Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase gene expression in retina and pineal gland of rats under various photoperiods

Abstract The present study examines how the circadian oscillators in the retina and the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) respond to changes in photoperiod. ArylalkylamineN-acetyltransferase (aa-nat) gene expression studied by quantitative RT-PCR revealed that in adult Sprague–Dawley rats kept under different light–dark (LD) cycles for two weeks the temporal pattern of AA-NAT mRNA expression was identical in retina and pineal gland. In both tissues, the time span between the onset of darkness and the nocturnal rise in AA-NAT mRNA expression was 3 h under LD 20:4, 6 h under LD 12:12, and 15 h under LD 4:20. AbstractThe ectomycorrhizal symbiosis is an essential guild of many forested ecosystems and has a dynamic evolutionary history across kingdom Fungi, having independently evolved from diverse types of saprotrophic ancestors. In this study, we seek to identify genomic features of the transition to the ectomycorrhizal habit within the Russulaceae, one of the most diverse lineages of ectomycorrhizal fungi. We present comparative analyses of the pangenome and gene repertoires of 21 species across the order Russulales, including a closely related saprotrophic member of Russulaceae. Probing the self-assembly and anti-glioblastoma efficacy of a cinnamoyl-capped dipeptide hydrogelator

Herein, we introduce the first diphenylalanine dipeptide hydrogelator capped with the cinnamoyl functional group (Cin-L-F-L-F). We evaluate the effects of the cinnamoyl moiety on molecular self-assembly events and resultant physical properties of the hydrogel formed. In addition, we report our preliminary results of this dipeptide's cytotoxicity against glioblastoma (GBM) cancer cells. peerReviewed
The influence of backslopping on lactic acid bacteria diversity in tarhana fermentation

Tarhana is produced at batch systems in which the microbiota has changed accordingly to the microbial load from ingredients. In order to stabilize the microbiota, the effects of backslopping carried out under different temperature regimes (25 and 30 °C), pH (3.70 and 4.00) and inoculation rates (5, 10 and 15%) on lactic acid bacteria (LAB) diversity were determined in tarhana dough. LAB and Total Aerobic Mesophilic Bacteria (TAMB) numbers increased in all tarhana dough samples subjected to backslopping. Abstract Maternal hyperphenylalanemia during pregnancy may induce a severe embryopathy characterized by microcephaly, mental retardation, facial dysmorphy and congenital heart defects. Four subjects, two pairs of sibs, with maternal hyperphenylalaninemia syndrome were included in this study and their neuropsychological performances were assessed. Maternal levels of hyperphenylalaninemia were similar in both mothers, one of them had not been diagnosed with the condition until her two children were examined at the ages of 10 and 6 years.
