Recent changes in chironomid communities and hypolimnetic oxygen conditions relate to organic carbon in subarctic ecotonal lakes

2018

A key question in aquatic elemental cycling is related to the influence of bottom water oxygen conditions in regulating the burial and release of carbon under climate warming. In this study, we used head capsules of Chironomidae larvae to assess community and diversity change between the past (estimated as Pre-Industrial Period) and present and to reconstruct changes in hypolimnetic oxygen conditions from 30 subarctic ecotonal lakes (northeastern Lapland) using the top-bottom paleolimnological approach applying surface sediment (topmost 0-2 cm) and reference (4-5 cm) samples. Subsequently, we tested the findings against dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration of the sites. We found tha…

C1,α regularity for the normalized p-Poisson problem

2017

We consider the normalized p -Poisson problem − Δ N p u = f in Ω ⊂ R n . The normalized p -Laplacian Δ N p u := | Du | 2 − p Δ p u is in non-divergence form and arises for example from stochastic games. We prove C 1 ,α loc regularity with nearly optimal α for viscosity solutions of this problem. In the case f ∈ L ∞ ∩ C and p> 1 we use methods both from viscosity and weak theory, whereas in the case f ∈ L q ∩ C , q> max( n, p 2 , 2), and p> 2 we rely on the tools of nonlinear potential theory peerReviewed

Local regularity estimates for general discrete dynamic programming equations

2022

We obtain an analytic proof for asymptotic H\"older estimate and Harnack's inequality for solutions to a discrete dynamic programming equation. The results also generalize to functions satisfying Pucci-type inequalities for discrete extremal operators. Thus the results cover a quite general class of equations.

Comparative Analysis of fundamental motor skills in Finnish children with and without intellectual disability : A replication study

2021

Children with intellectual disability (ID) characteristically have motor problems. The purpose of this study was to compare differences in motor skills between Finnish children with and without ID, to compare the differences between children with ID with and without DS, and to systematically replicate Rintala & Loovis (2013). Twenty-five Finnish children (10 girls, 15 boys; M age = 8.7 yr.; SD 1.2) with ID were tested using the TGMD-3. Children with ID (including six children with DS) were matched according to age and gender with typically developing children in order to identify differences in motor skills. The findings revealed significant variability in the motor skills of children with …

Apoptotic-like Leishmania exploit the host´s autophagy machinery to reduce T-cell-mediated parasite elimination

2015

Apoptosis is a well-defined cellular process in which a cell dies, characterized by cell shrinkage and DNA fragmentation. In parasites like Leishmania, the process of apoptosis-like cell death has been described. Moreover upon infection, the apoptotic-like population is essential for disease development, in part by silencing host phagocytes. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism of how apoptosis in unicellular organisms may support infectivity remains unclear. Therefore we investigated the fate of apoptotic-like Leishmania parasites in human host macrophages. Our data showed--in contrast to viable parasites--that apoptotic-like parasites enter an LC3(+), autophagy-like compartment. The compartm…

Clinical Assessment of the Effects of Low-Level Laser Therapy on Coronally Advanced Flap Procedure in the Management of Isolated Gingival Recession

2022

The aim of this randomized, controlled split-mouth clinical trial was to assess the effect of LLLT on wound healing after modified coronally advanced flap (MCAF) procedure for treatment of isolated recession-type defects. Fifteen patients with isolated bilaterally symmetrical gingival recessions (Miller’s Class I or Class II, or a combination of both) were enrolled in this study. After a modified, coronally advanced flap technique was implemented, a diode laser (810 nm) with a power of 120 mW irradiated the inner surface of the flap and the outer surface of the flap (low-level laser therapy—LLLT) after suturing for 5 min. This was repeated for the following four consecutive days…

Synsedimentary collapse on a carbonate platform margin (lower Barremian, southern Vercors, SE France)

2004

International audience; A large area of synsedimentary collapse covering about 25 km2 has been identified within Lower Barremian carbonate platform strata of the Southern Vercors (Vocontian Basin, SE France). New observations of the prograding/aggrading strata of the Cirque d'Archiane and the Glandasse Plateau reveal the presence of a disturbed zone, showing tilted and imbricated blocks as well as slump features. Measurements and analysis on these synsedimentary distorted strata suggest that they compose a slide which slipped on the Barremian slope. The occurence of two coarse bioclastic grainstone beds on the eastern side of the Archiane Valley, in a distal hemipelagic context, suggests th…
