Enhanced thermoelectric properties of lightly Nb doped SrTiO3 thin films
2021
Novel thermoelectric materials developed for operation at room temperature must have similar or better performance along with being as ecofriendly as those commercially used, e.g., BiTe, in terms of their toxicity and cost. In this work, we present an in-depth study of the thermoelectric properties of epitaxial Nb-doped strontium titanate (SrTiNbO) thin films as a function of (i) doping concentration, (ii) film thickness and (iii) substrate type. The excellent crystal quality was confirmed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The thermoelectric properties were measured by the three-omega method (thermal conductivity) and van der Pauw method (el…

Novel chemical reaction co-precipitation method for the synthesis of apatite-type lanthanum silicate as an electrolyte in SOFC
2017
Abstract Apatite-type lanthanum silicates have promising performance as electrolyte materials for IT-SOFC. A novel co-precipitation method, based on chemical reaction, is employed in the synthesis process. The reaction products: La(OH) 3 and SiO 2 are used as precursors of apatite synthesis process. The precursors are mixed in molecular scale which provide much conducive to formation reaction. The pure apatite phase composition is obtained with quite moderate temperature of 700 °C for 6 h which shows considerable ionic conductivity performance. The conductivity decreases when you increase the calcination temperature in according with XRD measurement. The XRD measurement shows the presence o…
Investigation of La2O3 and/or (Co,Mn)3O4 deposits on Crofer22APU for the SOFC interconnect application
2009
International audience; Chromia forming alloys (stainless steels) are among the best candidates for SOFC interconnects. However, problems of decreasing electronic conductivity during high temperature service and volatility of chromium oxide scales need to be solved. Electronically conductive surface coatings, which also reduce oxide scale growth and chromium volatility, are needed to improve stainless steel interconnects. The goal of this study is to investigate combinations of lanthanum oxide (La2O3) and cobalt manganese oxide ((Co,Mn)3O4) coatings on Crofer22APU stainless steel. Thin film coatings of La2O3 (~200 nm) and Co,Mn (1:1) (~2 mm) were deposited via metal organic chemical vapor d…
Domain wall transformations and hopping in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3nanostructures imaged with high resolution x-ray magnetic microscopy
2014
We investigate the effect of electric current pulse injection on domain walls in La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO(3) (LSMO) half-ring nanostructures by high resolution x-ray magnetic microscopy at room temperature. Due to the easily accessible Curie temperature of LSMO, we can employ reasonable current densities to induce the Joule heating necessary to observe effects such as hopping of the domain walls between different pinning sites and nucleation/annihilation events. Such effects are the dominant features close to the Curie temperature, while spin torque is found to play a small role close to room temperature. We are also able to observe thermally activated domain wall transformations and we find that,…
An improved system for fast, continuous chemical separations (“SISAK 2”) in nuclear spectroscopic studies
1980
Abstract An improved rapid, continuous solvent extraction system (“SISAK 2”) is described. The system is connected to a gas-jet installed at the Mainz reactor. It allows single or multistage chemical separations of liquid phases by means of specially designed centrifuges within ∼1 s per stage. The application of this system to study short-lived nuclides is exemplified for neutron-rich lanthanum and cerium isotopes produced by fission.
A coupled-cluster study of lanthanum trihalide structures
2002
Coupled-cluster calculations were carried at the CCSD(T)-level in order to determine the structures and vibrational spectra of the lanthanum trihalides LaF3 and LaCl3. Two different approaches were employed to describe scalar relativistic effects; the quasi-relativistic Effective Core Potential approach and the all-electron Douglas–Kroll approach. We find LaF3 to be of pyramidal structure and LaCl3 to be planar. The obtained vibrational frequencies accord well with experimental measurements except for the ν2 mode. This disagreement is attributed to the intrinsic uncertainty of harmonic frequencies of this fluxional mode as extracted from spectra which were obtained at high temperature and f…
Polarization Switching in Heterophase Nanostructures: PLZT Relaxor Ceramics
2005
The polarization switching is experimentally investigated in hot-pressed PLZT-x/65/35 ceramics with a lanthanum content from 5 to 12 at. %. The specific features in the temperature dependence of the polarization switching in a heterophase state are interpreted by analyzing the change in the switched charge measured over wide ranges of fields and temperatures. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of depolarization fields induced by interphase boundaries. A model of the evolution of polydomain nanostructures with a change in the temperature and in the response to an external field is considered. It is assumed that the low-temperature dielectric anomaly and the temperature hysteresis are …
Mössbauer Study of Lanthanum–Strontium Ferromanganite Oxides
2004
The La0.88Sr0.2Mn(1−y)Fey0(3±δ, i (LSMF with y = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1) compounds are prospective cathode materials for advanced solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) application operating at 700° C. Usual analysis methods like thermogravimetric analysis or redox titration enable to determine the average oxidation state of both manganese and iron cations. The comparative role of iron and manganese in B-site was evaluated by 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. Spectra revealed that the complete substitution of iron for manganese induces the formation of Fe5+ for the compound with y = 1. However, no tetravalent iron cation was observed in air for the LSMF compounds with y = 0.2, 0.5 and 0.8. This means that o…
Comparative quantum chemistry study of the F-center in lanthanum trifluoride
2020
Abstract In this study we report the results of first principle quantum chemical modeling of electronic structure and spatial configuration of LaF3 crystal containing the F-center. Theoretical predictions of atomic and electronic properties of LaF3 are given by means of density functional theory. From our modeling we predict that the F-center placed at fluorine ion position between the lanthanum planes at tysonite LaF3 is the most energetically stable. In order to interpret the structure of the optical absorption spectrum of X-irradiated LaF3 we performed calculations of excited and transition states of the F-center within the embedded cluster formalism using time dependent density function…
