Nonlinearities in plant RNA virus fitness

2012

Replication of herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 in the medulla of the adrenal gland after vaginal infection of mice.

1996

After vaginal infections of mice with neuroinvasive strains of herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 (HSV-1, HSV-2) virus replicates in the epithelium of the vagina, in the paravaginal ganglia, in the spinal cord and finally in the brain and in the adrenal glands. However, viral antigens could be demonstrated only in the medulla of the adrenal glands but not in the cortex, as assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC). HSV could not be isolated from liver, spleen, uterus, and ovaries. This contrasts to the intraperitoneal (i.p) route of infection with replication in different visceral organs including the adrenal gland's cortex.

Colonization of adrenal glands and ovaries of mice by variants of HSV 1 and 2

1991

The herpes simplex virus (HSV)-infected mouse model was used to correlate histopathological lesions in adrenal glands and ovaries with the localisation of viral nucleic acids and viral antigens, employing in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. In the adrenals, the lesions were mainly restricted to the zona fasciculata and the zona reticularis, sometimes extending to the medulla. In the ovaries, lesions were detected in follicles and in the stroma. During the course of infection, HSV nucleic acids could be detected earlier than HSV proteins. Next to the center of necrotic foci mainly HSV proteins were detected, whereas peripheral cells were found to contain viral nucleic acids. In s…

Fenêtres sur couples : trois nouvelles de Sean O'Faolain

2003

In several short stories, Sean O'Faolain ponders over the complexity of love relationships and tries to unveil some of the unconscious motivations underlying them. This essay focuses on three of these short stories, namely "There's a Birdie in the Cage", "Discord" and "An Inside Outside Complex", and shows how, in each of them, the fissures or cracks in love relationships are figuratively represented by an isotopy of windows, the various qualities of which are artfully exploited by O'Faolain (the window as partition between contiguous spaces, as transparent filter, as surface or frame). The position of characters with regard to windows (their framing) and their relations to windows (how the…

The Influence of the Lotus Flower Theme on the Perception Perception of Contemporary Urban Architecture

2021

We live in the visual culture times, when images continuously and daily are transferring some information. A visual message is also an indispensable element of architecture, in the semantic layer as an aesthetic value, sometimes fulfilling a narrative function by means of a symbol, which is an international visual code. Most of the symbols, hidden in painting, sculpture, or architecture, are elements of nature. The article discusses examples of architecture whose form is based on a lotus flower. Unification of urban landscapes leads to a decrease in the value of aesthetic impressions; therefore, the unique architecture builds the unique identity of the place.

Hungarian private linguistic landscape in South-West Slovakia

2014

In the field of Linguistic Landscape research little attention has been paid to the situations where a minoritized group gives the regional majority, such as South-‐West Slovakia where Hungarians form the majority. A clear majority of public signs, also in the region with a Hungarian majority, are only in Slovak, especially in the ‘official’, public sphere. In rural communities, signs posted by private citizens can be relatively frequent, too. In the truly non-‐ commercial private sphere, minorities have autonomy in public language choice. I present the local practices and interpretations of the private linguistic landscape in two ‘Hungarian’ villages in South-‐West Slovakia in the light…

A Moldvai Csángómagyar Oktatási Program kutatása és támogatása vizuális módszerekkel

2018

A Moldvai Csángómagyar Oktatási Program kutatása és támogatása egy több éves (2016– 2021), a Finn Akadémia által támogatott projekt (projektszáma, 299133), amelynek anyaga 30 moldvai településen folyatatott, 2017–2019 között végzett terepmunkából áll. A terepmunka szakaszai során számos vizuális és digitális módszertani eljárás is bevezetésre kerül, s az ezek segítségével készített anyagokból nagy terjedelmű, multimodális adatbázis jön létre. Cikkemben néhány, eddig sikeresnek bizonyult módszert mutatok be, különös tekintettel arra, hogy ezek segítségével hogyan válaszolhatók meg a kutatási kérdéseim. A kötet témájához igazodva kutatásomnak a nyelvitájkép-kutatások között elfoglalt helyét i…

Regional Farmers’ Perception and Societal Issues in Vineyards Affected by High Erosion Rates

2021

We explore the current situation in a viticultural region in Eastern Spain from a holistic and multifaceted research approach, which allowed us to understand the biophysical conditions, economic cost, social impact, and perception of the farmers’ community to the use of catch crops. A survey of the perception of the farmers, and an assessment of the biophysical impact of catch crops (CC) and tillage (C = Control plot) on soil organic matter, bulk density, infiltration capacity (single ring infiltrometer), and runoff generation and soil erosion (rainfall simulation experiments) was carried out. Two representative fields as study sites were selected in Les Alcusses valley, within Els Alforins…

Geogenic and atmospheric sources for volatile organic compounds in fumarolic emissions from Mt. Etna and Vulcano Island (Sicily, Italy)

2012

In this paper, fluid source(s) and processes controlling the chemical composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gas discharges from Mt. Etna and Vulcano Island(Sicily, Italy) were investigated. The main composition of the Etnean and Volcano gas emissions is produced by mixing, to various degrees, of magmatic and hydrothermal components. VOCs are dominated by alkanes, alkenes and aromatics, with minor, though significant, concentrations of O-, S- and Cl(F)-substituted compounds. The main mechanism for the production of alkanes is likely related to pyrolysis of organic-matterbearing sediments that interact with the ascending magmatic fluids. Alkanes are then converted to alkene and …

New Techniques for real-time volcanic gas measurements: the UV camera

2012

In this study, I take advantage of a novel technique - the UV camera - to image SO2 emissions from the Italian volcanoes with improved high temporal resolution. Here, this technique has been updated to a new configuration (dual-camera system), which combines higher temporal resolution (0.5-1.2 Hz) and improved accuracy relative to the single-camera setup. The methodology has been extensively tested and improved, whilst developing a user-friendly control software (Vulcamera) and a calibration technique (in tandem DOAS-SO2 quartz cells calibration), which simplify instrument deployment, acquisition and data analysis. A first application was focused on SO2 gas flux measurements at individual fuma…
