A systematic study of the optical properties of mononuclear hybrid organo-inorganic lanthanoid complexes

2020

A series of hybrid organo-inorganic mononuclear lanthanoid complexes, [n-NBu4]3[LnH(PW11O39)(phen)2]·H2O, denoted as LM4-1-Ln (Ln = DyIII, TbIII, EuIII, NdIII, ErIII, HoIII and GdIII), were synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis and were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The optical properties of all complexes have been investigated in the solid state. The temperature-dependent emission spectra of LM4-1-Dy, LM4-1-Tb and LM4-1-Eu complexes show intense lanthanoid emissions in the visible region, while LM4-1-Nd shows near-infrared (NIR) luminescence. The EuIII complex shows typical strong red emissions from the 5D0 → 7F0,1,2,3,4 transitions, with the CIE colour coordinates (0.6…

Identifying lifetime as one of the key parameters responsible for the low brightness of lanthanide-based OLEDs.

2021

OLEDs based on lanthanide complexes have decisive optical advantages but are hampered by low brightness. Despite the efforts to optimize several parameters such as quantum yield and charge carrier mobility, there seems to be another key parameter that hinders their performances. Experimental data are therefore collected for mixed-ligand europium complexes with bathophenanthroline and different classes of anionic ligands and screened to identify the key parameter responsible for this situation, which turns out to be the long lifetime of their excited states. A broad literature search supports this conclusion, showing that lanthanide complexes are inferior to other classes of OLED emitters of…

Modeling the properties of lanthanoid single-ion magnets using an effective point-charge approach

2012

Herein, we present two geometrical models based on an effective point-charge approach to provide a full description of the lowest sublevels in lanthanoid single ion magnets (SIMs). The first one, named as the Radial Effective Charge (REC) model, evaluates the crystal field effect of spherical ligands, e.g. F(-), Cl(-) or Br(-), by placing the effective charge along the Ln-ligand axes. In this case the REC parameters are obtained fitting high-resolution spectroscopic data for lanthanoid halides. The second model, named as the Lone Pair Effective Charge (LPEC) model, has been developed in order to provide a realistic description of systems in which the lone pairs are not pointing directly tow…

Construction of a General Library for the Rational Design of Nanomagnets and Spin Qubits Based on Mononuclear f-Block Complexes. The Polyoxometalate …

2014

This paper belongs to a series of contributions aiming at establishing a general library that helps in the description of the crystal field (CF) effect of any ligand on the splitting of the J ground states of mononuclear f-element complexes. Here, the effective parameters associated with the oxo ligands (effective charges and metal-ligand distances) are extracted from the study of the magnetic properties of the first two families of single-ion magnets based on lanthanoid polyoxometalates (POMs), formulated as [Ln(W5O18)2](9-) and [Ln(β2-SiW11O39)2](13-) (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb). This effective CF approach provides a good description of the lowest-lying magnetic levels and the associate…

Mononuclear lanthanide(III)-oxamate complexes as new photoluminescent field-induced single-molecule magnets: solid-state photophysical and magnetic p…

2020

Implementing additional optical (luminescent) properties into the well-known class of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) is considered as a promising route toward obtaining the next generation of optomagnetic materials for quantum information storage and computing. Herein, we report a joint optical and magneto-structural study for the two novel series of lanthanide(iii) complexes of general formula Bu4N[LnIII(HL)4(dmso)]·nH2O where H2L = N-(4-Xphenyl)oxamic acid with X = Cl and n = 2 [Ln = Eu (1_Cl), Gd (2_Cl), Dy (3_Cl), and Tb (4_Cl)] and X = F and n = 3 [Ln = Eu (1_F), Gd (2_F), Dy (3_F), and Tb (4_F)]. All these compounds are mononuclear species with each lanthanide(iii) cation in a low-sym…

Further synthetic investigation of the general lanthanoid(iii) [Ln(iii)]/copper(ii)/pyridine-2,6-dimethanol/carboxylate reaction system: {CuII5LnIII4…

2021

In addition to previously studied {CuII3Gd6}, {CuII8Gd4}, {CuII15Ln7} and {CuII4Ln8} coordination clusters (Ln = trivalent lanthanide) containing pdm2− or Hpdm− ligands (H2pdm = pyridine-2,6-dimethanol) and ancillary carboxylate groups (RCO2−), the present work reports the synthesis and study of three new members of a fifth family of such complexes. Compounds [Cu5Ln4O2(OMe)4(NO3)4(O2CCH2But)2(pdm)4(MeOH)2] (Ln = Dy, 1; Ln = Tb, 2; Ln = Ho, 3) were prepared from the reaction of Ln(NO3)3·xH2O (x = 5, 6), CuX2·yH2O (X = ClO4, Cl, NO3; y = 6, 2 and 3, respectively), H2pdm, ButCH2CO2H and Et3N (2 : 2.5 : 2 : 1 : 9) in MeCN/MeOH. Rather surprisingly, the copper(II)/yttrium(III) analogue has a sli…

Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic Properties of a Family of Heterometallic Pentanuclear [Co 4 Ln] (Ln = Gd III , Dy III , Tb III , and Ho III ) Asse…

2013

The reaction of 6-formyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)-4-methylphenol (LH2) with appropriate lanthanide salts followed by reaction with Co(OAc)2·4H2O afforded the pentanuclear heterobimetalllic compounds [Co4Ln(L)4(OAc)2(S)4](NO3)(S) [LnIII = GdIII, S = MeOH (1); LnIII = DyIII, S = H2O (2); LnIII = TbIII, S = MeOH (3); LnIII = HoIII, S = MeOH (4)] in good yields. All the compounds are stable in solution as confirmed by ESI-MS studies. These complexes contain a distorted Co4 tetrahedral core, which encapsulates a central lanthanide ion. The CoII and LnIII ions are in an all-oxygen environments. All the CoII ions possess a distorted octahedral geometry, and the LnIII ions are in a distorted square-antipr…

Organometallic early lanthanide clusters: syntheses and X-ray structures of new monocyclopentadienyl complexes.

2004

The reaction of Ln(BH(4))(3)(THF)(3) or LnCl(3)(THF)(3) with 1 equiv of KCp*' ligand (Cp' = C(5)Me(4)n-Pr) afforded the new monocyclopentadienyl complexes Cp*'LnX(2)(THF)(n) (X = BH(4), Ln = Sm, n = 1, 1a, Ln = Nd, n = 2, 1b; X = Cl, Ln = Sm, n = 1, 3a) and [Cp*'LnX(2)](n') (X = BH(4), n' = 6, Ln = Sm, 2a, Ln = Nd, 2b; X = Cl, Ln = Nd, 4b). All these compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and (1)H NMR. Crystals of mixed borohydrido/chloro-bridged [Cp*'(6)Ln(6)(BH(4))(12-x))Cl(x)(THF)(n')] (x = 10, n' = 4, Ln = Sm, 2a', Ln = Nd, 2b'; x = 5, n = 2, Ln = Sm, 2a' ') were also isolated. Compounds 2a, 2b, 2a', 2b', and 2a'' were structurally characterized; they all exhibit a hexameric…

Rational Design of Single-Ion Magnets and Spin Qubits Based on Mononuclear Lanthanoid Complexes

2012

Here we develop a general approach to calculating the energy spectrum and the wave functions of the low-lying magnetic levels of a lanthanoid ion submitted to the crystal field created by the surrounding ligands. This model allows us to propose general criteria for the rational design of new mononuclear lanthanoid complexes behaving as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) or acting as robust spin qubits. Three typical environments exhibited by these metal complexes are considered, namely, (a) square antiprism, (b) triangular dodecahedron, and (c) trigonal prism. The developed model is used to explain the properties of some representative examples showing these geometries. Key questions in this ar…

The hydration enthalpies of Md3+ and Lr3+

1988

Lawrencium (3-min 260Lr) and lighter actinides were produced in the bombardment of a 249Bk target with 18O ions and loaded onto a cation exchange column in 0.05 M α-hydroxyisobutyrate solution at pH=4.85, together with the radioactive lanthanide tracers 166Ho, 171Er and 171Tm. In elutions with 0.12 M α=hydroxyisobutyrate solution (pH=4.85), trivalent Lr was eluted exactly together with the Er tracer and Md was eluted close to Ho. Lr elutes much later than expected based on the known elution positions of the lighter actinides and the expected analogy to the elution positions of the homologous lanthanides. From the measured elution positions, ionic radii were calculated for Lr3+ and Md3+. Sem…
