Sequence, evolution and tissue expression patterns of an epidermal type I keratin from the shark Scyliorhinus stellaris.

From the shark Scyliorhinus stellaris we cloned and sequenced a cDNA encoding a novel type I keratin, termed SstK10. By MALDI-MS peptide mass fingerprinting of cytoskeletal proteins separated on polyacrylamide gels, we assigned SstK10 to a 46-kDa protein which is the major epidermal type I (“IE”) keratin in this fish and is specifically expressed in stratified epithelia. In a phylogenetic tree based on type I keratin sequences and with lamprey keratins applied as outgroup, SstK10 branches off in a rather basal position. Curating Objects from the European Border Zone: The “Lampedusa Refugee Boat”

The cultural politics of the present encourage museums and artists to seek an ethical vision within Europe navigating the knowledge of ongoing mass death at the border. This is one explanation for the interest in objects symbolising present-day irregular border crossing among museum curators, artists, designers and activists. Wooden fishing boats, inflatable dinghies and life jackets appear regularly in exhibitions and installations. Disegnata dal frate Giuseppe Mariani, la villa-palazzo di Luigi Naselli, Principe di Aragona, fu edificata nella seconda decade del Settecento. Attraverso una originale indagine archivistica la monografia ricostruisce le fasi della sua edificazione, le trasformazioni, l'importante passaggio di proprietà ai Filangeri di Cutò nel 1803, i rifacimenti intervenuti nelle sale interne tra la metà dell'Ottocento e i primi del Novecento, i rapporti con il fenomeno più ampio dell'architettura delle ville. Investigation of the hyperfine structure of weak atomic Vanadium lines by means of Fourier transform spectroscopy

In continuation of our work on the investigation of the hyperfine structure (HFS) of atomic vanadium, we analyzed weak spectral lines in a Fourier transform spectrum that have not been investigated up to now. The main objective of this work was the determination of the magnetic dipole HFS constant A of the energy level at 15 103.784 cm−1, which was the only energy level with unknown A value up to the energy of 28 000 cm−1. Additionally, other gaps in the data of magnetic dipole HFS could be filled in. Coexpression of heat-evoked and capsaicin-evoked inward currents in acutely dissociated rat dorsal root ganglion neurons.

Noxious heat is able to activate heat-sensitive nociceptors in the skin very rapidly, but little is known about the mechanisms by which heat is transduced. We used the whole-cell patch-clamp technique to study the effects of noxious heat and capsaicin on freshly dissociated rat dorsal root ganglion neurons in vitro. Using temperatures between 41 degrees C and 53 degrees C, 8 of 19 small neurons (phior = 30 microm) exhibited a heat-evoked inward current. All heat-sensitive neurons tested were also capsaicin-sensitive. Moreover, the heat response tended to be enhanced after capsaicin (360 +/- 150 pA versus 125 +/- 45 pA, P0.1, n = 7). ‘In situ’ preparation of nitrous acid solutions by photoreduction in a flow assembly for analysis of pharmaceuticals

The solutions of nitrite ion, or nitrous acid, are frequently used as reagent in different analytical procedures and in pharmaceutical analysis. The low stability of the aqueous solutions of this reagent implies the tedious work of freshly prepared solutions every day and being kept in the refrigerator. In this paper, a photoreactor formed by a low pressure mercury lamp and nesting in a continuous-flow manifold is studied, tested, and proposed for the in situ reduction of nitrate solution into nitrite. The conversion into nitrite is reproducible and it has been successfully applied to determination of different drugs, mostly from the sulphonamide family, in an FIA assembly.

Abstract The gonads of glow worm larvae are enveloped by adipose tissue which represents a specialized fat body. The adipose gonadal envelope, and also to a lesser extent the fat body cells, contain tubular paracrystalline inclusion bodies (PIBs). Cells of other tissues are devoid of such inclusions. The PIBs form in the cisternae of rough ER. In young larvae PIB formation is sparse, but at advanced larval stages PIBs often occur as bundles in stacks of ergastoplasm. Typically, a PIB within a cisterna consists of four to seven parallel tubules. The outer diameter of a tubule is ca 28.8 nm and the width of the tubule lumen ca 12.2 nm. Does cyclic GMP mediate the negative inotropic effect of acetylcholine in the heart?

DURING vagal stimulation the pacemaker activity of the heart is diminished. The reduction in heart rate is due to a release of acetylcholine (ACh) from the parasympathetic nerve terminals that increases the permeability of the myocardial cell membrane for potassium ions (for review see ref. 1). This is accompanied by a shortening of the action potential duration in atrial muscle and a diminished calcium uptake2, which in turn results in a negative inotropic effect. Experimental Study of Vibrations in Face Milling Cutting

The paper consists of a research in designing and experimental analysis using a face milling cutter with round inserts. A general model for the new cutter is proposed taking into consideration multiple aspects regarding monitoring and controling the milling process. A comparison of measured vibrations when cutting with different parameters for two constructions of the milling head is presented. The objective of this vibration comparison is to verify wether the new design behaves in similar way with the classic and proven concept of insert clamping using a central screw.
