in 2000, Millennium Development Goal 4 (MDG4) catalysed extraordinary political, financial, and social commitments to reduce under-5 mortality by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015. At the country level, the pace of progress in improving child survival has varied markedly, highlighting a crucial need to further examine potential drivers of accelerated or slowed decreases in child mortality. The Global Burden of Disease 2015 Study (GBD 2015) provides an analytical framework to comprehensively assess these trends for under-5 mortality, age-specific and cause-specific mortality among children under 5 years, and stillbirths by geography over time. METHODS: Drawing from ana…
Methods for a prompt and reliable laboratory diagnosis of Pompe disease : report from an international consensus meeting
2008
Pompe disease is an autosomal recessive disorder of glycogen metabolism caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA). It presents at any age, with variable rates of progression ranging from a rapidly progressive course, often fatal by one-year of age, to a more slowly, but nevertheless relentlessly progressive course, resulting in significant morbidity and premature mortality. In infants, early initiation of enzyme replacement therapy is needed to gain the maximum therapeutic benefit, underscoring the need for early diagnosis. Several new methods for measuring GAA activity have been developed. The Pompe Disease Diagnostic Working Group met to review data gener…
Differential diagnosis of illness in patients under investigation for the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), Italy, February 2020
2020
A novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has been identified as the causative pathogen of an ongoing outbreak of respiratory disease, now named COVID-19. Most cases and sustained transmission occurred in China, but travel-associated cases have been reported in other countries, including Europe and Italy. Since the symptoms are similar to other respiratory infections, differential diagnosis in travellers arriving from countries with wide-spread COVID-19 must include other more common infections such as influenza and other respiratory tract diseases.
Dental approach for Apert syndrome in children : a systematic review
2017
Background Apert Syndrome (AS), or type I acrocephalosyndactyly, is a rare, congenital craniosynostosis condition resulting from missense mutations in the gene encoding fibroblast growth factor receptor 2. It is characterized by three specific clinical features: brachycephalic skull; midface hypoplasia, and limb abnormalities (syndactyly of hands and feet). The disorder exhibits variable presentations in bones, brain, skin, internal organs, and in the oral/maxillofacial region. The aim of the present paper was to show the main results from a systematic review of AS. Material and Methods A search of the literature was performed from April to June 2016 in five electronic databases. Clinical i…

On the use of a laboratory-scale Pelton wheel water turbine in renewable energy education
2008
Abstract A laboratory-scale Pelton turbine for hydroelectric generation has been constructed and used in the educational curriculum of The Renewable Energy Programme at the University of Jyvaskyla. The construction of the Pelton turbine, the experimental apparatus and the measurement procedure are described. The apparatus is simple to make and uses inexpensive components, most of which can be found in standard science laboratories. From the experimental results, the turbine was found to have a maximum mechanical efficiency of 0.47 ± 0.02 for a water flow rate of 0.17 l / s . The Pelton turbine and apparatus demonstrate the principles of hydropower and are well suited for education in renewa…
Pentachlorophenol accumulation in the freshwater mussels Anodonta anatina and Pseudanodonta complanata, and some physiological consequences of labora…
1995
Freshwater mussels Anodanta anatina and Pseudanodonta complanata were exposed to (14C)-pentachlorophenol. The wet weight based bioconcentration factor (BCF = activity in animal per activity in water) at steady state varied from 80 to 120 for A. anatina and from 61 to 85 for P. complanata. The species did not differ significantly in their wet weight or lipid based BCFs but dry weight based values were significantly higher (40-50%) for A. anatina. The soft tissue dry weight and dry weight based condition index of A. anatina (Cl4 = soft tissue dry weight per shell length) differed significantly between natural mussel populations. In animals kept from 4 to 8 months in laboratory conditions, the…
